Reid starts trip, visits Kyrgyzstan

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid disclosed Tuesday that he was in Kyrgyzstan, on a Senate-organized trip to central Asia and Europe focused on terrorism and climate change.

The Nevada Democrat and four other senators met Tuesday with President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, their first public event for the group, which departed Sunday from Washington.

Reid said in a statement the trip is focusing on "progress on terrorism, global climate change, development and democracy."

"While many Americans may have never heard of Kyrgyzstan, as an important developing democracy in Central Asia, ensuring its success is vital, especially given its proximity to Afghanistan and the role this country plays in our fight against terror."

Reid spokesman Blair Hinderliter said that the senators would be gone for eight days and that Kazakhstan and Germany are on the schedule.

Our own Admiral William J. Fallon said this?!

Reid is going someplace that is important to the protection of oil supplies (it's ALL about the oil), and the neo-cons on this site are knocking him? Wierd!

How will we protect our oil interests in the Central Asian community and have the military bases to do so (and be right at the North end of Iran), if we don't send over some big shots every onece in a while to make sure our military base stays open? Sounds like a trip about communism, oil protection and forward US power placement and national security!

I don't see anyone bad mouthing Republican Johnny Isakson of Georgia or the senators from three other states on this trip. Wait a minute never mind. I forget you Reid bashers haven't learned to spell or pronounce any other senators names. At least someone is out there trying to undo the damage created by Bush over the last 8 years.
