Vandals deface iconic 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign

Mayor recommends: 'Off with their heads'

The famous diamond-shaped "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada" sign received an unwelcome addition this weekend -- a series of initials scribbled with a red marker.

It was the first act of graffiti on the sign that Russell Davis, a spokesman for Clark County public works, can remember.

  • "It looks like someone got on someone's shoulders (to do it)," he said. "It's unfortunate, because it's not the iconic Las Vegas sign when it's covered with graffiti."

A cleaning crew will be dispatched today to clean up the sign, Davis said.

The sign was designed by Betty Willis in 1959.

In December, a $400,000 project to add parking spaces and a paved walkway on the traffic median holding the sign was finished.

The improvements made accessing the sign easier for tourists -- and, apparently, for vandals, Davis said.

"Probably just some kids," he said.

The sign, at the south end of the Strip, is not actually in the city of Las Vegas, but Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman -- who famously championed corporal punishment when graffiti showed up on a tortoise sculpture underneath the Spaghetti Bowl interchange -- took offense anyway.

"When they graffitied my tortoise, I said, 'Off with their thumbs!'" the mayor said through a spokesperson. "This deserves, 'Off with their heads!'"

Anyone with information on the graffiti is asked to call 455-4509.

Or "Yard Sale" sign postings on City Traffic Poles, or Street Light Poles, or Traffic Cabinets, or Private Property Fences. Yard Sale signs would be easy to fine the persons putting up signs or posters(they never remove them after the event, since most Yard Sales are at the same addresses EVERY WEEK.) Many addresses are already on the Yard Sale signs, but nobody tracks them down and fines the Illegal Yard Sales. They do not have permits to have repeated Yard Sales. That makes them Businesses, that pay no taxes. And the Signs posting the Yard Sales, are a form of Graffiti. The City is the enabler for doing nothing to stop this defacing of City Property. Absolutely Nothing. Same goes for Graffiti Vandals. They always target the same spots, yet they NEVER get caught. Instead, the City Organizes an advertising program to offer a reward for informing on taggers. Sure. Turn in a tagger. His Lawyer gets YOUR address, and the taggers buddies kill your dog, deface your property, or burn you out. The City of Las Vegas City Council, is cowardly Politically Correct, in not addressing the problem as a Minority Crime, usually in the Low Income Homes, and Apartments areas of town. Hire a private contractor to "Stake-Out " repeat tag areas with cameras. Just wait it out, and the creeps will re-tag the SAME areas and items. There is NO excuse for the City Council to NOT seriously address this problem, except that they don't want to lose Minority Votes. So, they turn a blind eye, and PRETEND to be concerned. Meanwhile, the problem gets worse, and the creeps defy authorities by getting bolder and bolder. Mayor, shame on you.

quack pipe wrote on July 14, 2009 03:55 PM: Dave--you say that no one repsects this town. Well, what do you expect when we dont respect ourselves?

This town promotes SIN. It promotes gambling, prostitution, infidelity, alcoholism.
Crime is high, unemployment is above the national average, gas prices are above the national average, we lead the nation in foreclosures, our mayor promotes drinking and now we are opening a museum dedicated to 'the mob.'

Does thjis town deserve any respect? Personally, I think we should be thankful no one has taken a wizz on the sign

Dave wrote on July 14, 2009 02:44 PM: I was at the sign Sunday evening and the whole area made me mad. First the sign was defaced, then you look around and see beer bottles and cigarette butts everywhere. What a waste of 400 grand. No one respects this town. The place was trashed. I say charge people for parking there and charge them for taking a picture in front of the sign to help pay the cost of cleaning the area.

Vegas is a SEWER DUMP of a city.

They should chop that sign down.

Virga wrote on July 14, 2009 01:03 PM: I think graffiti on that sign is appropriate. It goes with the decor of the rest of the town.

Ken wrote on July 14, 2009 12:33 PM: With all the traffic cams in town I am a bit surprised that they wouldn't have thrown a couple of cameras in that area when they refurbished it.
