Leader of prison gang sentenced

17 years ordered in Aryan Warriors case

The leader of a violent prison gang was sentenced Wednesday to nearly 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to corrupting prison guards, distributing drugs and orchestrating violent attacks on fellow inmates to enhance his position with the gang.

Daniel Joseph Egan, 33, is one of 13 Aryan Warriors indicted last year in connection with the string of crimes, most of which were committed inside the High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs.

  • U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson sentenced Egan, who is also known as "Dano," to 200 months in prison and six years of supervised release.

The Aryan Warriors gang is made up solely of white members. They were accused of operating illegal gambling rings; extorting money through individuals, violence and threats; and assaulting fellow inmates.

Two other gang members also pleaded guilty and have yet to be sentenced. Ten members await trial.

The indictment says Egan ordered an October 2004 attack on Mark Fechtman, a rival gang member at High Desert, who was slashed multiple times with a razor-like blade. It also said Egan ordered a 2005 attack on inmate Cody Dunn, who was stabbed 16 times.

Egan spent eight years in the prison system for possessing and distributing drugs. He was released two years ago, but quickly found himself in trouble again. In July 2006, Egan was arrested on charges of domestic battery and drug possession.

Two months later, Egan was arrested for attempting to break into a car at Sam's Town. The Metropolitan Police Department found a Glock 9 mm handgun and brass knuckles in Egan's car, according to the arrest report. In September 2006, he was again arrested on existing warrants. In May 2007, Boulder City police arrested Egan for possession of drugs and a dangerous weapon.

Prisons should be so strict that anyone who organizes, leads, or joins a gang gets shot on site. Prisons should be like intense military camps where the prisoners do hard labor all day. Any prisoner who misbehaves should get extremely painful punishment, torture in some cases. Prisons should be so hellish and miserable that criminals are scared straight. Prisons should be earths version of the biblical hell complete with a pit of fire.

We send the criminals to them and $5000 a year and after 5 years they send him back so he can share his story with other a**holes that want to follow in his footsteps. I bet the stories won't be uplifting.

The guy is out of jail in 2006, a convicted felon and is arrsted 4 times on multiple charges before he goes back to the slammer where he apparently lives just as good of a life as if he was on the outside, only to accumulate yet more charges in jail. Looks like to me that the DA and the courts and judges have more important things to take care of rather than chasing Halverson around.

That was one of the most rambling nonsense posts I have ever seen!
I can agree that they should throw the guards in with Egan and all of the people in prison should be in one big room with a blanket and a cot, one meal loaf a day and a daily beating to keep their criminal a** in line.

First The guards aren't little kids-this guy didn't corrupt some guards-these guards are grown men working in a profession when they chose to do the wrong thing and should have to serve in a cell with their bad influencer their-secondly these kind of people should be in solitare confinement-the others in there should not have to fear for their lives- after all not every person in there was really guilty of there charge and some actually may have done something stupid and is paying for their crime and will come back out to not to repeat their mistake-murderers and drug addicts well that's diff. a drug addict may not be a murderer but after the addiction gets so bad they could kill to get that fix and gang members thats what they do
