Fassel to coach new Las Vegas pro football team

Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel will be the coach of Las Vegas' entry into the United Football League, a source confirmed on Tuesday.

The UFL is an upstart league that is expected to begin play in the fall. The Las Vegas team will play at Sam Boyd Stadium.

  • Fassel went 60-56-1 while coaching the Giants from 1997 to 2003. He took New York to the Super Bowl following the 2000 season, where it lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue would "not confirm or deny" Fassel's hiring, but said there would upcoming announcements regarding the league.

Such announcements probably would cover the number of teams, which cities will be involved, who the coaches will be and how many games will be played.

Gary Linger wrote on May 03, 2009 11:40 PM: This sounds great but with three possible leagues competing with each other and trying to be viable I believe at least two leagues should come together and work with the NFL for the best possible product that can be put on the football field. I would like to see the UFL and the USFL work with one another and build a strong enough base for survival of both.

If playing in spring or fall is a problem than do something as simple as a coin flip to determine when game play should take place. Personally I would love to have a legit football season in the spring. The wait between the end of the NFL season and it's return are hard to bare. Baseball and basketball are not enough. Anyhow this is just my thoughts on it. The USFL was short lived but quite original and fun. If people without huge egos don't get involved it can slowly grow into a strong league that furnishes the NFL with players who get better under game conditions. The talent would only be a slight bit less than the NFL. I hope this league will at least get in touch with those thinking of resurrecting the USFL. Great minds coming together could really benefit both organizations.

Believe me if people come to this town wanting somethin' bad enough, they know where to go get it....been that way forever...

I may actually go to a game for this 'pro' team just to see Fassel. But I dont expect much.

This is the first I've heard of this. Whats the name of the team? Wheres the schedule? Who are the players? Horrible advertising.

I mean seriously, who would waste their money on a new football league? The Arena League is half owned by ESPN and even they took a year off for lack of interest.
