Nevada Democrats Shelley Berkley and Dina Titus supported the House health care reform bill while Republican Dean Heller opposed it.

Titus called the vote historic and hopes the Senate can follow the House and approve health legislation.

  • “Mainly I want the Senate just to move and take some action. We feel like we made history and we hate to see it languish on the other side.”

Berkley said although the bill isn’t perfect, it’s a “great first step.”

She said the bill “doesn’t contain a provision to protect bone density tests I fought for and doesn’t fix the Medicare physician payment system and we must fix both, but I do support this for the needed reforms that are included.”

Heller said: “Today America is less free. Granting massive government intrusion into individuals’ health care choices will ultimately lead to fewer choices for Americans.”

Heller offered three amendments earlier in the process related to citizenship verification, in favor of prescription drug reimportation and in favor of debt forgiveness for doctors who practice in poor communities. All three were rejected.

Berkley and Titus voted against the amendment which would bar federal funding for most abortions, which passed on a vote of 240-194. Democrats split 64-192 against the amendment, but 176 Republicans, including Heller, voted in favor of it. The alternative Republican health care plan was rejected on a vote of 176-258. Berkley and Titus opposed it; Heller supported it.

No one here is saying that the health care system isn't in need of serious change, BUT, a Public Option isn't the answer. Increased portability, tort reform(caps so doctors don't have to do 60 tests to cover their butts)AND the biggest thing that could be done is making all health insurance carriers hold a standard so they can sell insurance in all states. When I left Texas and moved back to Nevada, I had great insurance with a good company. I couldn't keep it when I moved. Although the company I worked for subsidized my premium (minimally)I had to go out and search for a new company! I was without insurance for 4 months just because it wasn't like my car insurance and I didn't own it! Now where I work, they own the policy and I'm covered under it. If I leave, I have to find new coverage! Do you see how making this similar to other insurance coverage would make it a very competetive market where price would go down and coverage would go up to compete? I am a veteran and I can tell you that anything the government has its hand in,IS NEVER BETTER and is run by beauracracy who has your tax money to spend and doesn't have to compete to remain viable. THAT's why so many are against the government getting their hands even more into our healthcare! (Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc)I want us all to be able to shop for our health insurance and own the policy, period! Then, you can choose what type coverage, deductibles, etc that you want and not have it dictated by the government. Those of us that don't support this bill DO SUPPORT change in the healthcare system. Just change that makes sense!

You really don't have a clue, do you?

Keep on arguing about Democrat vs. Republican. They've got you right where they want you.

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy wrote on November 08, 2009 01:33 AM: I hope they call it the 'Edward M. Kennedy Healthcare Act' or something similar. Teddy fought passionatly for 45 yrs. for Americans who had less and needed more. The poor people in this country are Kings compared to places Brazil and Mexico, thanks to Sen. Kennedy and his ilk. God Bless you Teddy and I know you're smiling down from heaven and dancing with the Lord right now. God Bless the Democrat Party. The true party of the working man.
The Republicants prove again, if you don't look like us and think like us (White, Rich, Conservative, Anglo Saxon, Protestant)you don't matter and we don't care about you!

Born in the USA wrote on November 08, 2009 01:24 AM: Hey, I don't have health insurance, with little hope of getting any anytime real soon. I barely have a job thanks to the Bush/Cheney train wreck they called their 'Administration'. Why can't the most advanced country in the world provide for their citizens basic needs. I'm healthy now, so far, but who knows about tomorrow. I can't afford to be or get sick. I used to make $16 an hr. I got laid off, I found something, so I wouldn't have to suck the dole. I probably would make the same on unemployment, but I'm not one to sit around and rape the government if I can work. I need affordable health insurance, get it, I HAVE NOTHING! I make $8 an hr. My employer does not offer insurance. Most of the negative comments here are probably from those of you who've been unaffected by this recession, and still have the same health coverage you've always had, or you're rich and don't need insurance. I'm not some welfare schlub who thinks the government owes me something, but affordable health insurance should be a right for every US citizen, even if you don't have a good job with GREAT insurance.

Excuse me are not both these programs broke and an example of government run programs, we all need our heads examined.

What about his pee-peeing away millions of my tax dollars on the rail system only to change his mind and flush it all down the toilet?

Ensign? He's in the same class as Dingy Harry, they are both carpetbaggers.

Are you a social worker? Can you whistle Dixie and Yankee Doodle at the same time?

LV Pol Girl wrote on November 08, 2009 12:13 AM: Actually, we have one corrupt Senator and that is John Ensign who should do us all a favor and resign. Senator Reid has a long history of fighting crime and corruption in this state. He is an ethical leader in the U.S. Senate who has one flaw, which is protecting the ethically challenged Ensign. The GOP have nothing on him except to make sick jokes about what this man and his family had to endure in fighting crime and corruption.

Proud to call Harry Reid my Senator.

Listen to you liberals. Women's rights, huh? Crushing baby's skulls? Helping the poor? The Clark County Social Services don't help the poor, neither does UMC. Nor will they ever. Get rich off the poor maybe, but the evils are self-serving demons.

We will just get more of the same big government workers with big pay and benefits.

Just wait a couple more years and China will be your voice.

In Satan we trust, don't we?

Wake Up Clown wrote on November 07, 2009 11:58 PM: "Senator Reid, carry us to history and make our state proud with your leadership."

    God help us all.

Can you honestly say with a straight face that Harry Reid shouldn't be in prison for the crimes he has committed?

    UNF******BELIEVABLE.
