Sex offender arrested in task force sweep; police ask for parents' help

Authorities are requesting that parents ask their children if they might have been victims of a sex offender netted by a multi-agency child pornography task force today.

Las Vegas police Lt. Troy Barrett said they want to make sure there are no other victims of 42-year-old Michael G. Ward, who was arrested on three counts of statutory sexual seduction, one count of use of a minor in the production of pornography and 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

  • “Parents, if you know this person, talk to your children,” Barrett said.

Court records show Ward in 1998 pleaded guilty to assault and battery and lewdness with a child under 14 years of age. He was sentenced to a minimum of two years in prison.

Barrett said there were a “few” victims involved in Ward’s latest arrest.

He wouldn’t go into detail about those cases, or identify the neighborhoods where Ward or the alleged victims live. Nor did he provide the names of schools the alleged victims might attend.

But he said police didn’t believe Ward distributed the photos and home videos he took.

Ward was one of nine suspects nabbed in the last few days by a task force made up of officers from the Metropolitan and Henderson police departments and the FBI.

Police said there were no victims in the other cases.

    The other suspects are:

—Elbert Bernard, 59, was arrested on five counts of possession of child pornography.

—Daniel Combes, 46, was arrested on 15 counts of possession of child pornography.

—Anthony Flores, 32, was arrested on 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

—Hector A. Gonzalez, no age provided, was arrested on 10 counts of possession of child pornography after his employer noticed the information on his work computer, Barrett said.

—Thomas K. Krattenmaker, 22, was arrested on six counts of advertising or distributing child pornography and 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

—Paul Smith, 51, was arrested on 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

—Juan Vega, 37, was arrested on 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

—Terry K. Ziegler, 56, was arrested on 15 counts of possession of child pornography.

The fact that Michael is a convicted pervert on parole has no legs in this case. Don’t blame Michael for living near a high school. It is The State’s fault. His computer access is not his family’s fault; it’s the state of Nevada’s fault.
Let us not forget how O.J. Simpson was railroaded by public opinion. Most people had him written off as guilty, I was one of them. Ronald Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson had their necks sliced open and immediately people blamed O.J. Simpson.
O.J. was found not guilty and spent his years a free man looking for the murderers of his beloved Nicole.
Give Michael the benefit of the doubt. I believe that he stands a chance of proving his innocence. If he does, we all can learn from our jump to judgment.
Once a free man he can assemble a search party to track down who it is that framed him. It is logical to consider a burglar set up a network of computers in his home. It is possible that someone else disguised himself to look like Michael having sex with minors. It may be proven that the 3000 gigabytes of kiddy porn taken as evidence was altered with images of Michael spliced into the scenes.
The Girl who was present during the arrest was just a friend. There is a god chance that he was a gentleman probably sharing otter pops and talking about the Disney channel with his underage guest.
Give Michael a chance to prove that the State of Nevada is guilty as was previously pointed out.
When it is all said and done, he can write a book about this horrible mistake. I think he should name it,
If I Did Do It, Here’s How I Would Have Done It.

Angie wrote on November 28, 2008 09:21 AM: The status of this story is that the laws must be changed to ensure that possible repeat offenders not be given the opportunity to repeat. Mr Wards situation was blessed by the judicial system as they allowed him to continue owning and using a computer. If they had prevented him from owning or using a computer, he would not have worked in a place where computers are openly of access to him, nor would he have been able to own the network of computers at home that they consiquently found all the information on. If Michael Ward is found guilty, (I am still a believer of innocent until proven guilty), than he would be second time offender, and should be given the maximum, but if he is released to parole, it should stipulate no computers. As for JAYBIRD's comment of Michael Ward being the only one involving a minor, are you clueless as to what child porn is. Michael Ward was not the only one of th 9 arrest that involved a minor, All Child porn involves minors. DUH

jaybird wrote on November 26, 2008 05:23 PM: Micheal Ward was the only one of the 9 arrested producing child pornography involving a minor. Micheal Ward has multiple victims.
2 years ago, Micheal Ward’s live in girlfriend notified the police that she discovered child pornography on Micheal Wards computer.
At the time Police found a network of 4 computers in Micheal Wards house.

And so what wrote on November 25, 2008 09:39 PM: ...are we to ask our children? The police won't release anything except peripheral info. Why did he only serve two years - that seems like it might have been a minor (excuse the pun) situation. Most of these molestors are getting up to 25 years. Scare tactics help no one. Let's have some more info, eh?
