Police say burglary suspect fatally shot by homeowner

A homeowner fatally shot a burglary suspect Sunday afternoon at his northeast valley residence, Las Vegas police said.

Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said that about 4:15 p.m., police responded to a shooting at a residence at the 4600 block of Crystal Peak Drive, near Cheyenne Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard.

  • Roberts said the homeowner reported returning home and finding the suspect inside.

Police did not identify the suspect, who died at the scene, or the homeowner. Roberts said the deceased appeared to be in his 30s.

He did not know whether the suspect was armed.

Roberts said it appears the homeowner would not be charged but emphasized that the investigation was in its early stages.

Roberts added the homeowner's gun appeared to be registered.

I think you should think twice before you go trying to hurt someone in thier own house.

Tell me please that you lock up your weapons when you are NOT home. This is just one way criminals get THEIR weapons.

Yes Rick, some are locked in a standing gun safe that bolts to the floor and weighs too much to be stolen. Three travel with me everywhere I go.

Is shooting the criminal the only way Metro will respond and investigate a burglary?

No, they'll respond if a weapon was stolen in the burglary... Just another reason mine are in a standing safe bolted to the floor. Had one stolen that was locked in a small safe that could be carried. Thankfully, I got it back.

Sounds like the homeowner was carrying a gun - hope he had a concealed weapons permit. I doubt the homeowner had time to go upstairs or wherever to find his gun.

Joe, if the weapon isn't concealed, you don't need a CCW permit. Thus being the reason its a CONCEALED weapon permit.

The burglar had a criminal record dating back to 1992. Why was he free? He should have been in prison. Oh well, we don't have to worry about him anymore now that he's dead.

Herb, the perp JUST GOT OUT of prison.

I would NEVER convict a homeowner for protecting shooting a burglar, unless it was the hamburglar LOL.

Where the hell did you get your Law Degree? The victim need only feel that his life is in danger to bust a cap on a burglar. The perp. doesn't have to even utter a word. Did you pass the bar? If so that question scenario was on the test. Now run off and chase ambulances and leave criminal law to those who know.

No burden to the Judicial System. No burden to the taxpayers. More homeowners need to be armed, and defend their homes against creeps who wish to steal from them or kill them to eliminate witnesses. Great story. God Bless our gun rights.

It sure is nice to see that some value material goods more than human life. No wonder this country is in the mess that it is."

WTF? are you smoking crack Hermit? You must no own anything of value that you worked so hard for that if taken, can't be replaced because of a recent layoff due to downsizing. I am in that position now and as things get worse with the economoy, scumbags like that are going to pop up even more to try and take from those who worked hard to provide things for their families and themselves. My guns are loaded and ready to be unloaded into anyone who dares to come into my home uninvited. Burglars are only there to do harm. Rob you, rape your wife, kidnap you kids and then set your house on fire to cover up the crime. In some cases, it's all the above. I am not taking that chance and neither should anyone else. If you don't want to get shot, don't commit a crime against innocent, hard working American folks. Hermit, go back to your cardboard box down on "F" street you piece of Sh*t!
