Mayor: Clinic hearing to be wide-ranging

If Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has his way, a scheduled hearing involving a troubled endoscopy clinic will be about much more than simply revoking the clinic's license to do business in the city of Las Vegas.

"I think the public is entitled to have these people account to them sooner than later," Goodman said Thursday during his weekly news conference. "I didn't see anybody who was able to move the process along quickly enough in order to accomplish that other than the City Council."

  • A hearing on the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada's business license is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 7 in Las Vegas City Hall.

The city suspended the license Feb. 29, shortly after health officials reported that unsafe practices at the clinic were linked to six cases of hepatitis C. Letters went out to 40,000 former patients, urging them to be tested for hepatitis and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Health officials reported that at the Las Vegas clinic, located on Shadow Lane, syringes were regularly reused on patients when administering anesthesia. That raised the possibility of contaminating vials of medicine, which were then reused on other patients.

"Wherever I go, people come up to me and say they have a family member, they themselves, they have a friend, they know somebody who went and got this endoscopic treatment, and they're frightened. They're angry," Goodman said. "Until they get the word back from their blood test that they're OK, they live in mortal fear."

He added that he has instructed the city attorney's office to serve notice to the clinic's owners that they must attend the April 7 hearing. He also wants nurse anesthetists from the clinic to attend, as well as state and local health officials.

"They'll all be under oath, we'll get hopefully to the bottom of what really happened," he said.

Sorry, I should have been more poinient. It does'nt matter to me how Oscar made his $. The point being, he is unaffraid and seems, for the moment, to be the only one taking action and looking out for "us" without fear of political repercussions.

Did'nt think that one needed explanation, but there you go.

syk wrote on March 21, 2008 07:24 PM: amazed , you may be in mortal fear. The chances are, only a few are going to be found to have been infected by the clinic. Even that low number is too many.It is reason for concern, not for mortal fear.If you are really worried, please check with somebody who knows and you trust. I thought you wanted to know the facts.

Jones. Lisa Jones is not only an exceptional leader; she has been my mentor for over 5 years. Lisa is dedicated, working diligently and with much overtime, to her duties in her position as Bureau Chief, and I know because I was right there by her side along the way. Lisa Jones is incredibly knowledgeable and highly intelligent in her field. What I have always admired about her is her toughness and ability to stand her ground, and get the job done. When I first started working at the bureau, I was an extremely young and shy employee, but working with Lisa not only taught me how to focus and absorb knowledge, but how to effectively convey that knowledge to others with confidence. I actually learned more from working with Lisa Jones then in all my years of schooling. To me, Lisa is really an exceptional Bureau Chief and Manager, and if given the appropriate resources and opportunity, I know that she will continue to do an excellent job for the bureau and for our state.

    Sincerely,
    A Public Servant Forever

Do you pronounce that "Syk" as in "sick"? What are you talking about that there is no scientific reason for mortal fear for 40,000 people? No matter what the chances are that a person can be infected - it's very real to the person experiencing it. I know that while I was waiting for my test results to come back I certainly felt "mortal fear". I have to go back for still more blood tests - I'm not in the clear. These are DEADLY diseases or haven't your heard? What's being hyped? It certainly isn't being "hyped" by the major news stations - FOX News, MSNBC, CNN - no one is reporting on the biggest health scare in US history. I think you and "further down a dead-end street" sound like you're one of the doctors or nurse anesthetists involved.

Although the braintrust at the health department doesn't seem to know it, syringes are routinely "reused" on the same patient in every hospital and ambulatory surgery center in the United States. If an ER doctor needs to inject more local anesthetic when he's sewing up your elbow laceration, he's gonna "reuse" the same syringe as he did to inject the first time. If you need four Botox injections on your face, it's pretty likely that the plastic surgeon is gonna "reuse" the same syringe three times after the first injection.

Reusing syringes on the same patient is safe and does NOT spread disease. Reusing syringes from patient to patient definitely DOES spread disease. The health department investigators NEVER observed nurse anesthetists reusing syringes from one patient to the next.

This hepatitis scare is tragic in two repsects. First, an unknown number of innocent people have been infected with blood-borne diseases. Second, the lives and careers of several people have been ruined because of false accusations based on faulty logic, absurd speculation, and unsubstantiated conclusions.

Ultimately, the question that needs to be answered is what motivated the health department to go down a dead-end street? My guess is that it was either gross incompetence or, like a lot of what goes on in Vegas, political pressure from people who have the "juice".

They'll let their lawyers represent them while they escape to a country with no extradition treaty. Meanwhile the number of infected citizens will rise as test results return. IMO, hearings are a poor substitute for yanking their passports and freezing their assets.

Can we elect him governor, Senator and appoint him to the Board of Medical Examiners?

Mary wrote on March 21, 2008 07:10 AM: I hope that the doctors, owners, and nurses involved are subpoened; NOT JUST "INSTRUCTED TO APPEAR"!! It will be interesting to see how many show up on April 7th for this hearing. All of those involved should have their assets frozen and told NOT to leave the state/country....they are all a flight risk!!!!
