Family members are organizing a mass search in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas for a 46-year-old man who was last seen more than a week ago.

Darrell Kirk said Friday the effort will begin at 8 a.m. today near where his brother Ronald Kirk's vehicle was found in the rugged Calico Basin area west of Las Vegas. The search will include volunteers, horses and dogs.

Ronald Kirk sent a text message Jan. 16 or Jan. 17 saying it was a warm day and he was going hiking in Las Vegas.

Family members reported him missing Sunday.

Police have said they don't suspect foul play.

    I agree with Mandatory Hiker Tracking Devices, and Hiking Insurance. These fools keep getting lost or hurt, and out go the choppers to look for them. Who pays for that? Not the knucklehead hiker.

    I'm not sure which ones you mean, unless you are talking about technical rock climbing, or not actual trails. I have gone off trail and hiked around close to the scenic loop, then back around that mountain (hill mostly) back to Calico Basin. I have seen some guys doing some technical stuff (with ropes back in there), but I'm not into that. I just prefer hiking and moderate rock scrambling. It's possible he fell and broke a leg (or worse), but there are quite a few people who hike in there. I have trouble believing he wouldn't be found by now.

    @Ralph,
    Not true. Calico Basin has many hiking trails that are rugged and off the beaten track.

    Umm, I think he took off out of state. Calico Basin isn't that rugged- there are houses there for crying out loud. It's a populated area. This isn't exactly wilderness.
