'COLD, CALCULATED' ATTACK: Two men arrested in Luxor bombing

Man killed in parking garage caught up in love triangle

Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio was a young man trying to make it in America. Problem was, he was making it with the wrong man's ex-girlfriend.

Four days after the 24-year-old died in a bomb blast at the Luxor parking garage, Las Vegas police pinned the slaying on two men, including the former boyfriend of Antonio's girlfriend. Detectives believe Antonio was targeted because of his relationship.

  • "This was a very cold, calculated, planned attack," homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said at a news conference Friday announcing the arrests of Omar Rueda-Denvers and Porfirro Duarte Herrera.

Rueda-Denvers, 32, had been fighting with his ex-girlfriend over visiting their child, and he was kicked off Luxor property two months ago because of ongoing harassment, police said. Detectives booked him on charges of murder, attempted murder and possessing an explosive device.

Herrera was booked on a charge of being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm, but police expected to charge him in connection with the bombing late Friday. Police believe Herrera, also known as Pilo, accompanied Rueda-Denvers to plant the bomb.

Rueda-Denvers, a native of Panama, and Herrera, a Nicaraguan construction worker, are both illegal immigrants, police said.

Antonio's girlfriend, whose name was withheld by police, worked with him at Nathan's Famous hot dog restaurant in the Luxor food court. She is in the country illegally and has been in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, pending deportation to Guatemala.

Antonio, who entered the United States from Mexico illegally about three years ago, worked at Nathan's at Luxor and the Quizno's sandwich shop at Excalibur to send money home to support another girlfriend and their child, relatives said.

Antonio and his co-worker walked to the parking garage about 4 a.m. Monday after finishing their shifts at Nathan's when Antonio noticed an object on the roof of his 1996 Dodge Stratus. When he picked it up, it exploded.

He died shortly after arriving at University Medical Center. The woman was standing about 4 feet away but was unhurt in the blast. Investigators don't believe she knew about the attack.

Homicide detectives cracked the case Thursday after identifying a mystery car, caught on security cameras parking briefly next to Antonio's car 90 minutes before the explosion.

Officers pulled over the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt about 4 p.m. near Eastern Avenue and Russell Road. One of Rueda-Denvers' former girlfriends was driving and told police he might have taken the car late Sunday without her permission, police said.

About three hours later, police stopped Rueda-Denvers as he drove his green Mazda pickup truck along Pebble Road near Bermuda Road. Detectives questioned him and later found evidence, including bomb-making materials, during a search of his home, police said.

Police and agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also searched a maintenance shed at the Sedona on the Boulevard condominium complex at Pebble Road and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Rueda-Denvers worked at the complex, Roberts said.

Authorities devoted hundreds of investigators to the case, which is far from closed, Roberts said.

"We still have a lot of work to do," he said. "Once an arrest is made, that's really when the case begins."

News of the arrests was welcomed by Antonio's family, said Miguel Dorantes, his brother. He praised police for their quick action and said he hopes justice will be served.

"I just want it to be over," he said in Spanish.

He said he knew little about Antonio's love life or the woman he was with the day he died.

"Who knows?" he said. "I've only been here with him (in Las Vegas) about six months."

He said his family is devastated and hopes to hold funeral services for him in Mexico sometime next week.

If you failed to enter the US through proper channels you are illegal and you have boke the law. You should be arrested for committing a felony.

If being illegal is a crime than everyone in america is gulity. Everyone in america came across the Atlantic or pacific ocean. The people who has lived here the longest has been Natiive Americans. We should stop this discrimination towards illegals and focus on the real problem YUCCA MOUNTAIN>}

While one writer commented that if INS raided casinos half the strip would be closed, that is in fact not true. The corporate casinos do security background checks, the leased operations like those in the article, seem to skip background checks as well as the documentation required by the IRS and INS. It is time to deal with this greater issue and crack down on the employers as well as stop hiring illegals.

Calvin wrote on May 12, 2007 01:09 PM: This unfortunate tragedy offers a glimpse into Nevada politics. The murder victim and his girlfriend were undocumented workers at businesses inside major Las Vegas casinos. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of workers in these situations. Generally, they work in low-paying jobs like housekeeping/food service in the gaming industry. They present easily-obtained forged documents to get their jobs. The employers pretend to make a good faith effort not hire undocumented workers. Why isn't anybody in the Legislature ranting and raving about that? The gaming industry routinely and knowingly exploits undocumented workers- and everybody knows it. Don't wanna show up for your night shift at Nathan's Hot Dogs? OK, maybe we'll happen to find out that your employment documents are forged. Why don't politicians stop worrying about the 0.5% of Millenium Scholarships going to undocumented Nevada high school grads and start asking the gaming industry why it's OK to use undocumented workers as slaves? We need an amnesty worker program for undocumeted Nevadans. We need Nevada politicians to stop using immigration to advance their own self-serving political ambitions.

As you slam Americans calling them closed minded, uncaring, on welfare. I’ve seen Americans working harder, longer, and for less money and benefits, add living costs and college costs skyrocket.
Wages in jobs you say we won’t do have plummeted displacing Americans, construction, manufacturing, service industry. Jobs for years done by a diversified citizenship and legal immigrant, now mostly done by Spanish speaking illegals, who really don’t seem to care what their presence has done to us.
Since you are so caring about one murder, how many citizens are murdered each year by illegals?
We should be allowing much more dialogue with the issues of illegal immigration and not bullied by those acting so high and mighty that then spew untrue insults. It’s been a shameful effective tactic that should end. Sorry about the family’s loss.

kim wrote on May 12, 2007 10:10 AM: A human being was killed and all you people are concerned is whether he was legal or not. It is true that he wasn't but that isn't the point. HE WAS MURDER!! Have we lost site of that fact- or is it because you people want to complain about something. And not to mention that yes he was doing a job that most Americans wouldn't do- in fear of losing their welfare benefits- Shame on all of you who are close minded enough not to have any pity on the victim- Maybe that will give you something to think about while you are standing in line waiting for your benefits that You as Americans feel you are entitled to!!

Joe C wrote on May 12, 2007 09:55 AM: While there is more crime caused by illegal aliens, we can’t forget one of the biggest reasons for this invasion and who really are the bigger criminals.
Consider the billions spent by big business yearly lobbying for their agendas. Why did they not lobby billions twenty years ago for a bigger guest worker program anticipating worker shortages?
First, there would have to be stats with proof of worker shortages. A sensible legal guest worker program would mean laws protecting American workers wages, and safe working conditions. Plus more oversight to make sure union wages are not undercut; but once you destroy unions, and fair wages, safe working conditions using cheap illegal alien labor, you only have to lobby for a continual flow of cheap labor. All this with a government willing to turn blind eyes.
So lets not forget our biggest criminals and those who conspired to destroy our standard of life, and this includes Mexico.

While I do agree with many comments made about illegal immigration, particularly the comments of Mr O'Neill, lets not completely give up our humanity in the name of this cause. Yes the employer(s) mentioned should be investigated

John O'Neill wrote on May 12, 2007 09:12 AM: By the way: The ONLY reason UMC is in the red is the VAST numbers of illegal ailiens who seek treatment there and have thier anchor babies there.

    WAKE UP AMERICA
    Illegals cause murder
    mayhem
crime, overcrowding and take away jobs traditionally held by Americans.

They are not picking lettuce in Vegas; they ARE picking the best blue collar jobs and turning them into jobs that require you to speak spanish to even apply.
