Titus trails Porter in fundraising

State Sen. Dina Titus, the Democrat hoping to unseat Rep. Jon Porter in the 3rd Congressional District, kept up an aggressive fundraising pace last month but still has less than half of Porter's campaign war chest, according to campaign finance disclosures filed last week with the Federal Election Commission.

Titus took in $87,000 from July 1 to July 23, according to the report covering that period, while Porter took in $55,000.

  • Since she entered the race in April, Titus has raised $711,000, according to her most recent FEC disclosures. Porter, a three-term incumbent, has raised more than $2 million over the course of the campaign but less than Titus, $526,000, since March, the start of the first financial reporting period to which Titus was subject.

As of July 23, Porter had $1.2 million in cash on hand to Titus' $593,000.

Democrats touted Titus' rapid fundraising, saying the numbers "prove that the momentum is with Titus."

A Porter spokesman retorted that Titus had "failed to keep pace" with Porter's Democratic challengers of years past and noted that "the congressman holds a firm fundraising advantage."

The Porter-Titus race for the House of Representatives seat that includes mainly suburban parts of Clark County is considered one of the most competitive in the country. The race for another Republican-held congressional seat, pitting Democrat Jill Derby against Rep. Dean Heller in Northern Nevada, is thought to be a longer shot for Democrats.

The latest fundraising reports from that race show Heller continuing to hold a massive cash lead over Derby.

Heller raised $34,000 in the July 1-23 period, giving him total contributions of $1.2 million. He had about $1 million in cash on hand as of July 23.

Derby reported raising $26,000 in the July period and $465,273 in the total campaign. She reported about $314,000 in cash on hand on July 23.

Heller, Porter and Titus face primary contests Tuesday against little-known opponents to continue on to the general election.

You have the right and power to define ONLY yourself sir!

If you're going to try to put words in other people's mouths and define them - then YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

Dear "sue" you're right if you're referring to Northern Nevada and the Rurals, but the other 72% of the population in Souther Nevada is far more educated, experienced about the world at-large, and far, far more diverse than you are able to even imagine!

You two, have a nice day - and evening!

bruce wrote on August 07, 2008 08:38 PM: Johnathan L Abbinett!Being a retired miitary person I respect that. You are the first retired military person who was a liberal I'm sure you won't be the last.I'M a consevitive and dam proud of it.Why are liberals so reluctant to say they are liberal.Sir liars are liars and liberals are liberals and you can't be a liberal and a conservitve at the same time You really sound like a strong liberal and that being the case all republicans are liars

Johnathan L. Abbinett wrote on August 07, 2008 05:20 PM: Dear "Betty" and "sue" - if you were referring to me - I am a retired professional military person and very conservative when it comes to our Constitutional rights, environment, education and our children. On most matters I'm a moderate and only liberal on personal freedoms. Which makes me a typically very independent Nevada and American!

This is Vegas ladies! A spade is a spade, a heart is a heart, a club is a club, and a diamond is a diamond!

Liars are liars - and I've caught Porter lying to veterans and military families more times than I can keep count - and that make him stupid!

    Facts are FACTS!

sue wrote on August 07, 2008 05:14 PM: Jon Poter will a representive of Nevada for a long long time,or as long as he wants

BETTY wrote on August 07, 2008 05:06 PM: On thing about a socialist or liberal,if you don't agree with them you are either a lier or stupid end of debate.

Johnathan L. Abbinett wrote on August 07, 2008 04:35 PM: Either "bill" and "bruce" are wealthy Republicans - or you two are just idiots!

Porter has been nothing short of a total political puppet and Bush bag-boy! Porter only truly cares about his wealthy donors!

Porter has voted AGAINST the needs of our military, military families and our veterans - especially AGAINST our Disabled Veterans time and time, and time again! Just check his voting record and how the facts show Porter has been in lock-step with Bush all along!

Now that Porter has to run for office again, now, he's pandering to the people and playing them for patsies by softening his image and trying to come off with his "aw shucks - I'm just a regular guy" sham - Porter is an empty suit representing Washington in Nevada instead of representing Nevadans in Washington!

Wake up people and do a little factual research so you don't get duped again by this lying, cheating, thieving, professional politician getting rich at your expense!

Dina Titus comes from academia and is a widely loved educator and is a greatly respected citizen, professor and public servant who has proven her crendentials over her entire life-time!

If you're really tired of the same old politics - then make sure and vote for Dina! If you really want to help then go to her website, call Dina's office and offer to volunteer to work out of your home, in your own neighborhood, in your precinct and help educate your neighbors, friends and families about why it is important to get out the vote for DINA!

bruce wrote on August 07, 2008 01:38 PM: Jon Porter has become a true conservitve.Thats what the people want.lower taxes, drill for oil, secure the border. All the thing most people in NV want. The demacrats in Washington have been in control for two years the economy has went from good to bad,gas prices have went sky high the housing market went to the dogs.Do we want socialism in NV I don't think so. With Senator Reids approval rating at 12% his endorse would not be good for Titus but good for Porter. If you think voting for Gibbons was a mistake, what woud call voting for Reid was a catastrophe Lets not make the same mistake with Titus that we made with Reid.

VegasTeaRoom wrote on August 07, 2008 10:25 AM: Well, you add all of Dina's collections with the just under 2 million $ ad reserve the DNC made and I think that Mr. Porter is a little behind.

But it is good to see him serving Summer Detention in DC.
