Moulin Rouge on fire

Las Vegas firefighters are continuing to fight a blaze that appears to be contained to one building on the south side of the historic Moulin Rouge on Bonanza Road.

Las Vegas spokesman Jace Radke said firefighters were called to the blaze about 11:45 a.m. At the fire’s peak, thick smoke plumes reached about 100 feet in the air.

Radke said fire officials don’t know the cause of the blaze. He knows of no injuries. Additional firefighters and engines were added to fight the fire, not because it grew in intensity, but because it was hot and crews are rotating to the fight the blaze.

Joyce Sheets, who works at Nevada Restaurant Services across the street from the Moulin Rogue, said she called 911 when colleagues came to her and said they saw smoke and a window explode from a building on the property.

Sheets said she was initially concerned firefighters might struggle to put out the blaze.

“There was lots of black smoke,” she said. “We were not that far away.”

The now abandoned Moulin Rouge was the city’s first integrated casino, but its run only lasted six months. In the decades since, several unsuccessful attempts have been made to revitalize the property.

The Moulin Rouge suffered a major fire in 2003, which investigators deemed an arson.

Courageous move by LBJ, but it doomed his party. Regardless of which party Lincoln belonged to, a Democratic president actually followed up and delivered on Lincoln's promise, over 100 years later.

Our party was formed out of the Whigs to once and for all free all of America's slaves at tremendous sacrifice of our own blood. We are the party of Lincon, who President Obama, America's first minority president, deeply admires. But the modern descendants of the slaves we freed have gravitated towards the Democratic party because it's governing philosophies are more compatible with the special needs of their community, which has brilliance like Oprah, Obama and Powell on one hand and John Coffey on the other --while still living in the shadow of racists (and THEIR descendants) that were not killed off by the Republican-controlled US army. While all Republicans oppose the Democrats, I don't know any who feel betrayed by the African Americans. Someday, the Oprahs of the world will feel the same way about the weak in their racial community as the Bushes do in theirs and will be able to join the Republicans with a clear conscience. President Obama is helping this.

Last point...when you're a party largely devoid of members of a certain racial group (even if it is for very good reason, as I explained), you get attacked by the least educated members of that racial group for being racist and, unfortunately, real racists will tend to run around proclaiming they are members of your party which only hurts your party more. In other words, two-tooth wonders who hate black people call themselves Republicans and some blacks unfortunately believe it. How to fix? Ray Nagin has some right ideas.

Fair and Balanced Fred wrote on May 06, 2009 07:50 PM: It's a kick to read the reactionary posts by the Republicon ignoramii below -- poorly educated, reactionary right-wing rabble -- who gleefully cheer the partial destruction of our local national icon, the Moulin Rouge, with historic significance not unlike the (far more famous) Cotton Club.

Why do the Republicons HATE Las Vegas history and hate Las Vegas?

But the poorly educated, AM radio rabble ignoramii posting below are completely ignorant of the significance of The Cotton Club as well. Hate, hate, and more Republicon hate.

We may never stop these Republicon haters from making ignorant posts )ad nauseum) while continuing to talk and write about multiple subjects for which they do not even know what they do not know; hence, the Republicon rabble will incessantly continue to parrot the verbal diarrhea of their Republicon party's alpha-male, the bloated Flush Rimjob, as the Repbulicons continue to fade further into racist obscurity.
