  • The police search that followed forced the closure of nearby streets and lockdowns of seven schools.

Capt. Randy Montandon said the shooting followed a verbal altercation between the officer and the man, whose name wasn't known.

"The officer felt endangered and fired his weapon," Montandon said.

Police spokesman Bill Cassell said the incident occurred at 10:09 a.m.

Nobody was struck by the bullets, Cassell said.

The suspect was described as black, 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-5 and wearing a blue and orange shirt.

Police shut down several streets near the area of Torrey Pines Drive and Twain after shots were fired. All streets were shut down within the areas bounded by these four intersections: Redwood Street and Twain, Twain and Jones, Jones and Flamingo Road and Flamingo and Redwood.

Also, the Clark County School District locked down seven schools while police searched for the suspect.

Those included Decker, Dondero, Marion Earl, Jydstrup and Thiriot elementary schools, Wynn Middle School and Southwest Behavioral School.

School district spokesman Michael Rodriguez said kindergarten students at the elementary schools are being held at the school and will not be allowed to be picked up or released to their buses until the lockdowns are lifted.

Update: The lockdowns at the schools were lifted at 12:50 p.m.

i'd like to personally thank every law enforcement agency in the valley. when i see a squad car i feel relieved knowing they have my back out there.
it's simple folks. you don't run from the police. they are to be commended, not hated. i'm sure none of you "cop-haters" could ever do their job. and if you tried, you wouldn't last a day.
thanks again all you cops for not letting the animals run amok!

When are the citizens going to feel safe when being pulled over by metro officers? If they (the recruits) all needed to go to college, as a requirement to become an officer (at least 2 years). I believe would solve most of the problems we have between the police and the citizens.

Everyone cry for all the cops that can't drive and get killed when we waist thousands of dollars so they can go to L.V. speedway and screw off at the driving school up there. Can you picture there target practice sessions consist of anyone. They live by no rule. Then they set up bank accounts for the families. Do you have a clue what the city payes there family?? They literally set the family up. Our METRO dept. I think is one of the worst in the country. When they have no law to live by why should they care about the law. Hope I don't get shot for speeding.

    THE COP WAS WRONG!!!

But this is metro, they never ever have an unjustified shooting, it is not allowed...YOU CANNOT KILL PEOPLE FOR ARGUING OR RUNNING....

Jon wrote on November 20, 2009 01:47 PM: To Dave - i never once tried putting you down for your low intellect. But now since you refuse to believe facts regarding Eugenics and the history surrounding the movement i have to say you are a complete moron. i simply put a link to the wikipedia page as a starting point for some education. if you would like i can post links to university webpages or to the rockefeller foundation or some of the many other factual websites. The funny thing about people like you is that you refuse to believe the truth even if it's right in your face. Thats why the leaders of this country know they can walk all over the people because half the people are so blinded to the facts that the leaders know they can get away with just about anything. Answer this question for me... Why would our government spend 4X the amount of money investigating Bill Clinton getting a BJ than they did on the investigation of the 9/11 attacks??? That seems real strange to me. I would think the higher priority would be the 9/11 attacks not a BJ... Good job republicans, shows where your priorities are. So Dave, you are an imbecile and i really hope you dont have children because this planet cant afford any more stupid humans roaming around brainless.
