Mesquite casino to close temporarily

Mesquite operator Black Gaming will temporarily close the Oasis’ casino, restaurants and night clubs on Friday in a cost-cutting move for the financially struggling company.

The closing will cut the company’s work force by 500, according to a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

  • The Oasis’ 900-room hotel, RV park, neighboring golf course, gun club and time share facilities will remain open.

Majority owner and Chief Executive Officer Randy Black Sr., said Tuesday the company wants to drive customers to its other two properties: the 480-room CasaBlanca and the 710-room Virgin River.

“We’re all hopeful the economy comes back,” Black said. “Because, if it doesn’t, things are just going to get worse.”

While the filing’s language described the move as temporary, an accompanying statement signed by Black warned “the length and depth of the challenging gaming market” means “no assurances can be made about” of when the Oasis’ facilities would be reopened.

Black Gaming’s third-quarter revenues dropped 23.6 percent with the property showing a negative cash flow of $900,000.

Visitor volume to the town 80 miles north east of Las Vegas is down 6.6 percent through September, with occupancy rates down 5.5 percent, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Daily room rates for the city dropped 35.8 percent through September, and gaming revenues are down 9.9 percent, according to the visitors authority.

Mesquite Mayor Susan Holecheck said the loss of 500 jobs in a city of 20,000 surrounded by smaller communities is devastating anytime of year but especially at Christmastime.

“Laying off 500 people has a huge domino effect,” Holecheck said. “At Christmastime, if people are out of a job and not making money, then they are not able to go to the stores and restaurants. If people don’t have the money, they in turn aren’t helping our businesses.”

The Oasis will give the laid off workers a packet with information on applying for social services such as unemployment and food stamps, Black Gaming marketing manager Marty Rapson said Tuesday.

The workers will also be put on a list to be rehired when the property reopens, Rapson said.

Prior to the layoffs, CasaBlanca, Oasis and Virgin River ranked as the top three employers in Mesquite with a combined 2,278 workers, according to a city economic development report released in April.

The company will have approximately 1,500 workers following the layoffs, according to Monday’s federal filing.

The Oasis will keep a few slot machines open at the front counter to maintain the property’s nonrestricted gaming license.

The property begain shutting down the casino’s table games on Monday and will continue to phase out casino and restaurant operations this week.

The restaurants will close Friday after dinner, according to Black Gaming marketing manager Marty Rapson, but no time has been set.

The company’s ability to close portions of the Oasis was part of a Nov. 3 update to a bank agreement after it defaulted on a loan.

The current bank agreement expires Jan. 15, which means it would have to be updated if the Oasis’ facilities remain closed past that date.

Black said the company is in negotiations with the banks, but no decision as been made on what will be done in January.

Black Gaming is operating under $188.7 million in debt with interest rates near double digits.

Black is also getting hurt by his sole competition Ñ the 215-room Eureka hotel-casino which recently completed a $30 million expansion and renovation.

Black said earlier this year that “the other guy” controls 30 percent of the market. Majority owned by Las Vegas real estate developers the Lee Family, the Eureka added 300 new slot machines, expanded its buffet, and added a new poker room and new sports book. Just because a casino posts 99% return, it doesn't necessarily pertain to all machines. It may be 1 machine out of their entire stock. You are the one that is 100% wrong. I do work on the casino floor and I see and hear firsthand from our customers about the tight machines and I personally read an article in the las Vegas Review that stated 'although gaming machines increased by a mere few percentage points, profits were up substantially. I do not remember the exact figures as the article was from a few months back but it was in black and white. The new machines ARE tighter. Yes, the casinos do have to report hold percentages but that doesn't mean the casinos can't do it.

For your information, when one enters a casino, the players main objective is to win as much as they can with as little investment possible. Although I do not suggest one play keno for any great duration, I do suggest 3 games @ $1.00 per game. Yes the odds are for the house. 28% versus your stated 40%. Once again your ignorance shows) But a possible $50,000 win for a $1.00 investment is worth the risk.

But since you are 100% wrong in your analysis, you better rethink that idea or you will be out collecting welfare...

I am not a Casino Exec nor do I work for a casino. I just happen to do some really good research into the subject.

Rather than listening to the gripes of losers who will do anything to justify why they lost... (it must be Ticket machines, can't be my betting or the fact that it is GAMBLING)...

Yes... 99% payback... you should look for them sometimes...

The mix of paybacks on the floor have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the payback technology whether they are Ticket or not... if a property chooses to tighten or "loosen" its games, it has nothing to do with the ticket you blathering fool (and you claim I have no clue... brilliant).

If a casino tightens their games, that is their choice and they must be registered with the State as such... there are limits to the tightening as well... so if you want to be ignorant and blame the tickets... go right ahead... true gamblers know the truth... hacks like you just want to make excuses...

Get back to your 40% at keno...

When all you hear from players on the floor is they don't get any play anymore from the new machines and by the casinos own admission, slots is returning more profit from less new machines than before. Put 2 and 2 together. The new machines are making more profits because they are programmed to be tighter. 99% payback? From what planet did you come? Better yet, take a walk on the casino floor and listen to your customers instead of locking yourself in your ivory tower and counting all the money your employees made for the casino.

Their rooms were so small, I felt like I was on a cruise ship..!!..I lived in LV ten years & took my wife there once & she wanted out as soon as we got there. I feel bad for the employees, as I do in my dept. in LV @ Paris. 24 offed last week out of 50. What makes me mad is why not after the holidays?? The Casino's are now run by the Corp. bean-counters. It was better run by the wise-guys.I heard Station told people it's lay-off situation but will wait until January..Elvis has left the building...but he will be back soon...Happy New Year Nevada..Johnny

I could tell when machines were paying out... I didn't have to follow a stupid sign on the display to tell me how much money I had...

Hey KenoDave --- there are many ticket machines in Nevada that payout over 99%... and there are old slot machines that pay out less than 92%...

A fool and his money are soon parted... that's right... Play Keno instead... where the house keeps at least 40%...

Good luck, Randy... hopefully you will weather this storm... when you come out of it, you might want to focus on differentiating your product in the three resorts... right now, you are cannibalizing yourself... that's why Eureka is beating you.

Most businesses that are loyal to their customers, especially their employees, will survive even in hard times.

Seeing that the Oasis is not surviving, it may just be better for the employees to find jobs with a better employer. Sucks to happen now...but apparently the writing has been on the dirty walls for a while.

kenodave wrote on December 02, 2008 05:33 PM: Casinocon, I can tell you exactly why the 'other guy' is doing better. The Eureka still has some of the old slot machines and Black's casinos have none. I still contend that the new ticket-in ticket-out machines are a ripoff and that was the beginning of the end for slot players. You don't get any play from the new machines and I refuse to donate to those thieves. Bring back the old machines or start locking the doors because the gaming public is tired of beng ripped off.
