Union members reject COLA freeze proposal in North Las Vegas

The city of North Las Vegas’ largest employee union has rejected a proposal to forgo 4 percent cost-of-living salary increases for a year to save the financially strapped city about $4.4 million.

Teamsters Local 14, which represents 780 city employees in a variety of jobs ranging from secretaries to managers, voted overwhelmingly against the proposal Monday night, Dana Phillips, business agent for the union, said today.

  • The city would not guarantee there would be no layoffs if the union agreed to contract concessions, Phillips said.

“What’s the incentive for giving concessions?” she said.

The city's firefighters union voted late last week to defer its cost-of-living increase for a year, among other concessions, which the city said will save about $1.5 million. The city is still in negotiations with its police union.

The city, which has trimmed about $16 million from its 2008-09 budget, initiated the union talks in late February as a way to save money in the face of declining tax revenue caused by the economic slowdown.

Wake Up wrote on April 08, 2009 07:14 AM: Wake up people! There is a hiring freeze - this means that if people are laid-off, there will NOT be any replacements... union memeber or not. So I don't get all the comments about replacing employees with non-union members????

The guy a few posts below sounds like a disgruntled engineer who didn't make his captains exam. He wants to complain about all the political garbage of CCFD, only a fireman would make a dumb statement like "The Paramedic lies to make higher paycheck amounts" The people of AMR (both companies) should be the ones complaining about low pay and dealing with incompetent paragods from CCFD. LVFR has their share of problems too like NLVFD, at least most of their paramedics are COMPETENT and WILLING to TRANSPORT if someone is bleeding out. you should aspire to be like Don Earl from station 3.

this town owes union local 1908 every cent it has wrote on April 07, 2009 09:05 PM:
no one is more valuable or more important than a dues paying member of paramedic union local 1908, and don't you ever forget it.

if you want to see paramedics tired of doing the work they are overpaid for and are not doing, ask yourself why rescue 31 was moved out to station 23 ,violating the sunrise manor bond issue,so harold wyatt could avoid running medical calls, station 23 remained so busy, harold wyatt hated it, and decided to relocate the fema heavy rescue station over to station 21, which cost 3 employees their captains badges which dave leedham barbra nygard and mark stephenson were passed over for. paramdeic chief steve hanson lied and said station 27 was without a certificate of occupancy, yet more than 1 fire station currently functions under a temporary occupancy permit, but the excuse was used to deny the promotions to these 3 employees.for nefarious purposes within the paramedic division.,paramedic union official ed beaman promised to build a union hall, bought land with union dues, had it subdivided /rezoned /sold half/ family pocketed the profits, and then decided to accept an old building on charleston as the new union hall, for political favors.never completing the new hall as promised.the county owes david ,barbra and mark a great deal of back pay.

the phony cry that firefighters see anything more than a samaritan sees
at a car accident, fire,or drowning is a big fat joke.

the paramedic lies to make higher paycheck amounts .
    ..........it is the bottom line

no more unions wrote on April 07, 2009 08:32 PM: If the union here cannot make the neeeded concessions then they should terminate their CBA and hire some of the people that are on unemployment that are very qualified and are willing to do anything to work and will gladly do it for the price the local 14 won't do it for. Hard times mean you have to do whatever it takes to make things happen and if you aren't willing to be flexible in a tough economy there is always someone who is right behind you that is. Unions are outdated and not needed in a day and time where there are other measures to make sure people are taken care of and treated properly. They do more damage than good in most cases. Look what they have done to the car industry in the US. Just saying......

Oscar wrote on April 07, 2009 08:29 PM: The Council for NLV should look into their own Pet Projects, that they approve, that costs the city Millions and Millions of dollars, so they, The Council Members can hire more Contractors. That's where these politicians get their Big Kickbacks. They don't spend a hundred thousand bucks to run for office, to hold a position that pays 60-70k a year. They are in the position for the contractor kickbacks, and THAT means more and more costly pet projects. So they put on the baloney act, that they must cut City Employee salaries, and negotiated raises. They also want to get their dirty hands on the City Employee's Pension Fund. They see that money, and desperately want to spend it on more Pet Projects, to get more kickbacks. That's just what politicians do. Look at all the ones that got caught taking kickbacks all across the U.S. Governors, Senators, Mayors, Council-people, and commissioners, Appointed Judges. All corrupt, all associated to one another. America's politicians are NO different than, any other country. The power of the positions, enable corrupt and noncorrupt Politicians and Judges alike, to try to get rich quick. Before their office is up.

The secret is finally out and it’s at least nice to know who is working for whom and who is serving whom.

You really ought to think things over before you let you alligator mouth over run your humming bird arse.Taking a pay cut is better than losing your job.Nearly everyone working in the private sector has been hit with less hours and money.Your not talking to your wife or kids now,we know how hard most of you city, county, and state workers slave.LOL
    dao,
Mostly only government employees get a cola.Ditto to you what was posted to bill.NV Energy is a private sector employer controled by a state entity (PUC).Lots of difference, thank goodness. If you want to get cranked up about something, cry to the government to do business within their means. The way things are going,Southern Nevada could well be full of ghost towns if the government doesn't start working smarter than they have.To them more taxes means more spending.ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.Anyone ever hear about the Boston Tea Party?
