Timberlake rallies crowd in support of Obama

Justin Timberlake isn't one of those political celebrities, the oft-derided limousine liberals who seem to think an Oscar is a doctorate in public policy. He is, he says, just a guy who feels strongly about the upcoming election, as do so many others.

"I'm not here as some dude who writes goofy songs," the superstar pop singer said Saturday from the stage of the amphitheater at the Clark County Government Center.

  • "Me and Jess, we're here as Americans. We're here as humans because this is something we had to do," Timberlake said. "We've never publicly endorsed before. But we've never been so inspired by one person."

Timberlake and his girlfriend, actress Jessica Biel, stopped by the free public rally to urge support for Democrat Barack Obama, especially among the young voters that make up Timberlake's fan base but historically do not register or vote as much as other age groups.

It was cold and windy, and the outdoor venue was perhaps half-full with a few hundred mostly young people.

The former member of the boy band *NSYNC, who is 27 and registered to vote in Tennessee, didn't sing or dance, just talked spontaneously for about half an hour, helped by a printout of policy points and noting in a self-deprecating manner that he never went to college.

Timberlake was chatty and goofy, Biel more polished, but both were earnest as they pleaded with the group to help mobilize the youth vote.

Noting that the next president's Supreme Court appointments could determine the future of legal abortions, Biel said, "Nobody should be able to say what you can do with your body."

Timberlake joked, "I give Jess the right to choose where we go to eat all the time. The funny thing is, what the woman chooses is usually right."

"Brownie points for you," Biel teased him.

"I know where my bread is buttered," Timberlake responded.

Felice Garcia and Lindsey Jamieson, both 21-year-old University of Nevada, Las Vegas students, were thrilled to see two of their passions converge.

"We both believe in Obama and we both love Justin, so the two combined are a perfect mix," Jamieson said.

"We're both singers, so we really look up to him," Garcia added.

She said she was impressed that Timberlake, who is in town all week for a charity golf tournament, lent his time to a relatively low-key event.

"I really respect him for that," Garcia said. "He obviously cares about this."

Eligible voters who have not yet registered have until Tuesday to do so in person at the Government Center.

    Early voting begins Saturday.

Jen enjoys spending her time with her head in the sand. When our country turns into the USSA don't come crying to me. You asked for it....remember that.
