You couldn't miss beleaguered Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons at the Ultimate Fighting Championship event Saturday.

He was seated on the apron of the octagon, near the judges, and in full view from most camera angles.

  • Later, he was spotted on the dance floor at Tao nightclub at The Venetian, chatting with former Nevada Attorney General George Chanos and "Titanic" actor Billy Zane.

An old saying comes to mind: When you're being run out of town, act like you're leading a parade.

You'd never know this was a governor with abysmal approval ratings, a messy divorce, one of the state's worst budget crises and a never-ending string of negative headlines.

Gibbons' high-profile seat at the UFC event at Mandalay Bay and the appearance at Tao suggest he's living in a "Happy-Days-Are-Here-Again" world.

He was spotted snapping photos of celebrities at the UFC fight and in a private sky box at Tao with a couple who appeared to be in their mid-30s.

    SARAH CAMPAIGN UNDER WAY

Sarah Larson's first billboard as the face of Christian Audigier's clothing line was unveiled over the weekend on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood.

Larson's status with Audigier has been in question since she did not appear at the opening Friday of Christian Audigier the Nightclub at Treasure Island.

Kenya Knight of Nous Model Management in Los Angeles said Larson "had family in town" and had a commitment in San Diego, and was unable to attend the opening.

    CHANNEL 13 SHAKEUP

KTNV-TV, Channel 13, morning anchors Rikki Cheese and Ron Futrell were informed this week that they are being moved to reporting jobs.

They were teamed up about five years ago with weatherman Mark Pfister.

Casey Smith, former morning anchor at KLAS-TV, Channel 8, has moved to the morning anchor desk with Tiffany Sargent. Evening anchor Steve Wolford will take on the additional duties of the 4 p.m. newscast.

The morning team of Cheese, Futrell and Pfister reached No. 1 in the 6 a.m. time slot about two years ago. Futrell, the station's sports director for 20 years before the switch to news, confirmed that he is out as anchor but declined to comment on rumblings that his contract won't be renewed in five months.

Futrell said he has no plans to leave Las Vegas. "My family is here, my life is here, so I'm staying here in some capacity." He added that Cheese "has been an absolute joy to work with."

JR Bivenjour wrote on August 24, 2008 04:34 PM: this sounds like a perfect ABC out. Knowing Ron has a child of need. ABC had to be concerned about the expense of health care. So as they were attempting to bring costs down, and elimitating retirement expenses . This was a perfect situation to do that. A 24 year employee, making a high income.with a child who needs medical help daily. This is ABC's chance to save some money. Just goes to show, its the buck. and ABC found a way to make it look like Ron is a criminal. thats why his son is Ill. It took them 24 years to figure this out. How many drinks did he have? I heard he never drank alchohol. Good Job ABC !! You are the penant of America ! you are the best and the king of taking life out of the soul!!
100% American life suckers determined, to destroy handicapped children for a few bucks!!! Who cares ! in a few months no body will even remember Rons 24 years, his child , his top gun reporting. All they will know is he had an accident coming home , hit his head and tried to do his best. thanks to people who wish they had his talent, and live a life of lust and misery. ABC jumps on it and destroys him and his Family.
Thats the pride and guts ABC is about!!! Awesome stuff.. I hope your children are proud of you ABC!!! you took the cake on this one!! excuse me while I puke. total evil!!!

Dave G. wrote on July 18, 2008 06:51 AM: I will miss Ron especially. Since they canned Mark, the morning show has been tough to watch. The current weather dork is so annoying that we would turn the channel when he came on. But Ron has a great dry sense of humor, and was a good reason to turn in. I will now have to go watch another channel. Good luck Ron, Rikki, and Mark (wherever you are!)

Gail wrote on July 11, 2008 09:00 PM: I AM IN SHOCK!!Futrell and Cheese "reached number one 2 years ago" and they've decided to DUMP THEM?? WHY?? What kind of a lame person made this decision??? Someone needs to have their "management" head examined!! I cannot believe they are letting them go. Ron has been a television icon for the past 25 years and this is the way they treat him! This is a slap in the face of an "television icon" like Ron Futrell. The public loves Ron Futrell and his ability to not only do what he does extremely well, but his special gift of being able to relate to the public like he does. Oh, Ron Futrell will do alright for himself. He's very well-known for his great years as a sports caster and has a phenomenal following in this city. He is THE BEST as what he does and you will never find anyone that will be able to fill his shoes, but go ahead and try. It will at least be "entertaining" to watch you struggle as you try! You know what they say about "karma!"

Brent Denkers wrote on July 11, 2008 10:13 AM: Some thing smells rotten in Denmark? Why would you remove your #1 news anchors on the morning news broadcast and bust them down to beat reporters for the same station? Ron Futrell has been a staple in the Las Vegas news for going on 3 decades and has done an excellent job for KTNV-TV,Channel 13 News, and this is his reward? Sounds to me like politics are involved here; maybe a little "I'm the boss and I say so?" I hope that is not the case because not only would that be a tremendous loss to the local news establishment but to the people of Las Vegas who have groan to love and appreciate his comentary and personality. This is one listener and I'm sure not the only one who feels that management is making a huge mistake hear and will reconsider their position and leave their egos at home! Signed, a concerned listener

Any channel but 13 wrote on July 10, 2008 05:56 PM: The morning news with Rikki, Ron and Mark was a joy to watch. They made you feel that they enjoyed each others company and watching them was like a breath of fresh air. They were genuine. I haven't watched the morning news on channel 13 since they got rid of Mark. Now I won't watch them at 11am or in the evening. The old saying "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" applies here. ABC had a winning team and did great harm to their product when they got rid of Mark. Now, they have further destroyed the quality of their programming by getting rid of Ron and Rikki. These fine anchors have been part of our community for decades and are being tossed aside. For what? Newer, younger, more pricey replacements (like Nina Raditich) can't replace them in our hearts or on our TV.

When the powers that be at KTNV scratch their heads and ponder what happened to their audience numbers --- they need not look beyond the poor choices that continue to disregard their faithful viewers.

joe wrote on July 10, 2008 12:57 PM: Rikki and Ron were let go because of their looks, period. Rikki's head is so big and fat that it's hard to see Ron's funny ears and huge eyebags sometimes. Cold hard fact: T.V. news is different than paper or internet news because looks are a huge factor with the viewers, whether the viewrs realize it or not. Take a look at FOX 5 in the morning....they went from the gorgeous Cher Calvin, who left for an L.A. job a couple years ago, and replaced her with 500 pound Monica Jackson and their ratings plummeted like a 500 pound rock dropped from 35,000 feet (or maybe like Monica if dropped 35,000 feet). Sad as it may be, that's the way life is regardless of a reporter's talents. Just look at Doug Elfman, Norm, or Erin Neff. Regardless of their talents they could no way make it on t.v.

Mama Bear wrote on July 10, 2008 12:14 PM: Rikki should have left town years ago after she traumatized all of the staff at Channel 3. The standards for white anchors/reporters never were applied to her for fear of discrimination lawsuits.

Here again, gray matter is the only thing that matters, and has nothing to do with the color of skin. It'll be interesting to see if she can really cut it as a real reporter and compete for ratings like the rest of them have to.

Judy wrote on July 10, 2008 11:43 AM: What's going on with Channel 13? First they let Mark Pfister go, now Ron and Rikki!!! How RUDE!!!!
