Couple were in financial distress

Police suspect deaths a murder-suicide

A married couple who died earlier this week in what North Las Vegas police call a murder-suicide were under heavy financial strain, according to public records.

The bodies of Jeffrey L. Lingle, 38, and Graciela Mullis, 44, were found by police Monday outside a red pickup parked a few miles north of Losee Road and the Las Vegas Beltway. They both lived in Las Vegas.

  • Lingle's death was the result of a gunshot wound to the head, which was ruled a suicide by the Clark County coroner's office.

The coroner's office identified Mullis on Thursday but had not determined her cause of death.

According to Clark County records, Mullis owned a 1,064-square-foot home in the north valley that went into foreclosure in May. Court records showed Mullis filed for bankruptcy in October 2007. The records indicated she had nearly $25,000 in medical bills.

She and Lingle married in 2005, according to county marriage records.

Neighbors said the couple had been upset about losing their home. They had sold a Ford Mustang to make ends meet, said 31-year-old Beatriz Iribe, who was the couple's neighbor.

"She told me, 'I'm so sad because of the house,'" Iribe recalled.

KLAS-TV, Channel 8, interviewed a friend of the couple who was not identified. The friend said Lingle recently had lost his job. The friend told the KLAS reporter that Lingle and Mullis went to the desert Monday, the day after Lingle's birthday. The friend said Lingle wrote a suicide note about the couple's desperation.

"We couldn't do this anymore, and we swore we would die together," read the note shown on Channel 8.

Debbie Gant-Reed, crisis-line coordinator for the Crisis Call Center regional suicide prevention hot line, said the nonprofit agency has seen a sharp increase in calls related to foreclosure and other financial problems.

The number of "basic needs" callers -- who include people who are despondent over foreclosures, lost jobs and the inability to pay for bills, rent or food -- has more than doubled in the past year, she said.

The callers "feel very helpless, especially if they're older people who spent a lot of time working for those things," Gant-Reed said. "They don't feel like they can recover from that."

Parents often call that they no longer can provide for their children, Gant-Reed said.

"Those are some of the most despondent," she said. "They still have families to support, but no jobs."

The center last month took 333 "basic needs" crisis calls, compared with 136 in October 2007.

About three-quarters of the center's calls come from within Nevada, with others coming from California, Arizona and other states.

I feel for these people's families. What they did was a permanent problem to a temporary solution. Having almost taken my life about a year and a half ago, I realized you just have to work through your problems and ask for help. If a complete lifestyle change is in order, I'd rather be living in a studio apartment with my boyfriend than not living at all. And I'm sure my family thanks God every day that it wasn't my day to go that day. So people, if you're in a situation like this, call every agency you can for assistance, and call on your family for support also. Get on unemployment, and just try to make due. It WILL get better. Don't end your lives over it. YOur familes are the ones that suffer. Be stronger, for yourselves, and your familes as well.

Anytime you put your faith in govt, be ready to be dissapointed. I didn't vote for Obama, but I hope he does well cause we're all in this together, but you gotta produce for yourself, nobody else. If your waiting for the govt to help everyone your in for a long wait. I'm well off because I work my butt off. I never quit and I don't blame others if I don't do well, I just try that much harder. You Obama supporters are going to be in for a huge letdown.

Never lose your dignity and self respect and don't let anyone try to take them from you. Take all the blame that is yours and keep driving. Accepting responsibility is accepting life. No one ever promised me an easy life and I don't expect one. I fight adversity and try my best to be the victor. Sometimes I'm not, but I FIGHT!!

I was out of work for over a year and ended up having to accept something that doesn't even pay the bills just to eat. I'm losing my home and my mate of 10 years deserted me for a woman that could support him. Some days, I wonder why I get up in the morning. I totally understand why they did what they did. A person can only take so much. But, does anyone really believe that those currently in power give a d______? Of course not, as long as their pockets are full they couldn't care less. I can only pray that Obama is the man he seems to be because if he is, and if we all support him, we CAN get out of this mess. I wrote to Sen. Reid and got no reply and local agencies treat you like dirt so, what now?

Building of the Hoover Dam brought legalized gaming, Many chose too stay away from Vegas and lived in Boulder City where no gambling was norm. Of those people they survived others who went to Vegas on payday were all asking for handouts after the Dam thing was built. Many moved on, many stayed and prospered many committed suicide. I owned a company and went belly up, I was responsible for my debt no government bail out yet the IRS said i owed much more yet i showed them checks cashed by the IRS they still took the car and tried to garnish my wages. Life was getting tough and i did try too attempt Suicide until i took a hard look at stories of how many thrived through the depression era and survived. Many told me that suicide was a easy way out for me but not for my family. I looked back on what i had as a child growing up and decided to fight my way through this and today i am still in dept yet 150,000 less. I was happy that the day i put that gun to my head my father was tough love and called me a chicken sh?t for not standing up and fight this problem i had with alcohol and gambling. Today i write this, how it helps, i have no clue, my two cents. Oh by the way, I won against the IRS but lost all that they took and was refunded half. Suicide is not the answer but living a different style like no alcohol for 12 years has opened up my thinking and eyes. Today i win because I am here.

I certainly understand the feelings this couple were going thru.

I can only tell others facing the same problems you get thru it and life does return to normal.
The pain of the lose doesn’t completely go away but an greater appreciation of your life returning to normal is one gift that comes from your past loses.

For those blaming all on Bush you need to inform yourself of the equality of both parties for our horrible economic times.
The democrats had many opportunities to avoid the housing collapse but Barney Frank and other democrats stopped it in 2004 and again in 2006.

Clinton signed the packaging of bad loans in 1999, and before that NAFTA.

Talking about Bush he is and was the worst person and administration tripling any mistakes made that lead us to these bad times and getting worse.
Probably the worst president in history.
So blame both parties, all congress for an absolute failure by government to represent citizen’s best interest.

While government is the problem those facing huge loses hang in there, and while it will all take time you do rebuild.
