McCain plans trip to LV to address vets at convention

Republican presidential candidate John McCain will be back in Las Vegas this weekend to speak to a veterans' group.

McCain is slated to speak Saturday afternoon to the annual convention of the Disabled American Veterans at Bally's, according to Bill Baumann, the convention chairman.

  • The speech will be open to group members attending the convention but not to the general public, Baumann said. The campaign declined to say Monday whether McCain would be having other events in the area in conjunction with the visit.

McCain visited Nevada just last week, having a fundraiser and town hall in Northern Nevada. His Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, hasn't been to the state since late June.

As the presidential campaign heats up in Nevada, a top swing state, Obama's former rival for the Democratic nomination is headed to Las Vegas as well.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, who beat Obama in Nevada's Jan. 19 caucuses but eventually abandoned her campaign, will campaign for Obama here on Friday, the campaign confirmed Monday. Further details were not available.

Last time it happened at a town hall meeting, he deflected and never answered the question. It would be interesting to hear if the straight-talk express is still running on its tracks.
