Reno family of 14 faces foreclosure

Couple with adopted children fell behind on mortgage payments

RENO -- The mortgage meltdown has claimed 14 more victims: a Reno-area couple and their 12 adopted children.

Dave and Kathy Bain of Spanish Springs are facing foreclosure on their 3,400-square-foot home after falling behind on payments.

  • "Here I am with 12 kids at home that I need a home for ... I need this size of house," Kathy Bain told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "It's hard for me to ask for help, but I need some guidance on where to go from here."

The Bains moved into the house in January 2007, six months before they adopted nine of the children, including eight siblings.

The couple, who earlier adopted three children, weren't able to rent out their previous, smaller home until last September.

Also last year, Kathy Bain switched to part-time work, then stopped working altogether to take care of the 12 children, ages 3 to 16.

Dave Bain does part-time training for county foster parents.

With their old house rented, she said they now are able to make payments on the new house.

However, their lender, GreenPoint Mortgage, is foreclosing because they're behind $20,000 in payments, she said.

In March, the Bains were notified the foreclosure process was being started. They applied for hardship assistance, but were denied last month. The sale date has been scheduled for July 30.

Tatiana Stead, spokeswoman for GreenPoint Mortgage, said she could not comment because of privacy concerns.

"We understand that from time to time hardships may occur ... and we work with those customers on a case-by-case basis," Stead said.

Kathy Bain said the family could move back into their previous home, but the space is inadequate for a family of 14.

She said some of her children suffered emotional trauma in the past, and the last year has been very difficult on the family.

Before moving in with the Bains, the eight siblings had spent five months in a local shelter for abused and neglected children.

It was the most siblings given to Washoe County's custody that social workers could recall.

I suggest you sit down and watch " It's a Wonderful Life" and remember that this is a country of real people with real faces. These people want to work with you and if you forclose you will probably have to sit on an empty property for months. The people next door to us in Santa Clarita got foreclosed on owing 850 K and the house has been sitting empty for 5 months. The bank has now lowered the price again to 549 K. I'm sorry to say this , but I hope the bad publicity really costs your business,

NO MATTER WHAT YOU MAY THINK OF THE BAIN FAMILY, THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING 97% OF THE PEOPLE WOULD NOT CONSIDER DOING. TO HELP THESE CHILDREN, HAVE A FAMILY LIFE IS FAR BETTER THAN LEAVING THEM TO POTENTIALLY, LIVES OF CRIME OR OTHER MISFORTUNES AND EVILS. PEOPLE SHOULD CONSIDER HELPING, RATHER THAN COMPLAINING. I SUGGEST SOMEONE POST THEIR E-MAIL ADDRESS (OR AT LEAST SEND TO ME), SO WE THAT CARE, CAN CONTACT THEM AND SEND THEM AN ENVELOPE WITH $5.00 IN IT, TIMES, MANY, MANY PEOPLE. THIS, I AM SURE WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL, SAVE THEIR HOME, KEEP THIS LARGE FAMILY UNIT TOGETHER AND IMPROVE THE --FUTURE-- FOR THEM AND THE CHILDREN. I COMMEND THEIR HEARTS OF GOLD, NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK THEIR MOTIVE IS.

these children and never should have been awarded custody of so many. My husband and I both work full time and have a hard time with two children and a 2000 square foot house. Someone needs to wake these people up. Many people I know are working 2 and 3 jobs to make it and this guy "Dave" has only a part time job? Not gonna make it on that. Why is the newspaper printing this stuff? They obviously need to get jobs to make the mortgage payments!!! Problem Solved...

We did not have cable, a computer, internet...People now want everything, they don't know what it is like to live with the basics. Of course, both of my parents worked full time, and my dad had two jobs for several years...which this family should have working parents, older kids take care of younger kids.
