Gibbons wants deal to get three off board

Governor pledges no stigma in exit

CARSON CITY -- Gov. Jim Gibbons said Monday he wants to reach an agreement with three members of the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners so they can resign their positions without carrying the stigma that they are in any way responsible for the hepatitis C crisis.

The board members view resigning "as an indictment of their ability when in fact it is a conflict with their business practices with the doctor" at the center of the crisis, Gibbons said in Carson City after addressing by videoconference the Legislative Committee on Health Care, which was meeting in Las Vegas.

  • Gibbons on March 16 announced he wanted Daniel McBride, Javaid Anwar and Sohail Anjum to resign their board positions because of their personal and business relationships with Dr. Dipak Desai, majority owner of the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada.

Officials have linked the Shadow Lane facility to six cases of hepatitis C.

Although the three doctors have agreed not to vote on any medical board matters involving Desai, they have refused Gibbons' call to resign.

McBride said he done nothing wrong and would not resign. He vowed to fight in court any attempt by Gibbons to remove him.

Gibbons said Monday he was willing to state publicly that the three doctors were in no way responsible for the health care crisis, but he still expects them to resign.

"We have been working with them to find a way to accommodate their concerns about voluntarily resigning," Gibbons said. "I am willing to state it has nothing to do with their professionalism and practices as medical professionals."

Unless they resign, Gibbons said, the medical board will be left with six members to vote on matters affecting Desai and his businesses. That means there could be a 3-3 deadlock on some votes, Gibbons said.

Still, Gibbons said previously, the resignations of the three would help "restore public confidence" in health care in Nevada.

"I believe it is the appropriate action," Gibbons said.

I think Board Doc's comment has said it all. He said that it isn't bad to have only 7 out of 40,000. A mathmatician would agree, however true human beings find it disturbing that people who show negligence and an absence of moral fiber could promtote such a view point. We do need to get over it at some point but the guilty need to be imprisoned so the correct message can be sent to the medical community. These doctors charge huge sums of money their work. They should have no problems performing thier trade properly and safely. What does Medicare and other insurance carriers have to say about these doctors charging them for fresh new supplies when they are "double dipping"?

..and remember that he is probably on the medical board too. How many other board members feel the same way? Go get em' Gibbons!

The three board members that have close personal relations with him should resign or step down. Those three have failed the public.

    PS
The only "problem" with the gube's wife testifying... is that she would be also testifying about her own mendacities.

Get over it,, it isn't that bad. Only 7 hep cases out of 40,000.

Joel Watson wrote on March 25, 2008 03:06 PM: I feel that the full board should be dissolved and new criteria be set up and be met before a new board is formed.

I believe that every member of the present board is partially responsible for our present dysfunctional medical service. The main role any board such as this one, is to insure that their fiefdom is protected from unscrupulous behavior and practices. These present members have failed the public and should not even wait to be asked to step down.

As long as any of these board members stay on the board I will have no confidence in our medical community not that I will have much after a whole new board is formed. For this behavior that we are all shocked about to have continued for four or five years in this small medical community we have here in Nevada is not just unacceptable but above all intolerable by any means. The doctors will not police each other even when the obvious is staring them in the face. They should all be questioned and scrutinized on how they conduct their business in their offices.

And when they are found practicing or encouraging unhealthy practices for the sake of a nickel savings a procedures, they need to be severely dealt with under criminal and civil statutes.
