Reid unveils Republican list of supporters

Mr. Las Vegas, Dawn Gibbons included

The state's first lady and entertainer Wayne Newton are among 56 prominent Republicans supporting the re-election of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat's campaign announced Wednesday.

Republican kingmaker Sig Rogich and the GOP mayors of Reno and Sparks also are on the list, which Reid touted in a news release as proof of his bipartisan appeal in his home state.

  • "As a lifelong Republican and one who worked closely with former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, I am proud to set partisanship aside and do what is vital for our state during these extraordinarily difficult times," Rogich said in the news release.

"From preserving Lake Tahoe to fighting to protect our gaming and tourist industry from those who would want a greater federal role in our largest industry, Harry Reid ...has never forgotten his roots and has worked tirelessly to fight for Nevada's future," Rogich said.

A campaign strategist for the first President Bush and numerous Nevada candidates over the years, Rogich is a former U.S. Ambassador to Iceland.

Nevada's first lady Dawn Gibbons, a former state assemblywoman, is in the midst of an ugly divorce from Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons.

In addition to Reno Mayor Bob Cashell and Sparks Mayor Geno Martini, the Republican mayors of Wells and Mesquite are on the list supporting Reid.

"These leaders know that I continually work across party lines to help Nevada's families," Reid said in the news release. "I greatly appreciate their support and look forward to working with them as this campaign begins."

Reid doesn't yet have a Republican opponent for next year's election. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee said a slate of endorsements wouldn't make up for Reid's low approval ratings, pointing to a Review-Journal poll last month that found that 45 percent of Nevada voters plan to vote against Reid.

"When nearly half the voters in his home state want to replace him even before Republicans have a candidate, Harry Reid is going to need all the help he can get," Brian Walsh said.

Other names on Reid's list include:

    • Station Casinos executives Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta III.

    • MGM Mirage CEO Jim Murren.

    • Former Lt. Gov. Lonnie Hammargren.

    • Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce President Otto Merida.

    • Republican consultant Jim Denton.

    • Former Clark County Commissioner Mark James.

    • Former Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira.

Again you use dishonest propaganda saying Americans won't do the jobs illegal aliens do.

Business has used the illegals to lower wages and citizens that try to stay in these jobs are alienated by language or race.

Having lived in Vegas since 77 and seen casino departments that once hired a diversified people from black, white, legal immigrant, now mainly only Spanish speaking illegal with fake or stolen ID.
You are truly less than honest on this issue.

If you truly worked the fields you are aware that illegal farm workers hurt legal visa farm workers taking their jobs for less.
So it's not just citizens being displaced.
Illegal immigration is the greatest example of corruption by business and government at citizens costs.

How foolish anyone is to believe in any party or elected official after the massive failure from all.
Not only is Reid one of the failures, he’s one of the biggest along with Pelosi the liar.
From Clinton to Bush and so many in congress we’ve been sold out.

If Reid worked 20hrs a day, seven days a week and the result is the disasters we have now.
I would hardly think it was time well spent.
Mr. Reid like too many other politicians is in the process of pleasing those that own him, big business and special interest. Of course not without his personal gain.

Mr. Clean face is not so clean and what’s going to be left to your grandchildren is the massive debt we owe China, the Arab countries, Briton, and the Caribbean Banks.

The biggest growing economies are China and India where our manufacturing is running for subjugated labor.
We outsourced so much of our businesses that created a huge tax base our ability to play catch up will be after your grandchildren are gone.
    Nice work Reid.

We have walked the picket lines on many occasions and have welcomed the teamsters for all their help. What you may not know or may never want to know is the "BIG PIGTURE"(that's not a misprint) is to what it takes to get it done. He has never forgotten Nevada's causes but it's not like it used to be and YOU know it. Everybody wants a piece of the cake when were the only one baking. If you take an honest look of his past history you will find that he has tried to keep Nevada in the forefront. I will submit that in order to accomplish a greater future submissions must be made. As for the illegals you so unjustly acuse-why won't you do the work they so readily accept is it. Will it lower your standard of life? I used to work with them in the fields and their family traditions far exceed ours.We need them to legal but the Fed's keep blocking the way. There are a multitude of angles to either accept or deny any decision but what ever outcome, live with it to better the nation we live in and the world might be a better place! Since you have lived here all your life you know this valley will always survive you just don't know how you will fit in and how it's all going to turn out. I don't either but I believe!

But I've not seen you walk on water lately OR were you really wake boarding last saturday at the lake? Remember until you can do the real thing it's just pretend

I have lived here all my life, and am familiar with the lies Reid tells. Years ago when Vegas was smaller he promised to help casino workers navigate the IRS easier (don't have time for details.) They SOOO believed in him, I could not believe how much they did. Well, make a long story short, he did NOTHING to help, just was out for votes like he always is, just I think Nevadan's finally are waking up. He is a lifelong politician way out of touch with reality. As a lifelong Nevadan, I beg to differ with you. We don't need to pioneer energy right now, we just want to pay our bills...his pandering to illegal aliens is shameless and inexcusible with ten percent unemployment across the country... got to go.

Chris wrote on June 04, 2009 06:29 PM: Sure. Lets compare this list to the hidden bribe and kickback list.

Mark wrote on June 04, 2009 06:01 PM: OK, Newbies you sound like a bunch of whiners anyway! I doubt any of you remember 20 hr. work days 7 days a week or anything like loyality, commitment and perserverence. Mr Reid has done this year after year to gain the position he is in and has always put Nevada first. He is securing our future in business and techonolgy that will surpass anything in these United States and give you all a working opportunity. Did you forget that's why you came? Don't dare bit the hand that can promise a successful future. If you can't stand the "FIRE" why don't you go back to the "POT" you jumped out of and whine there. You are in the "Land Of The Good Ol'e Boys" and we step up to the plate in times like these to make up for all you want-to be's. Times are bad for everyone so what have you done to help? We're usally the last hit by the economy but the first out! For those of you not from here you need to learn more about Mr. Reid before you start to condem your own future. For those of you that are from NEVADA and think this way - I think you need to leave and go cry in some other state. Mr. Reid is in the process of solidifing the future of this state in the technology, science, information and construction industries that will outlive my grandchildren and perhaps make Nevada a worldwide source for a healthier future. If you should doubt my insights try taking a look at your own and YOUR commitment to one of the greatest states in the UNITED STATES!

Joe C wrote on June 04, 2009 01:52 PM: Reid can have all the so-called A list or supporters of illegal aliens and exploitation in the Republican Party he wants.
They will make up a tiny fraction of votes for a traitor like Reid. Fortunately the majority of Nevadans could care less about who Wayne Newton and Rogich support.

Reid will be out on the curb and not fast enough. For the politicians, we will remember what and whom you supported and you could be next.
