Neonopolis to get three new tenants

Activity at struggling mall excites mayor

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman got out of his chair and danced Wednesday as the City Council finished approving permits for three new tenants in Neonopolis, a shopping mall at the Fremont Street Experience that's had trouble retaining businesses.

"One Neonopolis thing after another," Goodman said. "I'm flabbergasted. I'm so happy I could dance a jig!"

    • And he did, although it was more soft-shoe shuffle than Riverdance.

    In unanimous votes, the council:

    • Gave Telemundo permission to put satellite dishes on the roof and install a broadcasting office on the third floor

    • Approved a liquor permit for Wet Ultra Lounge and Bar, a planned 12,000-square-foot upscale nightspot

    • OK'd a liquor license for La Luna Italian Restaurant.

    The shopping center has struggled for years, limping along with a handful of tenants despite its prime location on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street.

    Wet Ultra Lounge and La Luna are expected to open Dec. 15. Telemundo is set to be moved in by February.

    Councilman Ricki Barlow suggested that Goodman call on the Wet Ultra Lounge for something besides a martini.

    "The gentleman ... said he offered free salsa lessons," Barlow said. "You may want to take advantage of that."
