Poll says picking Romney may help McCain in Nevada

Former presidential rival remains influential

If Republican presidential candidate John McCain picks Mitt Romney as his running mate, it could give him a boost in Nevada, according to a new Review-Journal poll.

The number of Nevada likely voters who said Romney's presence on the ballot would make them more likely to vote for McCain was double the number who said they'd be less likely to vote for a McCain-Romney ticket, 26 percent to 13 percent.

  • Most, however -- 59 percent -- said it would have no effect on their vote.

The telephone poll of 400 Nevada voters was conducted Aug. 13-15 by Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc.

The result confirms what many Nevada political watchers have suspected. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, overwhelmingly won Nevada's Jan. 19 Republican caucuses, running away with 51 percent of the vote.

Renegade Texas Rep. Ron Paul came in second, while McCain was third with 13 percent of the vote.

Romney was the only GOP candidate who built a significant campaign organization in Nevada for the caucuses, which were overshadowed by a same-day South Carolina primary.

Exit polls found that Mormons made up about 25 percent of Nevada Republican caucus-goers, and more than 90 percent of them supported Romney.

In the poll, two-thirds of LDS voters said they'd be more likely to vote for McCain with Romney by his side. None said they would be less likely, and 33 percent said Romney wouldn't affect their choice.

Mason-Dixon Managing Partner Brad Coker estimated the Mormon vote at about 9 percent in Nevada and said in a state expected to be close on Nov. 4, Romney could put McCain over the top.

"It certainly looks like having him on the ticket would help a little bit in Nevada," Coker said, adding that turnout among LDS voters might be higher for a Romney ticket.

"In a state that in the end is probably a one- or two-point state, those extra votes could be beneficial," he said. "Everybody talks about Romney helping McCain in Michigan and shoring him up on the economy. But Nevada might be the battleground state where Romney would really be a plus."

I think Romney would be McCain's best choice as VP from those he's considering. Romney has more CEO experience than most and he did help straighten out the SLC Olympics when it appeared to be going down in flames. Romney, however, has changed his mind on several issues and also said he wouldn't use the Olympics to further his political career when he agreed to take the helm, but what politician doesn't change their mind and take full advantage when they can these days? The only person better than Romney I think would be Sidney Rigdon (a little Mormon history humor for those of you who read Mormon history!).

My first post was in response to "Mike Roderick" (are you two one in the same?) who wrote he doesn't vote for Mormons just because he's Mormon and implied that most other Mormons don't either. While I applaud "Mike Roderick / Mike R" for not blindly voting for someone simply because they share the same faith, I was pointing out that the heavily populated Mormon states voted for Romney, which is not a simple coincidence. The vast majority of my Mormon friends voted for Romney because he was Mormon and they had no idea what his political platform consisted of.

You know my views on Mormonism "Mike R", despite that, I think Romney is the best choice for McCain's VP because I'm an independant thinker like you. One problem Romney would face is the barrage of questions regarding Mormonisim from the media, which he would be put on the hot seat to answer truthfully.

Ted wrote on August 24, 2008 07:50 PM: Despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the primaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.

This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..

And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely positioned and able to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at palinforvp.blogspot.com

    Team McCain, well done!!!

politically speaking! If you knew as much as you think you know you would know that !
Well, Romney cleaned up the mess in the olympics...bottom line! What major national mess have you cleaned up?
Everyone is to be judged as an Individual..or is that to hard to figure out?
Romney was among 85% liberals in Mass.
I guess that is too hard to figure out
    for the critics...duh!
    Primaries: real close examination
shows that if the primaries were not
winner take all in some states...Romney would have been only about 12 delagates behing McCain when he dropped out ! There seems to be a
lot of dont confuse me with the facts
    attitudes among critics!

Lets hear who the great joe would put up as v.p.. If religion were put aside, who would the better choice be?
If the thought is that Romeny getting elected would benefit the Mormon church, I'm sure there would be some benefits, but my oppinion is that there would be more backlash and blame placed on the church for any decisions made that were not popular. Besides, if Romney were vice president think about how much more you would have to criticize. It could be a win win for you.

joe wrote on August 24, 2008 04:50 PM: "Mike Roderick" can you explain why Romney won 89% of the vote in Utah this past spring but in lost the state he was former Governor of (Massachusetts)? Can you also explain why 3 of the only 4 states he won in are Utah, Idaho, and Nevada (the states with the highest Mormon populations per capita in the country)? McCain will win the presidency regardless of who he picks as his VP for one simple reason: Obama didn't pick Clinton to run as his VP. Democrats were nearly split 50-50 between Clinton and Obama, and many Clinton supporters vowed to vote for McCain if Clinton wasn't picked to be VP. Biden, though very experienced, lost badly in the Iowa caucuses. Very inexperienced Obama won the Democratic nod, proving experience means little in this election.

Donald L Bradshaw Jr. wrote on August 24, 2008 04:45 PM: What is the real CRIME in this Country, is that ROMNEY is the best possible choice in the United States to be the next President. He is the only Person even in Ballpark That has the know-how in the REAL WORLD of making a Living and understanding what is necessary for this Country to turn around and get on the Right TRACK. (His Record Of Life out there stands on its own). That being being said, Because of his affiliation with LDS Church, if McCain asks him to be the VP, I know, and I'm afraid that The Democrats will win the Presidency. It makes me ill within my being, but the country will not accept a Practicing LDS Member at this time. Whether that is good or bad, I know it is Bad. But what are you going to do. Talk about Things being stacked against you. This is best example I can think of in this country at present of TRUE RACISIM. Anyway, I will say I am not a LDS (Mormon) member, but I have lived and worked around LDS Members my whole life. There is not a more Family oriented Religion (if you want to call it that)in this county. Please Mr. Romney, for the sake of our county do not accept the VP Bid if you get it. Make this a Choice that will "MAYBE" help us beat the Democrats for the White House IN 2008. Thank you for Listening.

mccain was not my choice for the GOP but if he picks romney, then I will vote for mccain

mccain should also consider rick santorum, tom tancredo, bobby jindhal, matt blunt, mark sanford, bob riley, or steve king

if mccain wants to lose the election, he can do that by picking tom ridge, joe lieberman, or mike huckaphony
