JANE ANN MORRISON: Rory Reid gets serious early in 2010 race for governor

One sign Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid is in it to win it: He's had a campaign manager on the payroll since early May, which is pretty early for a gubernatorial election in November 2010.

"That's telling you you have too much money in your campaign account," one Republican laughed.

  • Reid's likely Democratic primary opponent, Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley, hasn't hired a campaign manager. For her it's too early. "The legislative session ended just three weeks ago. Right now, I'm in the process of evaluating a potential run and meeting with supporters and consultants."

Notice she said "potential run." Buckley is giving herself some wiggle room to change her mind about running for governor against the son of U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

If she doesn't run, Rory Reid would be able to save some of the buckets of money he has raised and, instead of spending it in a primary, use it in a general election against the yet-to-be-chosen Republican.

Now does any of this sound familiar? A liberal Democratic woman challenges a more conservative Mormon Democratic man in a Democratic primary? She wins the primary and loses the general to a Republican seemingly loaded with baggage. Do the names Dina Titus, Jim Gibson and Jim Gibbons ring any bells? Can you remember 2006?

Some contend former Henderson Mayor Gibson was more Republican in his stances than Democratic, so the parallel doesn't exactly fit, and that a Reid-Buckley Democratic primary would be one where the two candidates are likely to be more in sync on a variety of issues.

Reid's new campaign manager, David Chase Cohen, said it's unlikely in a Reid-Buckley matchup that there would be much of the "I wouldn't have voted like he/she did." Instead of looking backward at voting records, he said it's more likely to shake down as a campaign looking forward at ideas.

Cohen, 32, originally from Massachusetts, was the campaign manager of Democrat Jill Derby in 2006 when she ran closer than expected against Republican Dean Heller in the Northern Nevada congressional district.

In 2008, Cohen was Nevada state director for Barack Obama during the Democratic caucus, initially putting him at odds with Reid, who was working for Hillary Clinton and joined the Obama campaign after she lost the nomination.

After the caucus, Cohen advanced to the national campaign. He was deputy national director of voter contact and then manager of general election direct mail in 16 battleground states.

Cohen said he doesn't know yet how the campaign will distinguish Reid from Buckley, but a candidate's accomplishments should be considered. The commission is a collaborative effort and it's hard to credit Reid exclusively, but I asked for three of Reid's accomplishments.

Since he hasn't been Reid's campaign manager very long, I can't be too critical when he named three but couldn't tell me Reid's exact role. But after checking with Reid, Cohen fleshed out three areas where Reid showed leadership and was involved from start to finish.

I'm probably previewing a direct mail piece, but Cohen credited the county commissioner in these three areas:

    • Reid headed a 25-member county task force early this year to ensure Southern Nevada got its fair share of federal stimulus funding.

    • Reid was personally involved in getting the parties together to help establish the public-private partnership between the University Medical Center, the Nevada Cancer Institute and Kirk Kerkorian's Lincy Foundation to reinstitute outpatient cancer treatments at UMC.

    • Reid spearheaded reforming county ethics laws by reconvening the county's Ethics Task Force. The commission adopted a package of ethics rules prohibiting former county commissioners from lobbying their former colleagues for a year after leaving office, limiting the value of gifts county commissioners could accept, and requiring formal reporting of conflict-of-interest disclosures by commissioners and county employees.

Early polling indicates Cohen may need to work less on distinguishing Rory Reid from Barbara Buckley and more on distinguishing Rory Reid from Harry Reid because the son's negatives are higher than expected, with 25 percent viewing him unfavorably in the Review-Journal's May poll. Only 9 percent viewed Buckley unfavorably while 50 percent viewed Harry Reid unfavorably.

If Nevadans really are confusing the two Reids, and the dad's negatives are spilling over to his son, Rory Reid and David Chase Cohen really aren't starting to campaign too soon.

Rory Reid is going to be the typical Democratic politician who comes in promising some type of 'change' and describes this change without telling you that it will lead to a massively bloated government, higher taxes (possibly an income tax!), and schools that will continue to segregate and underperform.

While Governor Gibbons has not been the best governor he has held the line on instituting an income tax and he has kept most other taxes low allowing us in Nevada to benefit from high taxes and fees driving out businesses from California, New York, Colorado, etc. into Nevada.

I think it is important for us Nevadans to take a look at our options more closely than we did in 2008 when we chose Barack Obama as president of the United States. I think we have to look at our longterm goals and our future and decide who is the best candidate to get us there, and the likely candidate will be the Republican nominee.

I honestly don't know much of Rory Reid outside of him being Harry Reid's son.

