UNLV's top salaries reported

Seven UNLV professors and administrators earned more than $200,000 in state salary last year, according to a Review-Journal analysis of payroll data.

Leading the pack at $248,000 was former UNLV President Carol Harter, now executive director of the university's Black Mountain Institute, an international literary center.

  • In addition to her base salary, Harter received $87,000 in supplemental and deferred compensation. She also could earn a bonus of $250,000 if UNLV successfully completes an on-going $500 million capital campaign.

President David Ashley earned $237,000 in base salary last year and $170,000 in supplemental compensation from the UNLV Foundation.

UNLV presidents are employees of the state higher education system.

The next top earners at UNLV last year were School of Dental Medicine Dean Karen West, a new hire in 2007 who earned $218,700 in state money, and Senior Vice President of Finance and Business Gerry Bomotti who got $212,585, a 5 percent raise from the year before.

West's hire was the latest in a series that has brought new deans to the university's colleges of liberal arts, law, business and education.

Notable employees that got big pay hikes last year were Stuart Mann, dean of UNLV's hotel college, whose salary was elevated by 11 percent, and Carolyn Yucha, dean of the nursing school, who got a 12 percent raise.

The median salary of college administrators and faculty nationwide both grew by about 4 percent last year, compared to the year before, according to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.

The newspaper's payroll analysis also showed the university has been more resourceful in finding non-state funding sources to help pay salaries.

The data provided by the university included a breakdown of each employee's salary by state and non-state funding sources, which include medical practices, research grants, and other sources.

The amount of non-state compensation for faculty and administration eclipsed $13 million last year.

That figure was $11 million in 2006.

William, here is the deal. To teach high school in this state, one needs as little as a certificate that can be earned in 8 months or less. Contrast that to the PhD who attended university of 8 or more years.

It is obvious to me that you never went to college, because beyond REMEDIAL courses what is taught in college is not what is taught in high school.

    You idiot!

Daddy says so wrote on May 14, 2009 03:04 PM: I don't see any problems with these salaries. Keep in mind that most professors spend more than 20 years educating themselves prior to taking a job as a professor. Take particular note of the salaries of law professors. Most of these people could make double outside of academia. The last thing I ask each of you criticizers to keep in mind is that you get what you pay for. Lousy salaries lead to lousy teachers... cough, cough... Clark County School District.

James Madison wrote on June 13, 2008 07:44 AM: I notice this article omitted the salaries at UNLV's Foundation and Research Foundation. Why, I wonder, is that? Just too many bloated salaries to list?

Sherry "Taz" Rosenthal wrote on June 12, 2008 11:51 PM: If your son listens as poorly as you write that explains why.

Or maybe it was some (hereditary) problem with processing standard English vocabulary.

Keith wrote on June 12, 2008 10:01 PM: Spaz, I mean, Taz.... I am so sorry you took umbrage with what I said. I apologize. Yes, my son had you in class for one period, and because he could NOT understand a word you spoke, he had to drop your class. You are right about salaries at UNLV, but the salaries at CSN are also quite high. And the next step would be to look at all university and college salaries, wouldn't you agree? Or are you having a hard time understanding English as well as speaking it?

Sherry "Taz" Rosenthal wrote on June 12, 2008 07:16 PM: Keith,

In terms of "kids" (I guess you mean students) I've never had a complaint. Your own posting however (below) is incomprehensible!

This thread is about UNLV, not CSN, your low opinion of me; your dislike of my blog or whatever. You're obviously not interested in UNLV salaries as a serious discussion topic, just in trashing whatever I say because I said it.

Please at least be courteous enough to other readers and posters to either discuss UNLV like the rest of us here or stay off this thread.

    Thanks,

    Taz

Keith wrote on June 12, 2008 05:42 PM: Sherry.... You are tongue-tied again.... The upper-echelon in the University system is too much to bear. As a so-called English prof, you should know better. Where are you in terms of soaking the public trough? BTW - Are the kids still having a problem understanding you????

tim wrote on June 12, 2008 04:51 PM: Not a bad coin to make when you work only 20-25 hours a week as a prof at tops. I feel sorry for the janitor who puts in an honest 40 hours .IT seems to be a train out of control and heading for a collision.Sounds like the new york yankees payroll.

Angry GradStudent wrote on June 12, 2008 04:49 PM: And Rogers has the cohones to blame Jim Gibbons "sexting" for the poor condition of the higher ed budget in this state? The higher ed system is a pathetic form of 'rich peoples' welfare. I hope Gibbons continues to snub Rogers, and Rogers gets replaced by someone who can understand budgets and financial forecasts.

Sherry Rosenthal wrote on June 12, 2008 12:51 PM: If UNLV pays 100 K+ salaries in order to recruit and maintain top FACULTY (not administrators) I consider the expense worthwhile. The only way to build a quality research university is thus. New gyms, student unions, fancy dormitories and other window dressing of the kind featured in NEWSWEEK do not and will not contribute toward this goal. Those sorts of costly but frivolous so-called "capital improvements" and not faculty hiring need to cease at UNLV.

I disagree with anyone who says Las Vegas cannot or should not have a great research university. Why not? A great research university can be anyplace with the right mind set, perseverence, willingness to invest and sacrifice; and long-term ACADEMIC focus (it must be academic!).

Is UNLV hiring too many ADMINISTRATORS and overpaying them? If so this hurts UNLV. No one selects a graduate school because of who is a president, vice-president or dean there. A prospective graduate student WILL seek out a professor and apply to that school. The best do so.

I applaud UNLV's forward-looking efforts to hire the best faculty! It is unfortunate this thinking has not been in place longer! If UNLV stays this course UNLV will inevitably become the great research university it seeks to be. When this happens our community will be better for it.

    Sincerely,

    Sherry "Taz" Rosenthal
    (CSN English professor)
