School layoffs planned

But some of 140 in support positions may fill vacancies

State budget cuts that came out of the special legislative session are forcing the Clark County School District to lay off 140 support personnel, district officials said Tuesday.

In a memo, Superintendent Walt Rulffes said he is "saddened" but "there is a good chance many of these employees can be absorbed into existing vacancies throughout the district."

  • Rulffes said there are 120 openings available: 60 vacancies in student support services, 20 bus driver vacancies and 40 other vacancies in the district at large. He also anticipates additional aides will be needed for new kindergarten programs. Hiring for vacancies will be done by seniority.

The district's need to cut positions came about when the Legislature eliminated grants and specially designated funding sources totaling about $18 million. The layoffs of support personnel should save the district about $6 million, school officials said. Some of the jobs were part-time.

The district also must prepare for 14 percent reductions in state funding, representing a loss of $130 million, for the 2009-2010 school year.

Rulffes anticipated local funding would be down this year because of the weak economy.

"We're taking it day by day," he said. "But we still don't know what all the repercussions will be."

However, you would have to be some kind of nut job to think a reduction in the police force is an option. You will be the first one to complain when the police are not there to rescue you. Shame on you.

Sad, but hopeful for a new job,

Education in Clark County won't change unless the leadership does. Conversation about change can't even take place until you break up the 4 vote. 4 seats are up for election. Good bye Mary Beth- you're not getting my vote.

That is absolutely absurd!! DEB, when the rest of us wants to hear from an a$$hole, WE WILL FART!!

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

Walt Rulffes has never gotten it, does not now get it and will not get it in the future; there are too many administrators drawing 6 figures, doing little positive work toward real education and they need to be cut by 40-50%. The only way he will get it is if he is fired and that can only happen when the composition of the current board of trustees is changed so that we finally have some responsible thinkers on board.

Since his tenure began Rulffes has continually created new positions, promoted old cronies, given them ever larger salaries so that they can draw even bigger retirements based on their total highest salaries for the last three years of employment. This is why and where the state retirement is going to hell; it is not the teachers, nor low level PERS state employees getting rich. It is the school administrators, politicians in city, county, court and other jobs getting the raises and bonuses. So who is killing the retirement system and enriching themselves

School administrators get 30 days paid vacation; teachers do not. Administrators get an additional 2 days per month of vacation time; teachers do not. Administrators get paid overtime, at full salary rate, for supervising activities after school when they are still on the regular school clock; teachers do not. Administrators going on out of state field trips get paid per diem and full salary; teachers do not. So who is killing the retirement system and enriching themselves?
