A 25-year-old man wanted in a slaying and a robbery in California was arrested Thursday in Las Vegas by a fugitive task force and Las Vegas police, the U.S. Marshals of Nevada said.

The Marshals said Carl Arline, 25, was arrested during a foot pursuit near Pecos Road and Gowan Avenue. Arline is a reputed gang member wanted since 2006 by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Marshals said.

Arline was arrested by members of the Fugitive Investigative Strike Team.

Man dies of injuries from Sunday crash

An Australian man who was a passenger in a car hit by a pickup truck on Sunday died Thursday.

Las Vegas police said the man, identified as 52-year-old Peter Bowen of New South Wales, Australia, had been taken to University Medical Center in critical condition after the accident.

He was in a Pontiac Sunfire headed south on Procyon Street at Spring Mountain Road, near Valley View Boulevard. The car stopped at a stop sign and then pulled out in front of a Chevrolet S-10 that was eastbound on Spring Mountain, police said. The truck did not have a stop sign.

At 6:30 a.m., the truck hit the passenger's side of the Sunfire. The driver of the Sunfire, 23-year-old Ekaterina Norland of Las Vegas, was also taken to UMC. She suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, 37-year-old Christopher Hiltsley, was not injured.

'TEA Party' rally set today in Las Vegas

Conservatives angry about taxes and government spending are planning a reprise of April's "TEA Party" protests for Independence Day, including a rally in Las Vegas today.

Today's event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Desert Breeze Park, 8275 Spring Mountain Road.

The "Taxed Enough Already" events held across the country on April 15 drew large crowds of grass-roots activists, including more than 1,000 in Las Vegas, on the due date for federal income tax returns. Protesters waved tea bags in a symbolic gesture intended to recall the Boston Tea Party.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Joe Heck, a former state senator, is among those scheduled to speak at today's protest, according to his campaign.

Holiday events evoke air quality advisory

An air quality advisory has been issued for the Fourth of July weekend due to smoke from local fireworks and outdoor barbecues, a Clark County Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management release stated.

Unhealthy levels of air pollution are not occurring at this time. Air quality officials will continue to monitor the situation.

Cyclist killed in DUI accident identified

The Clark County coroner's office identified the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a Chevrolet Suburban Monday near Desert Inn and Sandhill Roads as 43-year-old Gary John Lommason.

The Las Vegan died of multiple injuries sustained in the accident, according to the coroner's findings.

Police spokesman Ramon Denby said Monday the bicyclist became entangled with the Suburban's undercarriage during the 3:15 p.m. accident.

The driver of the Suburban, 50-year-old Charlie Matanza of Las Vegas, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence, police said.

Matanza was westbound on Desert Inn near Sandhill when his vehicle went up on the north sidewalk and struck Lommason.

Lommason was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Rock falls cut the glow of Kilauea volcano

The bright glow at the summit of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has been snuffed out by a series of large rock falls within its crater.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says the rock falls on Tuesday produced a seismic signal equivalent to a magnitude-2.4 earthquake.

The rumble was felt at the observatory and the adjacent Jaggar Museum.

Chunks of the vent rim fell into the cavity in the floor of the crater. In all, more than 30 rim collapses were recorded.

Vent collapses are often the result of a drop in the level of lava in the vent, which destabilize its walls.
