GIBBONS DIVORCE: Texting to Reno woman revealed

Governor sent hundreds of messages in '07

CARSON CITY -- Gov. Jim Gibbons sent more than 850 text messages during a five-week period last year to the cell phone of the Reno woman he has been accused of being involved with, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that it analyzed Gibbons' state cell phone records for March and April of 2007 and found he made dozens of daily calls to Kathy Karrasch, some as late as 2 a.m.

  • The Review-Journal obtained the phone record on Tuesday. The content of the text messages was not released by the governor's office.

The records showed that the governor sent 170 messages to Karrasch's cell phone on April 1, 2007, sometimes sending two within a minute. Many of the calls were made between midnight and 2 a.m. Gibbons then stopped for the night but began making repeated calls again starting at 8:06 a.m.

On March 12, 2007, a Monday, he made six regular calls to Karrasch in less than an hour, starting with a 35-minute call at 10:24 a.m.

That was a work day for state government, and the governor was working on a plan with the Legislature to deal with a $4 billion shortfall for highway construction.

Gibbons filed for divorce May 2 from his wife of 22 years, former Assemblywoman Dawn Gibbons. He cited "incompatiblity" as grounds for divorce.

In a motion filed for the first lady in May, her lawyer Cal Dunlap said the real reason the governor wanted a divorce was he has been involved with another woman. Dunlap called the woman, whom he did not identify, a "marital intruder."

Multiple sources identified the woman as Karrasch.

Gibbons has denied having an affair with Karrasch, the estranged wife of Reno podiatrist C. Craig Karrasch. Gibbons said she has been a platonic friend for more than 15 years.

On its Web site Tuesday, the Gazette-Journal posted two photographs of Kathy Karrasch, taken at a May art event in Sparks.

Dunlap, in his motion, said Las Vegas cocktail waitress Chrissy Mazzeo bears a "striking resemblance" to the woman with whom the governor is involved.

Mazzeo accused Gibbons of trying to sexually assault her after an evening of drinking in October 2006 during his campaign for governor.

Dunlap added that Mazzeo, "like his wife now, was trashed" by the governor and that "the public was again misled."

Las Vegas police investigated Mazzeo's allegations and declined to file criminal charges against Gibbons.

Dawn Gibbons stood by her husband during the Mazzeo incident and once shouted at a reporter because his newspaper had written about the allegations.

Neither Dunlap nor Gibbons' lawyer, Gary Silverman, would respond to questions about Gibbons' calls to Karrasch in early 2007.

The two lawyers agreed Monday to halt further proceedings in the Gibbonses' divorce to allow time for the couple to work out issues in their divorce.

A source said the couple will try to reach a financial settlement and complete the divorce in the coming weeks.

Earlier this year, the Review-Journal obtained Gibbons' phone records for January through March 2008. The records showed only one call by Gibbons to Karrasch's cell phone.

The phone records released Tuesday showed the governor stopped sending text messages to Karrasch's phone after April 9, 2007.

Karrasch refused to accept additional calls from Gibbons after that time because they argued over the number of calls he was making, a source said.

The cell phone records showed that no calls were placed by Gibbons to Karrasch through the remainder of 2007.

oh my god wrote on June 11, 2008 05:03 PM: Sorry! Havent seen anything in terms of greatness in Nevada, just a lot of the same people connected to special interests, corruption, and a state in shambles and getting worse.
Now they want to oppose terms limits against the will of the voters. Its one thing to be Pollyanna about things and another to be realistic. You have the spirit, but you are swimming with the sharks.
I too work about 100 hours a week, wouldnt be proud to call myself affiliated with any party at the present time, and involved in some corruption investigations.

I have posted things on this site disagreeing with the union line of BS about teachers and how under paid and over worked they think they are and have had them post here to defend themselves for hours on end. One teacher posted from 7am until 10pm on school day about how dedicated he was.

    Hmmm....

Nancy wrote on June 11, 2008 12:25 PM: Not sure what being "one of them" means. I'm not a public servant but certainly do work hard in my spare time (with a 60-70 hour a week job) in getting folks who view the world the same way I do (called Democrats)elected. I was a delegate to County and State conventions, in the past month I have knocked doors in CD3 for 3 different candidates, stood in the heat registering voters and GUESS WHAT - at virtually everything I attend I see the same hardworking, dedicated public servants! One of the more interesting things I am seeing is women who are not just good, but great! Not just one or two of them either! And you?????

The public is not misled, we know whats happening, its the courts and media that think that if they tell us this or that happened we will believe you, guess what we don't.
Chrissy had no chance to even be heard like so many others in this country.

Then you might as well blame other voting groups too. The point is 7% of the population is not going to win an election. You can't just isolate mormons. Most of the people who are here just have other agendas.