So I'm simply going look beyond a person's father as being a negative or a positive and do the research and see where he stands on policy issues of personal importance to me and Rory Reid's own personal record and base my vote on that. I hope my fellow Nevadans do the same.

OF COURSE they are! We have one-party rule: the left wing democrats and the ULTRA left wing democrats.

You're wrong about Jim Fibbons. His own budget proposal included an increase in the sales tax and the room tax. Even so, that GOP rallying cry about "No new taxes" is just another way of saying "[More] old taxes GOOD!" I'll trade you the new (extra) taxes for the old ones any day.

Ron Paul, Don Gustavson and Sharron Angle talk small government. More importantly, they often *vote* that way as well. I'm so sick of Republicans who talk small government and vote BIG. Better to have someone like Rory, who we can expect to campaign honestly on a bona fide Democrat platform of higher taxes, higher spending, than a RINO.

I do not see any Republicans voting to close down UMC, because it offers free health care to the poor. I do not see any Republican who is against public education, because it is promoting more big government. In fact, Republicans from Reagan to Bush II campaign on a platform of limiting the size of government, and always seem to expand it exponentially by the time they leave. It is simply saying one thing on the campaign trail, and doing something else, once one is elected.

At least Governor Gibbons deserves credit for practicing what he preached about "no, new taxes" and giving a veto over 40 times.

As for supporting left wing politicians, as much as I cannot stand Hillary Clinton, mostly, because I do not consider her honest or humble, I don't see her as a left winger. I supported Ron Paul, but I hope people don't just judge me by one of the many choices I have made in my life.

Addressing the Ensign/Washington Post article, what makes you think that Sig Rogich controls the RJ? I think Sig has his invisible hand in a lot of places, but even he would admit he does not tell the newspaper what to publish. I think that Sherm Frederick and Tom Mitchell are laughing at that suggestion.

As for Rory, I saw a neighbor being unfairly slandered and felt it my duty to set the record straight. He knows I have never supported him in his past political campaigns, but I believe he has the independence and integrity, compared to the other politicians in Nevada, to make an outstanding choice for Governor. I look forward to supporting him.

Too_many_Reids wrote on June 29, 2009 08:45 PM: Silly me. How could anyone get the idea that Rory is a socialist? Just because Rory is a BIG supporter of free UMC ER visits (AKA unconstitutional public healthcare) doesn't mean Rory is a socialist. Just because he is a big supporter of unconstitutional welfare programs doesn't mean that he is a socialist. That fact that he is a prominent supporter of public education doesn't make him a socialist, or that he supports left-wing Democrat candidates at all levels. No, no, no. A socialist is someone who supports big government.

And please don't embrace the myth that government spending promotes economic recovery. In fact, it only promotes BIG government.

Don Chairez wrote on June 29, 2009 07:38 PM: Derek and Mike:

For years the Democrats have openly embraced Keynesian economics where they believe that the best way to stimulate the economy is with massive government spending. FDR and Hitler were both influenced by Keynes, and one was a leftist and of course Hitler was a fascist. Government spending helped both countries get out of the Depression of the 1930's.

Unfortunately, the Republicans who "preach free markets" want no such thing. They are hypocrites and want "rigged" markets with their friends in power who will make them rich by giving them government contracts. As my libertarian friends would say: this is corporate welfare. Isn't that what the Wall Street Bailout was?

The fact that Reid comes from a Dynasty allows him an advantage over the other politicians who sell their souls to get one-tenth the name recognition.

To me, it is unbelievable how Americans have allowed the campaign consultants to hijack democracy, but it goes to a point I made earlier: most voters are too lazy to become informed about any of the candidates.

As for Ross Miller, I think he has done a great job of modernizing the SOS's office with technology, and I believe if we have learned any lessons from Iran this past month, technology based upon American ingenuity like Facebook, Twitter and cell phones can even bring down the Iranian mullahs.

As for Rory, if he is making money getting rich off the taxpayers, he sure is not spending it on himself or his family. Welcome to the big leagues Rory, where a lifetime of virtue gets destroyed with a few lines of slander in a 30 second hit piece?

Rory, when did you become a socialist?

    Mike, who are you?

Bravo! By the way, Ross Miller is a miserable political hack. He is completely worthless, like the other clowns who preceded him.

Don, you're confused. Judges need to be honest and objective. It would help if they could comprehend the simple English the Consitution is written in. Politicians do dirty work. We shouldn't expect much from them, except maybe that they don't steal the bathroom fixtures. I'll take a small government guy of *any* sort over an honest Socialist every time.
