Harrah’s Entertainment cuts hundreds of jobs at Atlantic City properties

Harrah’s Entertainment has cut hundreds of jobs at three of its four Atlantic City properties due, partly, to the slowing economy.

Employment figures compiled by New Jersey regulators indicate hundreds of jobs have been cut at Bally’s Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City and Showboat Casino Hotel, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

  • The fourth, Harrah’s Atlantic City, added jobs due to a $550 million expansion completed this year that included a new hotel tower.

State records show Bally’s had 502 fewer workers in September compared with the same month last year, while Caesars was down 207 employees. The four properties had 16,034 workers in September.

The company said the market is being hurt by the economy, competition from neighboring states, and a casino smoking ban, which was recently lifted for a year.

The world’s largest casino operator by revenue has cut nearly 1,850 jobs and reduced hours at its eight Strip properties and its corporate offices in Las Vegas this year.

The company said in October, 21,849 full-time employees work locally at the Rio, Caesars Palace, Paris Las Vegas, Bally’s, Bill’s, Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Harrah’s.

That number does not include workers at the corporate offices in Las Vegas.

The problem with Harrah's is that the massive debt load coupled with really bad investments (can we say $800 million for The Rio was a wise move!?) leaves them in a position to where they can't afford economic swings. They have lost nearly half a billion in the first half of the year, and I suspect it will be even worse when they announce results next week.

Perhaps if they quit footing the bill for Gary boy to fly back and forth to Boston or the countless other 'executives' that refuse to live in Vegas yet bill the company for commuting back and forth to New York, etc., they would have a little more breathing room!

I love the fact that people are being forced to stop gambling (donating) at these "crooked games of chance" casinos.

I hope they all go empty!

These Casino will not accept any bettor who might win..... And because of that none of them deserve to stay in business in this country. Get all of them out of here and rip off another group of people some where else.

I am hoping this is America waking up to how retarded gambling with these thieves really is....

    I can only hope!

MGM/Mirage is run by scumbags and they laying off loyal, hard working people right in time for the holidays!

    Real nice.

Bobby wrote on October 31, 2008 04:43 PM: Then we should eliminate the leach stock holders that are doing nothing more than taking money away from the working people and giving it top them just because they have extra money.

These leach's (stock holders) are what's wrong with this freak money system that only destroys the working people!!!!

Paul wrote on October 31, 2008 03:53 PM: How come your not reporting the mass layoffs that took place last week at MGM Mirage due to the stupidity of their executives who couldn't run a bath?

Harrah's employee wrote on October 31, 2008 03:09 PM: It sucks for the workers that are being let go... but the property I work at was so overstaffed it was counterproductive and wasteful. This should have happened regardless of the economy.
