North Las Vegas firefighters agree to defer 3.5% cost-of-living raises

North Las Vegas' firefighter union has agreed to defer a 3.5 percent annual cost-of-living increase to save the financially strapped city money, officials said Monday.

The 202 firefighters represented by the International Association of Firefighters Local 1607 voted last week on the concessions, which also include cutting firefighter uniform allowances from about $800 a year to about $400 and deferring sick leave "sell-back" for a year.

Employees have the option of selling back to the city a portion of their unused sick leave each year.

Pending City Council approval, the raises will be deferred to later years.

The firefighters' contract with the city, which expires in mid-2012, will be extended two years as part of the agreement.

"I am proud to announce that our members overwhelmingly supported and passed these measures," Jeff Hurley, president of the union, said in a city press release.

The city is in the midst of a hiring freeze and has trimmed about $16 million from its 2008-09 budget. The city hopes to soon wrap up similar negotiations with its Teamsters and police unions.

City officials said delaying or eliminating employees' cost-of-living raises will save the city about $13.5 million.

Employees' separate annual "step" raise will not be affected.

The city initiated the talks, which began in late February, as a way to save money in the face of declining tax revenue caused by the economic slowdown.

And THAT dollar amount bumps up the amount they get for Pensions in their brief 20 year to full retirement program. In California, firefighters were bleeding the state with Standby Overtime, and just before retirement, claiming a disability, to retire at a lower taxed rate, and disability money benefits. When I see how many fires were started in California by firefighters, at least, the ones who got caught, I feel these "Heroes" are pampered, and overpaid. Fire-stations don't layoff, and the full timers still manage to get overtime, even though there are no fires.

Mike wrote on April 07, 2009 04:48 PM: Everyone can complain about the unions and how evil they are. If it wasn't for the unions most of youwould still be working well over a 40 hr work week with not overtime or comp time. There would not be FMLA or many other natonal or state laws and programs that everyone, union or not enjoys. Unions stood up for every American worker to change working conditons. Go ahead a cry all you want, but whether you like it or not, you are enjoying benifits that unions got you!

bll cocaine kolar wrote on April 07, 2009 04:39 PM: if you want to see paramedics tired of doing the work they are overpaid for and are not doing, ask yourself why rescue 31 was moved out to station 23 ,violating the sunrise manor bond issue,so harold wyatt could avoid running medical calls, station 23 remained so busy, harold wyatt hated it, and decided to relocate the fema heavy rescue station over to station 21, which cost 3 employees their captains badges which dave leedham barbra nygard and mark stephenson were passed over for. paramdeic chief steve hanson lied and said station 27 was without a certificate of occupancy, yet more than 1 fire station currently functions under a temporary occupancy permit, but the excuse was used to deny the promotions to these 3 employees.for nefarious purposes within the paramedic division.,paramedic union official ed beaman promised to build a union hall, bought land with union dues, had it subdivided /rezoned /sold half/ family pocketed the profits, and then decided to accept an old building on charleston as the new union hall, for political favors.never completing the new hall as promised.the county owes david ,barbra and mark a great deal of back pay.

the phony cry that firefighters see anything more than a samaritan sees
at a car accident, fire,or drowning is a big fat joke.

the paramedic lies to make higher paycheck amounts .
..........it is the bottom line

Sam wrote on April 07, 2009 04:30 PM: I love the banter everytime an article refering to firefighter's pay is published! It's amusing how much people are misinformed or naive to what we as public servants deal with on a day to day basis. I've heard that the average tax payer pays somewhere in the area of 13 dollars per month for 24/7 access to the fire department. It's an "insurance" policy. If you have a car accident, fire, medical emergency, locked your keys in the car, have a broken water heater, need a battery changed in a smoke detector, need help getting up from the floor cause your too weak, or have a problem noone else can help you with... For 13 dollars a month within minutes of calling the fire department you will have someone there to help you, whatever your unfortunate incident might be. ANYTIME and ANYWHERE you will have help. Now compare that to your next cell phone or cable bill. I'd say your getting a bargain for the fire departments service! There will ALWAYS be people that are unhappy with the fire department. The time will come though when those individuals will one day need the help from the fire department. I hope that when that time comes the service provided will change their opinion. Now on a side note... The firefighters are not to blame for any financial hardship the local governments have accrued. If the city and county are in such hard financial times then why is the county currently training 30 new firefighters and will be hiring 30 more in the summer? Thats 60 new saleries, benifits, and cost of training the county commision and managers approved. Is it cheaper to hire new personel or to just pay the overtime?

Today's the Day! wrote on April 07, 2009 02:04 PM: Exactly Steve; you bashers need to remember that it's the UNIONS that have you so angry, not the firefighters, cops or public-sector employees. They are the guys just doing the jobs they applied for, were found qualified for, and were fired for. No special treatment; anyone with the correct qualifications can apply, just like any other job. Not qualified? Who's problem would that be? I'd like to be paid to be a brain surgeon, making 200G's a year, but darn! just not qualified. UNFAIR!
