Trial in teen drinking allegations delayed

A prominent Las Vegas doctor charged with hosting an underage drinking party for his teenage son and friends had his trial postponed until November.

Dr. Rudy Manthei had been scheduled to face trial Monday on two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. His new trial date is Nov. 9.

  • Manthei, an ophthalmologist who was chairman of Gov. Jim Gibbons' health care transition team, was cited May 24 after Henderson police were called to a loud party at his home, according to a police report.

Officer C. Collier arrived and found about 20 teens, some who seemed close to a fight, in the driveway. Some ran into the house, but a few stayed back and told police they were drinking under adult supervision, the report said.

Manthei, who appeared intoxicated, told Collier he was hosting the party and underage drinking was taking place. He also said he had hired two security guards to supervise the teens, the report said.

He told the officer that the 10 teens inside were spending the night and not allowed to drive home, the report said.

Collier gave Manthei a warning and left. Later, the officer stopped a car in the area with two 18-year-olds who said they were trying to get home after drinking at Manthei's house, the report said.

Both took alcohol breath tests that showed the driver had a 0.022 percent blood-alcohol level and the passenger had a 0.121 percent blood-alcohol level, according to the report. They were cited as minors consuming alcohol.

Collier then cited Manthei because he allowed the teens to leave after drinking alcohol, the report said

Manthei could not be reached for comment Monday.

He is the founder of Nevada Eye & Ear and principal owner of Seven Hills Surgery Center. Manthei considered buying two of three clinics owned by Dr. Dipak Desai, whose gastroenterology practice is at the center of last year's hepatitis outbreak. Manthei is no longer interested in buying the clinics.

If every other 18 year-old young man jumped off of the Dam, would you follow?

Lead by example young man and you may live long enough to reach legal drinking age.

As for Dr. Manthei, shame on you. You know better. This is embarassing behavior for a man of your age and community stature.

I like to parent my own kids Manthei wrote on September 02, 2009 12:19 PM: How does he rate making the decision for other parents to allow their children to drink? Just because he's ok with the idea that his teenage son is getting wasted doesn't mean other parents are. The only kid he's responsible for parenting is his own. He doesn't have the right to make that decision for other parents. Pretty lofty of him to take that decision away by allowing them to do so on his watch. Sure hope they make an example of him.

Every 18 year old driver killed in NV in 2007 was drunk? That doesn't seem likely at all.
All of them dying in an "alcohol related" (not the same as drunk driving) crash would still be highly unlikely.

18 year olds are adults and its high time our society treated them as such. Holding others responsible for their actions only ensures that the problems continue.

Henderson Parent wrote on September 02, 2009 09:09 AM: I guess the rules and laws don't apply to Dr. Manthei. Is this guy arrogant or what?? Those teens were damn lucky those officers stopped them in that car as they could very easily been another headline of a more tragic sort. I think some parents think it's good parenting to let their teens drink as long as they're there to supervise, but they're still sending them the wrong message and contributing the their delinqency. Manthei should do jail time for what he did. If the judge who hears this case lets Manthei off the hook, then it's time for a new judge! Boy, if I need eye surgery, I'm staying as far away from this guy and his practice as I possibly can.

All had been drinking...

I do not fault the teens! The fault lies squarly on the head of the idiot Manthi. and how is it possible the officer let him go the first time? Wake up folks, teens are looking to us for direction, dismissing it as 18 year old "boys being boys" is how kids get killed.

In 2007 in Nevada every 18 year old driver killed in a car crash was drunk... obviously Delray's kid wasn't one of them.
