Halverson imprisoned for assault on his wife

As a judge, Elizabeth Halverson would listen to victims testify in court about how they were hurt in criminal cases.

But on Wednesday, she entered a Las Vegas courtroom as a victim herself and said her husband beat her so severely with a frying pan that she still has trouble seeing.

  • "My life has been totally turned upside down," Halverson said through sobs.

Halverson spoke during the sentencing hearing for her husband, Edward, 49. He was accused of beating the judge at their home near Tropicana Avenue and U.S. Highway 95 in September.

At the end of the hearing, District Judge David Barker sentenced Edward Halverson to spend three to 10 years in prison for attacking his wife.

During the hearing, Edward Halverson said he was defending himself.

"If she didn't pull a knife on me and threaten me, I wouldn't have clocked her," he said.

"When you say 'clock,' that's an offensive word," Barker said. "You didn't 'clock' your wife. You beat your wife."

Elizabeth Halverson appeared in court wearing a straw hat to cover her wounds.

She was in critical condition after the attack and spent more than two weeks in the hospital. She needed more than 100 medical staples to help heal the wounds in her head. She also was beaten on her arms.

She said she's still recovering from the beating. She can't type because her hand is still injured, she said, and she has difficulty reading for more than a few minutes at a time because of the pain in her head.

Elizabeth Halverson said she wasn't happy that her husband was offered a plea and objected to the deal. It wasn't fair, she said, because her husband wanted to kill her during the attack.

Her mother agreed, saying the attack wasn't domestic violence -- it was attempted murder.

"The way he treated my daughter, like a prisoner," Maria Veimau said. "She's lucky to be alive."

Edward Halverson was initially charged with attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm.

In October, he entered an Alford plea to one count of battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm.

An Alford plea means he doesn't admit wrongdoing, but he acknowledges there would be enough evidence to convict him.

The Halversons have been married for about 10 years.

Edward Halverson has been arrested at least 10 times for various offenses, including drug possession and burglary. He spent almost four years in prison.

Elizabeth Halverson took the bench in early 2007. Soon after she began serving, she was accused of harassing staff and mishandling trials, among other charges.

The Nevada Judicial Discipline Commission removed her from the bench in November and permanently barred her from serving as a judge again.

The State is famous for its corruption dating back to the BUGSY SEGEL days, and its a clear indication of how this matter has been adjudicated. Legal authorities are as crooked as the next guy.

A con artist is a con artist. While Mrs Halverson may have been a very educated intelligent person, that does not mean she is clarvoyant and would know what a con artist and criminal Edward Halverson is.

It is hard to say why women stay in abusive situations. There may be many reasons why. Perhaps in Mrs. Halverson's case, some of her phyical disabilites made it impossible are harder for her to leave. It is hard to say.

What is real is that domestic violence is highly unreported in this country. Batterers often get short sentences. Women who fight back have always been treated more harshly by the courts. That is fact.

Elizabeth Halverson may not have been the easiest person to get along with. However, NO ONE deserves what Edward Halverson did to her. NO ONE.

Mr. Halverson beat Elizabeth Halverson savagely and brutally. Elizabeth Halverson was in critical condition and was close to death from her injuries.

Her recovery will most likely take longer than the time Edward Halverson will be in jail.

Those of you who find this amusing or feel bad for Ed Halverson need to really examine your feelings. You need to also put in perspective how you would feel if this were your child, sister, mother, daughter. Would you still be patting Ed Halverson on the back and appaulding his behavior?

Does Elizabeth Halverson deserve to be beat because she does not look like the rest of us? Does she deserve to be beat almost to death because she is on oxegen, because she is disabled? Because she is morbidly obese?

    I think not.

Edward Halverson should be tried for attemtped murder as that truly was the crime he committed. Had this not been Elizabeth Halverson, I don't think this sort of plea bargain would exist.

I believe you but they talk about what an educated person Mrs was in an earlier article. An educated person wouldn't have married this person and if he was mistreating her for such a long time she was a judge that could of gotten help unlike joe public.
I do believe they liked to antagonize ea. other.

    He married Elizabeth Halverson.

What more could the Court do to him?

    Hasn't he suffered enough already?

    Did I mention Dominic Rizzolo?

therealed wrote on January 15, 2009 05:19 AM: I have know and used to work with Mr. Halverson for years. He is a vindictive predetor. I have seen him do countless underhanded things to people he has worked with. The scariest part about Mr. Halverson is he is calculated and sneaky. One time at work he and one of the guys got into an altercation. Ed Halverson pretended like everything was cool. The next day he was seen putting sugar in the guy's gas tank and messing with items in the man's truck. This is the kind of person who smiles in front of your face and act like he is your friend but will stab you in the back when you turn away. He will then pretend he has done nothing and laugh and boast about it later.

I have seen him antagonize his wife then act as if he has done nothing. This is a cold, calculated career criminal who refused to work yet told everyone he quit his job to help his wife.

A very scary person with no concious and no integrity. He showed his true colors again when he got up in court and lied stating Judge Halverson threatned him with a knife. His response to Judge Barker, when the Judge said he did more than just "clock his wife" of "I am sorry you feel that way" showed how cold and unremoseful he is. But again, that is the Ed Halverson I know. The same one who would cut break wires on someone's car then go get a buger and fries and laugh about what he just did. Never giving any thought or care of what he had done and how another human being would now be in jepordy. That is the real Edward Halverson.
