Horse removal goes on

Panel refuses to order BLM to halt plans

RENO -- A federal panel has rejected a request for a stay of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's plans to remove all wild horses from a large swath of eastern Nevada.

Horse defender Christine Jubic of Albany, N.Y., last month filed a petition for an order to halt the roundup with the Interior Board of Land Appeals until it could consider her appeal challenging the roundup.

The BLM last month started removing 350 horses southwest of Ely and plans to begin removing 270 more in October near Caliente.

The roundups affect all wild horses in an area around Ely covering 1.4 million acres.

BLM officials said the horses are being removed because studies found insufficient forage and water to maintain healthy wild horses and rangelands.

The BLM is paying some yahoo $6000.00 a day to round up horses that aren't bothering anyone. There's your tax dollars moron......

R Reeves wrote on September 08, 2009 03:00 PM: This removal goes completely against the 1971 Wild Horse & Burro Act. Furthermore, Nevada doesn't have that many Mustangs left. 350 is just about Nevada has anymore. It's disgraceful, and millions of taxpayer dollars are going towards breaking the law.

As far as horses not being "native" - fossils tell us otherwise. Horses and the ancestors of horses lived in North America for thousands of years. But I guess it's only native if it was around when the Europeans showed up to take over...

Fair and Balanced Fred wrote on September 07, 2009 02:48 AM: Shoot the non-native, feral, horse people, who want us to pay for their hobby, in the head.

    Problem solved.

We are fighting two wars and these idiots are focused on feral horses that threaten our big horn sheep.

These idiots are the enemies of Navada.

N Deeve wrote on September 06, 2009 08:49 PM: The BLM was formed to manage public lands and instead they mismanage it. Just like the Ely roundup, they are also rounding up the Pryor Mountain horses in Montana.
They have hired a convicted felon to do the helicopter roundup. This is a man who illegally rounded up wild stallions and sold them directly to slaughter in the past.
For the BLM, it is all about protecting the cattle operations who hold grazing leases on taxpayer supported public land. That, and the mining companies who will destroy & pollute the land.
The Ely horses, the Pryor Range horses, and all wild mustangs & burros are not protected but persecuted by the BLM, the very agency that is supposed to assure their safety.
Anyone who believes that the BLM is removing horses, or any animals, for their own good is naive and misinformed.

They are sustained through artificial means - namely our tax dollars to care for them. The herds are monitored, supplied food when necessary and treated medically when needed. They're invasive, much like the non-native quagga mussels invading Lake Mead. They're damaging and don't belong.

P.S. Humans aren't animals. I agree to an extent about man, but, we can take steps to mitigate our impact. Animals can't, so man must. We may not be taking enough steps, but we're moving in the right direction.

BJ wrote on September 06, 2009 11:19 AM: Tom,
Based on your comment, you should get out, as well as all humans living in Las Vegas because they are not indigenous species and are ruining the environment. There are not enough natural resources left, especially water, to sustain all the humans cramming into Las Vegas, so maybe we should start culling people as well.

Tom, Burbank wrote on September 06, 2009 10:16 AM: Good. Get them out. They're non-indigenous species and have been destroying the environment of the natural inhabitants.
