Poll finds Porter, Titus in statistical tie

Survey also shows thin lead for Obama in area

State Sen. Dina Titus may have a slight edge in her battle to unseat Rep. Jon Porter, but the race remains essentially tied, according to a new poll of the 3rd Congressional District commissioned by a liberal Web site.

The poll of 400 likely 3rd District voters, conducted by Maryland-based Research 2000 last week for Daily Kos, found Titus, the Democratic challenger, leading Porter, the Republican incumbent, 47 percent to 45 percent.

  • The razor-thin margin was within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Most other public polls have also found a close race for the 3rd District, which covers mostly suburban areas of Clark County, including Henderson and parts of Summerlin.

Porter hopes to win re-election to a fourth term, while Titus, the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for governor in 2006, hopes to capitalize on the increased number of registered Democrats in the district. In 2006, Porter won by less than 2 percentage points.

The poll found Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama winning his race in the district by a slightly larger margin than Titus in hers, 48 percent to 44 percent.

It also found that although both Democrats had a huge edge among those who have already taken advantage of early voting, the Republicans stand to make up significant ground among those who still intend to vote.

In the poll, Titus was the choice of 56 percent of those who had already voted, Porter 44 percent. But among likely voters who haven't yet cast ballots, the two were tied at 46 percent apiece.

Obama had the votes of 56 percent of those polled who had already voted, versus 38 percent for Republican nominee John McCain. Among those polled who hadn't voted, it was Obama 47 percent, McCain 45 percent.

A spokesman for Porter said the poll was a good sign for the congressman because it showed Titus lagging behind Obama's level of support.

"If this poll is accurate, it means that despite the Democrats' wave, Porter has the momentum," Matt Leffingwell said.

Titus spokesman Andrew Stoddard, however, said the poll was proof that Titus is winning despite a relentless attack campaign waged by Porter. Stoddard said: "Voters in the 3rd District are turned off by Congressman Porter's constant lies about Dina Titus."

So, she was being paid by UNLV AND, at the same time, paid by the State. Both checks came from taxpayer funds although from two separate "pots". So, the ad is factual in that she did double dip. Is it a technicality? Yes. Did she really do anything wrong? No. But she DID double dip.

    PerfectTiming,

I was not the one that said they were extremely liberal (although I think they are). It was their own studies that they discovered they were anti-conservative and pro-liberal and actually provided 80% more positive coverage to Obama than to McCain and at least 60% negative coverage of McCain. The liberal press stated they were even shocked at how liberal their slant was.

PerfectTiming wrote on October 27, 2008 07:35 PM: Steve,

Of course there are some media outlets that have a liberal bias (Las Vegas Weekly, Citylife), but there are also those that have a conservative bias, such as the RJ and Fox News. I think most reasonable Americans are tired of accusations that anything that is not borderline fascist has a liberal bias to it. What you consider liberal many others may consider moderate.

Michael Green wrote on October 27, 2008 06:43 PM: Perhaps, Steve, you should check when the meetings took place. They were after the semester. All of us who teach full-time in the system are paid on a 12-month contract, whether or not we are actually teaching over, say, Christmas. Titus did nothing wrong, you know it, Porter knows it, and the man in the moon knows it.

As to the "left-wing" bias, are some of the media biased? Yes. Pro-left? Yes. But to say Fox News is fair is stupid--yes, stupid--and not at all well informed.

Steve wrote on October 27, 2008 06:15 PM: Also, Mr. Green, there have been several studies done recently showing that the press, in general, is extremely biased, liberal, left-wing. Some of these were even done by the press and some of them were surprised they were actually so liberal and biased as people with intelligence had been telling them. So, you can slam Fox News as much as you want, it won't change the facts.

Steve wrote on October 27, 2008 06:09 PM: Michael Green,

I still say the ads do NOT lie. It is a FACT (and if you'd care to check somewhere besides email from Titus you'd find it) that Titus did attend a couple of state meetings in Carson City before the start of the 2005 session while she was still getting paid by UNLV. Titus began her unpaid leave a few days later.

That, sir, IS double dipping. The ad does not say for how long she double dipped so, therefore, the ad did NOT lie.

Perhaps instead of trying to call people more informed than you names, you should check your "facts".

Michael Green wrote on October 27, 2008 05:42 PM: Anyone who would say they won't vote for Titus because of her accent is lying to themselves and everyone else. If you like her or dislike her, fine. If you agree or disagree with her, fine. But saying that is like saying you won't vote for Barack Obama because of his ears or John McCain because he likes to say, "My friends." It's an excuse for something else, and I think we all know what that something else is.

Spell Check wrote on October 27, 2008 04:58 PM: "She gone," - your prejudice is astonishing. I'm basing my vote on their deeds, not their words. Certainly not their accents. I have met many backwoods clods here in southern Nevada, and you are most certainly one of them. Now please go back to your single-wide, wearing your bathrobe and dirty white socks to continue displaying your brilliant reasoning behind your voting decisions.
