Robbers hit Hilton's Superbook

A pair of gun-toting bandits robbed the Las Vegas Hilton's Race and Sports Superbook early Friday.

Although Las Vegas police did not provide the size of the haul, one source put the amount at $570,000.

  • Two individuals with handguns entered the sports book shortly before 6:15 a.m. and demanded money from a ticket maker's window.

"They were wearing stuff that totally obscured their face and hands," Sgt. Chris Tomaino said. "They were in and out in about 30 seconds."

Police couldn't tell what sex the individuals were, he said.

No one was injured in the robbery, according to police.

A getaway car with Nevada license plates was recovered by police shortly after the heist, Tomaino said. The robbers had switched vehicles.

Few people were in the sports book at the Hilton, on Paradise Road between Sahara Avenue and Desert Inn Road, at the time of the robbery, he said.

Investigators are carefully reviewing surveillance video for clues that would lead to the capture of the robbers, he said.

Tomaino wouldn't say how much was taken, but was "enough to catch our attention."

A hotel executive said the robbers got away with a combination of cash and casino chips.

Police have requested anyone with information about the case call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Over the past 10 years, the bean counters at the hotel have slashed the number of officers to bare minimum, dropped the wages to $10 per hour and took away their guns. Security is looked at as a non-revenue generating department, so no money is put into it. Did management want a gunfight to ensue in the public area? Security is taught to be a proactive force, but not be be heroes.
The layout of the Superbook is really poorly designed and as Eric stated, this robbery is long overdue. An inside job? Perhaps. But anyone that cases the joint for a couple days will figure out the best time and place for a robbery.
As for this monetary loss being covered by insurance, don't kid yourself. Major hotels like the Hilton are self-insured. Every security report is aimed at preventing a lawsuit. The hotel has teams of lawyers to keep from paying out cash to every Joe wanting to sue over an eyelash in a cup of soup.

Security proteceion was always minimal and I often thought what my reaction would be if we were ever robbed, because it would be so easy to walk-in point a gun and say give that money. We were seriously a robbery waiting to happen. So i'm not at all suprised that this has happened and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out this was an inside job or the people that committed this robbery are in someway connected to CAGE,SPORTSBOOK, OR SECURITY personal.

    You are so right Joshua.

So you can be employee of the year and get a paid trip to Hawaii?Hey casinos-you get what you pay for-pay real wages for security-you'll get people that actually care. When will these greedy corporations learn you ask? They won't-they want to profit at everyone else's expense. I'm happy no guards were hurt or killed-they did exactly as they should-see something go down-don't get involved and just call metro-insurance will cover the theft. The casino won't be there for your family when you are gone-they just put another ad in the paper to replace you-sad but true in todays "gaming" world......

BLM won’t let us ride our quads around the Sunrise Mountain area anymore … so I’m wondering how many dead bodies and burnt out stolen vehicles have accumulated since the last time I've been out there?

Danny Ocean wrote on September 27, 2008 08:32 AM: This is too cool! The Hilton sports book just begs for it. The entrance is right off Joe W. Brown and the cashiers are right inside.
But why do I doubt this $500k figure? There's no reason to have this much cash at a sports book at 6 a.m. on a weekday morning. If they do, the management is also just beggin' for it.

Zippy wrote on September 27, 2008 08:19 AM: Police, keep your eye on Sunrise Mountain, you will find their remains up there in the "wise guy" cemetery.
