Witness account differs from police

Woman says man's arms bound when shot

Roxanne Lewis still has questions about why Las Vegas police shot and killed a man on her doorstep late Sunday.

Police said two officers scuffled on the ground with the man, who fired a gun once while reaching for an officer's gun. Another officer then shot the man, who later was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

  • Lewis, however, says police shot a man whose arms were bound.

Lewis, who lives in the Spring Point apartments near Pecos Road and Las Vegas Boulevard, was asleep on the couch when she heard a shot at her doorstep.

When she opened the door, she found a police officer on top of the man, whose arms were bound, she said.

Police ordered Lewis to close the door, but she continued to watch events unfold from a bedroom window.

"The way they had him, he couldn't move," she said. "He never said anything or moved. That's why I don't know why they shot."

She said she then saw the officer fire two shots at the man. Although she couldn't see his face, Lewis said she could tell he was still breathing when paramedics arrived.

"They shot that baby in the head," she said, re-enacting where the second officer stood during the scuffle.

Two Las Vegas police officers were patrolling the area near Pecos Road and Las Vegas Boulevard North about midnight when they tried to stop three men on foot.

Police said one of the men kept walking while moving his hand toward his waistband and pulling out a handgun. The officers brought the man to the ground and struggled with him to force him to release the gun.

Police said the man fired his gun once and tried to grab an officer's gun with his free hand. Identities of the gunman and the officer who fired the fatal shot were not released.

Police said the officers were in the area for routine gang enforcement but did not reveal why the men were under suspicion.

Lewis said she didn't know the man but knew he had been in town for two weeks from California. She said she saw him earlier in the day leaning against a car talking on his cell phone.

"Everybody here is upset. He didn't have to die," she said.

Waldo wrote on August 12, 2008 02:22 AM: Are you guys freaking serious congratulating the officers for shooting someone at point blank range in the head execution style? Since when in the land of the free did we sentence people to death with no trial, no lawyer? Believe me, I'm no fan of welfare, whether its illegal immigration, people sucking off of government programs or corporate welfare. bureaucracy, government waste & red tape, and consider myself a small government libertarian, even though I'm from Massachusetts (the 4th highest taxed state in the country). We gotta have standards here. Isn't this sort of oppressive government tyranny is what the founders sought to escape? We didn't get the whole story however, since there seems to be conflicting views. Did the police act in immediate self defense? It would be one thing if they were being attacked, and needed to defend themselves, but from the view of the article, it seems like this poor guy was shot by the police for little reason. Oh, he was a scumbag drug dealing lowlife who smoked weed in front of my house. The punishment for that crime is being shot in the face by the police with no trial. Thats America: land of the free, home of the brave, right? If you sincerely believe this, I urge you to at least pressure your congressman and state legislatures to write legislation allowing the police to permit this sort of nonsence. Perhaps we can call it "The New Freedoms Agenda of 2008". Call your senators now!!!

And like I said he is not related to me. and I never lived in the ghetto. I know you would like to believe that and everyone that carry a gun is not bad. and yes I am saved and will remain saved because I do know we all have to leave here and my God dont make mistakes so just know that your comments dont hurt, you really need to know the facts of what really happen I seen what the police did I stood in the window and watch the police kill him in cold blood.I seen how the police was on top of him and he could not move I seen how they shot him in the right side of his head yes I seen when the blood started running out left side of his head, so what ever you have against me does not have anything to do with his family. Just be mindful about what you say because God does not have a respect of person.

How could you NOT expect to be shot? Lady, get a clue. The "baby" would not have died had he acted like a civilized person. Act like an animal and that's what happens. Lady, don't blame the police. Blame yourself for condoning that sort of behavior from the "baby". I don't know of any babies who carry guns.

Juliette (your own niece) stood in front of a camera and said it was her cousin that was shot. How can you say you didn't know him. Now why would her cousin be running to your mothers front door and you didn't know him. Please Roxanne tell the truth. Juliette was at the house that night. Let's see, she knows "the baby" but you don't. Was he the one outside that night smoking weed with everyone else from your family "that doesn't know him" all of you are low life ghetto scum and I am pleased with the results. Now you can show the other girlfriend the government assistance handbook so she can get a free ride from the government. Or better yet give her a couple of your kids or your sisters kids you get assistance for.
Why are you living at your mothers house anyway. Section 8 shut you down?Have you called the Texas attorney yet?
And you have the nerve to call yourself a christian.

These criminals make their choices, and the Police react to it in a split second. Im glad no Officers or citizens were injured, and Metro should be praised for OBVIOUSLY keeping our communities safer.

SL, I bet when you heard the news of an officer involved shooting...you couldn't wait for this article to come out. I don't think any scenario would've made the shoot justified in your pathetic eyes. As always good job LVMPD for doing a thankless job and keeping the streets as safe as possible.
