Crash kills R-J carrier, hurts two

A contract newspaper carrier for the Review-Journal was killed while driving to his route with his wife early Saturday morning.

Las Vegas police said a man driving a 2003 BMW Z4 convertible ran a red light heading west on Spring Mountain Road at Rainbow Boulevard at 3:18 a.m.

  • Alejandro San Pedro, 31, was driving north on Rainbow in a 2002 Nissan Xterra and struck the driver's side of the BMW in the intersection.

No one in either vehicle was wearing a seat belt, police said. San Pedro was pronounced dead at the scene.

San Pedro's wife, 19-year-old Esther San Pedro Martin, was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition, police said. She was helping him on his route, according to Review-Journal Distribution Center Manager Chris Smith.

The driver of the BMW, 36-year-old William Bierlein of Henderson, was also taken to UMC in critical condition, according to police.

Smith said San Pedro had been working out of the Blue Diamond distribution center, near Blue Diamond Road and Valley View Boulevard, since August. His route started in the area of Charleston and Rainbow boulevards.

It's great that so many people are quick to jump to the conclusion that drugs or alcohol were involved. Would it be such a bad idea to wait for a follow up story before you start making your own thoeries about what happened? You people don't know this guy from Adam. Maybe he works two jobs to provide a better life for his family. There are many factors that could have played into this man running a traffic signal. I see it daily on the short trip I take to work. I guess its no big deal until somebody loses their life. We all have a lesson to learn from this tragedy. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT!!!!

I would never maliciously slander someone. Especially someone I "DO" know very well. Article may not speak it, but "I" am privy of the FACT!!! And note, I am NOT condoning his major flaw in judgement.

PS. Is that really the "real question"?

Free Nevada wrote on December 14, 2008 11:03 PM: Hey "L", how is it you malign the BMW Z3 driver you say you 'know' as having been drunk when he caused a fatal traffic accident when that fact isn't present in the article? You really sound like an attorney looking to taint the jury pool.

The real question is why are we delivering newspapers in Sports Utility Vehicles. It's not just the gas. It's the break pads, transmission, carbon dioxide/smog emissions, etc. --all coming out of the driver's wages. I hope RJ comes up with a solution in memory of the difficult life that the late driver and his wife must have had.

Show respect towards your fellow americans regardless of their race, religion, creed or opinion. I knew the driver @ fault. Very good guy, great career, wife & kids. But unfortunately, he messed up BIG and should pay! Another life lost due to drinking and driving.

K wrote on December 14, 2008 01:13 PM: Danielle, you are the idiot. I call like I see it. I only said they need to start caring about themselves enough and their kids too, to start buckling up. IT'S THE LAW, STUPID!!

K wrote on December 14, 2008 08:02 AM: That beemer is not very big. But it must be built really strong because you would have thought the SUV would have crushed it not the other way around. I'm really happy I have a BMW now. Very good cars.

Now back to issue at hand. The guy driving the beemer was clearly at fault. The RJ carrier and his wife should have been seat belted in, but that just goes back to what I said the other day and people blasted me for it, but Mexican people aren't up there on the list of people who travel in vehicles safely. I seldom see them seatbelted, or their children safely in child seats. More likely to see them crowded into a car or a truck with a bunch of kids in the bed. Sad.

So many lives lost because of stupidity. Can't say they don't know better because signs are all over town in English and Spanish about buckling up.

tom wrote on December 14, 2008 07:50 AM: Joe, read the article again, more carefully. The driver who was killed -- the newspaper deliveryman -- ran into the side of the BMW. He was not t-boned and hit from the side. A seat belt would have helped him. People need to read stories more carefully.

Guy wrote on December 14, 2008 07:15 AM: Joe, Your are an idiot. You sound like my grandfather. I don't want to be trapped in a burning car. I would rather not wear my seatbelt and be thrown clear. Again what an idiot.
