Republican group 'deeply troubled' by Nevada GOP

Panel rejects appeals in Paul delegates case

A key Republican committee says it is troubled by the "ineptness" of the Nevada GOP and called the state party's attempt to elect delegates to next week's national convention "flawed, inadequate and unacceptable."

A ruling from the Republican National Committee panel said the state party violated rules when it appointed, rather than elected, its group of 34 delegates and 31 alternates, according to the report obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday.

  • The RNC Committee on Contests was asked to review the delegates by a group of Ron Paul supporters who argued they were shut out of the delegate selection process. The Paul backers elected a separate delegation to the convention in St. Paul, Minn., which also was rejected by the RNC panel.

The committee recommended a compromise list of delegates, which needs approval of the RNC credentials committee. The compromise list included at least four backers of Paul, a former presidential candidate who won a large following in Nevada and inched out McCain for second place in Nevada's January caucuses.

State and national party officials continued to haggle over that list Thursday, as delegates from the swing state remained uncertain whether they should be packing their bags.

In a rejection of appeals from both groups issued Wednesday, the Committee on Contests wrote it was "deeply troubled by the ineptness of the state party" and "rejects any process to select delegates and alternate delegates that restricts party grass-roots activists from participating in that process, as appears to be the case here."

Zachary Moyle, the state party's executive director, did not immediately respond to a call for comment.

Wayne Terhune, a leading Ron Paul supporter, said the committee continued to "disenfranchise every voter in Nevada."

"It's tyranny. They're not a party of laws and rules," Terhune said by phone from St. Paul, where he plans to attend an alternate convention organized by Paul's Campaign for Liberty organization.

Nevada's dueling delegation dispute began when Paul supporters were poised to win delegates at a state party convention in Reno in April. The party abruptly shut down the convention and later attempts to reconvene failed because it could not get enough Republicans to attend.

Meanwhile, the Paul supporters held a rogue convention in June and named their own delegation.

The RNC committee ruled that the June convention was unauthorized. "Only a state party has the authority to convene a state convention," the committee wrote.

Thanks for your opinion, Mr. Nusbaum. Once again, you're dead wrong.

You say, "I think that attempting to offer the tampering lie in a very public forum would have exposed the liars to charges of liable and slander."

You may want to take that argument up with 1) Molly Ball, who reported the tampering on May 1 in the Review Journal; 2) Howard Hirsch, who publicly pointed out that the delegate election in CD2 was little more than an organized grab-ass, and 3) Anyone who was actually at the convention and saw with their own eyes, including several local bloggers who've said as much.

You can claim there's no evidence, Doug, but I rather suspect you weren't there. Either that or you really don't have a firm grasp on reality. Maybe it's both.

You'll notice in the above story that the RNC slapped the Nevada GOP for the method of appointing delegates.

I'll give you one guess as to why they didn't buy the b.s. about the "illegal recess" you and clowns like Carl Bunce have been peddling.

Because the voting irregularities were sufficient reason to bring the whole charade to a halt.

The Ron Paul people had an opportunity to come back and vote in a clean and fair election on June 26. They chose to sit that one out.

Should we feel sorry for a bunch of liars and cheats who tried to disenfranchise the 86% of Republicans who simply can't stand your John Bircher, neo-nazi loving, hypocritical candidate?

    Uh, I don't think so.

Doug Nusbaum wrote on August 29, 2008 02:43 PM: Re Election Tampering:
The entire process was recorded. So when Marshall Tucker claims "A number of observers pointed out the reason the April 26 Nevada Republican Convention was shut down:

Election tampering." It is easy to see such a statement for what it is. Just another version of what Lenin, and Later Goebels did: viz. The Big lie. The idea behind this is that if the lie is big enough and told often enough it will come to be believed by everyone, including the one telling it.

Unfortunately for Mr. Tucker, with Video recordings so common, this lie technique is much harder to do.

Note that no one who is asserting this lie offers any evidence to support it. Even the Local Party "officials" did not, apparently, offer this lie to the RNC. Well, at least it is not part of the story. I was not there. I am sure if it had been offered, then we would have heard about such an allegation.

I think that attempting to offer the tampering lie in a very public forum would have exposed the liars to charges of liable and slander. And the Nevada party officials did not think that the RNC was made up of exceedingly gullible people.

Since the NV GOP was intent on telling everyone who their delegates would be, Paul supporters, AND OTHERS, rightfully stepped up to the plate to assert their rights as outlined by the party.

Marshall Tucker wrote on August 29, 2008 11:24 AM: Surprising the Nevada GOP continues to let Terhune do all the talking without a response.

Way too polite, if you ask me.

A number of observers pointed out the reason the April 26 Nevada Republican Convention was shut down:

    Election tampering.

It's something you won't hear people like Carl Bunce, Jason Holloway, or Wayne Terhune ever talk about.

When the Ron Paul supporters decided to play fast and loose with the delegate election -- voting more than once, voting in the wrong districts, that sort of thing -- the Nevada GOP was perfectly within bounds to say, "Okay, let's take a break until we can do this clean and fair."

But clean and fair ain't in the Paulista playbook. That's why they sat out the July 26 reconvene. Because the gig was up.

Sure, by allowing Bunce and his merry band of tards to derail the delegate election, the Nevada GOP was undoubtedly "inept," but who's really to blame?

Michael Green wrote on August 29, 2008 10:51 AM: Well, Jack, I wouldn't say I'm unhappy with my choice--he is a lot more centrist than I am, but I don't think my views are electable anyway. I do think it's nice to have a future president, as I hope he is, who can speak and write an entire sentence in the English language!

But the two parties make a mistake on the one hand by being too pandering. On the other hand, they are trying to reach the greatest number with their positions. I don't dispute you on your displeasure, but I think it's a problem (or benefit?) of our political system.

The very best of the two parties- Party A and Other Party A- have been vetted by their respective "leadership" and are now proudly and pompously put on display for us to "choose." Hooray, for now is the greatest of times in American democracy!

I'd like to borrow a chapter from the playbook of our "representatives." I'm declaring war. You know, like the war on drugs, war on poverty, war on illiteracy, war on terror, war on insert euphemism for distracting public and stealing their money. Career politicians- you are in my sights. I'm waging a campaign to strike 'reelect' from the American lexicon. You, members of Party A and Other Party A, have succeeded in poisoning the electorate, dividing us into groups of bickering ninnies, and conspired to keep us from thinking critically about all of your actions to deceive us and pillage our collective wealth.

    NO MORE!!!
