Mormon cricket infestation expected

ELKO -- Elko County is again expected to be a hotbed of Mormon cricket activity in Nevada this year, county commissioners were told.

This year's infestation is expected to be similar to last year, when an estimated one million acres were infested with the insects, with "hot spots" around Tuscarora, Mountain City and Jarbidge in the northeastern Nevada county, state entomologist Jeff Knight said.

  • Though cricket numbers were down drastically from 2004 through 2006 when more than 10 million acres were infested, commissioners expressed frustration that the infestation remains more of a problem in Elko County than any other part of the state.

"To me, I think we dropped the ball. If you think I'm happy with what happened (last year), I'm not," Commissioner John Ellison said.

Ellison noted wildfires in recent years have scorched two million acres in the county.

"We cannot lose any more grazing land up there because of crickets and that's why we try to be highly aggressive ... All we want from you guys is a promise you guys are going to be aggressive this year," he told Knight.

But Knight said the program ran more efficiently in 2008 than ever before.

Last year, 6,855 pounds of ground bait was applied statewide, and 6,122 pounds of that was in Elko County. There were no aerial applications.

Though cricket numbers are "on a downhill slide," Knight said funds are available to combat the insect if the infestation reaches levels seen from 2004 to 2006.

Growing up to 2 inches long as adults, the crickets swarm in groups thousands strong, gobbling lawns, gardens and crops. The insect was made infamous by nearly destroying the crops of Utah's Mormon settlers in 1848.

joseph smith made up the lies from stones his dad gave him they found during treasure hunts
smith tossed stones into a hat, and claimed ancient reformed egyptian writings turned into english language.
those gold plates must have been really small to fit in his hat along with those stones.and since there is no reformed egyptian, makes it kind of hard to have any plates of writing than huh ?

    google kinderhook plates.

They do not have paid clergy and the people of the church do the teaching. maybe..just maybe it could be that churches that are for profit do not like this. The Mormons are always one if not the first on scene of disasters such as Katrina and the Sir Lanka disasters. They also help fund medical research and the Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Salvation Army and so many others I believe that even if you don't agree with the teachings that if you truely knew a little about the organization and compassion that these people had you would find a new respect for them. Also they do not take goverment funds of any kind and even have their own welfare system for members in need,so they do not have to put an extra burden on the goverment! They are good hard working giving people!

findout wrote on February 24, 2009 10:08 AM: Hey! You are all so silly! You just keep trying to drudge up the past and distort the facts. The truth about the church is there for all of you! It doesn't change from town to town or even Country to Country. The religion is solid it is the same everywhere and anyone is welcome. I know that you wouldn't go to a car salesman to fix a broken leg. If you want to know about the church go to it's leaders. Call a missionary and read the Book of Mormon. You can also go to wwwmormon.org. We love you no matter what you think of us! You are welcome anytime and we would love to have you. I promise that someone will get you the answers you are looking for but please come to the Mormon Church to find out. Have you ever wondered why these groups are so obsessed with bashing the Mormons? I have been to Mormon churches in many cities and even in other countries. The religion is taught the same everywhere so if you want to know go to the source. it seems so sad that people put so much effort into condeming and bashing a Church. I don't know if they claim to be christian but to me it doesn't seem Christ like. It's so strange. I am not a Catholic but I would never try to condem them. I sure would go to the church and learrn and study about the religion with whatever study material they provide if I wanted to know more. I know that the Mormon church is one of the fastest growing religions. Some people have taken the time to learn. You can too!

What? wrote on February 23, 2009 09:59 PM: You've got to be kidding me. Joseph Smith was murdered by a cowardly mob after having been betrayed by the Governor of Illinois who promised him protection and then left town. The mob rushed up stairs and fired through the door, first killing Joseph's brother Hyrum, then Joseph. Two other men in the jail survived. Joseph wasn't on trial for fraud at that time. Get your facts straight instead of taking your history from some anti-Mormon source. Whatever Joseph Smith may have done (and again, he was never convicted of any charges brought against him), it did not warrant murder by a mob. Do you think it did? If you want to know the truth about the Mormon church, go to the source, www.mormon.org

joseph smith was a fraud as written within your own scriptures wrote on February 23, 2009 08:15 PM:
because joseph smith was not able to be tried for fraud, because he attempted to escape from jail, and it errupted into a gun fight.
doesn't mean he was not guilty .

this truth comes from mormon writings

Full disclosure wrote on February 23, 2009 06:04 PM: I am a Mormon. This story is about crickets. Whenever a story pops up it is funny to read that the anti mos come out, and then the molly mos get all bent and have to answer. Back to the real story, the crickets are cyclical in nature just like drought, fires etc. It amazing to me that man wants to be the solution for all of these problems. Let nature run it's course, The crickets will come and then go, The birds will feed off of them and then become overpopulated, the wild cats and predatory animals will feed on the bird. For Pete's sake, did non of you watch the Lion King or are you waiting for the version starring Donny Osmond.

These people don't make a dime for the time they put into teaching their religion. It seems to me that the people who spread all of the ugly rumors about them are paid clergy or someone who got their info from paid clergy or some ex mormon who wants to make a buck writing a book full of lies about their religion. They are good people who deserve our respect and the right to practice their relgion without persecution. I have many Mormon friends and I have a mountain of respect for them!

Joseph Smith wrote on February 23, 2009 03:49 PM: What? Joseph Smith was in jail for fraud? Did you know that Joseph Smith, for all the legal hounding he took throughout his life from those that feared Mormonism, was never convicted of any charges brought against him? The truth was he was murdered while awaiting trial on yet another trumped up charge.

Actually wrote on February 23, 2009 03:46 PM: Actually... why don't you read the Book of Mormon and find where it demands the practice of polygamy. Read it very carefully, cover to cover. I think what you'll find there is a book that testifies of Jesus Christ and encourages all to live according to his example. If your experience with Mormons is different than that, I'm sorry. But I think you'll find that most try to do just what the Bible and Book of Mormon teach us we should be doing. That's more than most Mormon haters I've come in contact with can say.

Bottom line, if you don't like what the Mormon religion preaches, don't join with them. There's no need to hurl bigoted insults at them, though.
