Crane worker killed

Man dies at project site for CityCenter

A construction worker died at the CityCenter project Saturday morning, the second such death at the multibillion dollar Strip construction site this year.

MGM Mirage spokeswoman Yvette Monet said the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the 7:30 a.m. death.

  • Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison told The Associated Press that the man, a crane "oiler," was working on a moving crane when he is believed to have been caught between the counterweight system and the track of the crane.

He was crushed and killed. Allison said the crane did not fall. The man's name was not immediately released.

CityCenter, expected to open in late 2009, is being built by MGM Mirage.

At least six people have died at the project site since construction began in June 2006.

The most recent death was on April 26, when 47-year-old electrician Mark Wescoat fell about 20 feet to his death.

Wescoat's death was ruled accidental by the Clark County coroner's office, but OSHA has yet to release the results of its investigation.

I am sure that there was a serious breakdown in communication for this accident to have happened. I love and miss my dear friend immensely already. My only hope is that his family and friends can all find the strength to deal with this tragedy.

The union brotherhood will never forget your fallen loved one. To the rest of the ignorant people posting comments about things you have no clue about- Just try and think before you speak!! I have been married to an ironworker for 10 yrs and have learned quite a bit about how things work. If you have never been on a jobsite such as this then you have no clue what goes on. I have and know that before a crane is moved there is a horn that sounds to allow everyone around to know and be prepared. The crane operator has now way of turning his head in a 360 degree way. That is why there is a phoneman and a horn. The crane operator and the oiler are neither at falt for the ACCIDENT!! I agree with the fact this job has seen more death then normal but to put blame where it isn't warranted is completely not cool. What these men do is dangerous, but they are schooled and trained to know what to do. There is also the fact of the so called safety people who are supposed to be prepared for such things and obviously they weren't. They can't see everything just as you can't see 360 degree's around you. All I ask is to get facts before pointing blame. To the union brotherhood-I think you rock and admire what you all sacrifice and do. To Genius- to error is human.

Hope some positive comes out of this and the union starts to work on professionalism.

To everyone else who obviously has no heart and have no idea what its like to be an ironworker, you all are ignorent and the world deserves to have to hear your idiotic comments or responces! If you aint got nothin nice to say, dont say nothin at all!!

Genius wrote on June 01, 2008 10:49 AM: I can't believe the stupid comment that the crane operator has no responsibilty to KNOW where people are before making crane movements. The crane operator is ultimately responsible for the safety of his crane operations and that includes knowing where his crew is at all times. If the crane operator doesn't know the positions of his crew, he doesn't move the crane until he finds out! It may take an exta 10 seconds to find out where people are. Time well spent to clear any doubt about the operation of the crane.

Genius wrote on June 01, 2008 10:43 AM: Accidental death? This shows a lack of reasoning! It was no accident, it was a series of human errors and complacency starting at the very top levels of executive "leadership" (errors of omission and comission), ultimately resulting in a lack of situational awareness leading to this death. Accident... tooey. In my opinion, what this death, in a series of deaths at City Center, reveals is a total lack of Executive Leadership regarding safety. Apparently, when the management" morons from MGM were observed out there on Saturday, joking and laughing - you KNOW they have not a clue about leadership, management, or safety -- no concern for this "lowly" working person trying to support his family. This is ultimately is Kerkor Kerkorian's problem. Usually, the buck stops at the top. Kerkorian's executive management makes him look really bad, like a putz! It doesn't matter how much money you have, a putz is a putz! Jail time for MGM executives is in order for all the deaths on this misplanned project. It is the management that allows these needless deaths to continue unabated. No leadership, no control, no oversight, and no concern for safety. Obviously, it appears the "lowly" worker death is just a "cost of doing business" for Kerkorian. It stinks. There are no "accidental" deaths on a civilian project like this. There is a break down of safety management starting at the top-dog's office. I will not patronize City Center due to all the deaths occurring at this site. It seems sacreligious to me to live and play on a site so littered with the souls of those dying on this project. Obviously, the project and site are jinxed. It looks like we'll now have to wait for OSHA to roll over one more time!
