Motorcyclist killed in crash on Blue Diamond

A 47-year-old motorcyclist from Pahrump died early Monday after being struck by a woman who might have been driving under the influence on State Route 160, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Trooper Kevin Honea identified the deceased man as Randy Harris. He said the collision occurred about 4:30 a.m. on Blue Diamond Road near El Capitan Way.

How many people do you know that are taking "pain medicine"? It's running rampat through the communitities. Whatever she was on she has ruined so many lives, Mr. Harris' family and her family. I do hope she sits in jail and really understands what her actions did, her poor judgement killed a man. I don't drink so that if my husband does I drive. Accidents can happen anytime but this is so unnescessary.

There are plenty of each on the road to cause concern. Drivers on cell phones are easily distracted, and 2 out of 10 drivers are chatting or texting while driving. We all see them, yapping away, oblivious to changing conditions in traffic. And bad drivers in general, do not see motorcycles. Their brains are conditioned to automatically notice cars and larger vehicles, not bikes and motorcycles. Then there are drivers who run red lights, or run left turns, when they do not have the right of way. You see one of these fools at every intersection. The majority of Motorcycle accidents used to be from car drivers making a left turn in front of you. Red light runners are also a major cause, and DUI head on drivers crossing lanes into an oncoming motorcycle is becoming more prevalent. Then there are people who should not be behind a wheel. Illegals driving the "Group Car", or people with extremely poor judgment, who never use turn signals to indicate "last minute" lane changes. Or Drunk or Impaired drivers......But then there are the bad motorcycle drivers. The immature jerks, who bought a fast bike, can't get the dream girl they hoped to ride on the back, so they speed all around town, cutting off drivers to impress them. Imagine that, trying to impress total strangers, like they are going to say "Wow, he's cool". The bike didn't get him the babes the salesman promised him it would, so, now he's reckless. Then there is the NEW Harley moron, who buys a bike for the same reason, but never learned to ride. The Dangers are there every day. Stay Alert. Ride Safe.

He was on his way to work in Vegas Monday morning when he was killed. He was a pillar of the church he attended with his family in Pahrump. Randy was a great person inside and out and a wonderful Christian man. He will be truly missed but he is with his Lord in heaven. That is the only consolation in this situation. If you pray, keep his family in your prayers.

Sahara last year that further confirmed my conviction. A car going west on sahara pulled in front of a bike heading East bound. There were several people trying to put the man on fire in the middle of the street out, while I tried to rescue the person in the car that was also on fire. Everyone passed away and it was tragic. To those that ride, I understand why, but it is not if you go down, it is when. Hope your family members are ready for it.

There needs to be traffic signals, better lighting, and medians at the busy intersections of Blue Diamond.

I remember when the intersection of Durango and Blue Diamond was the deadliest in Las Vegas until a traffic signal and street lights were put into place.

I'm a relatively new motorcyclist and something equally appalling is how so few riders wear appropriate safety gear. That is to say, full or 3/4 face helmets, pants, jackets, shoes and gloves with elbow, knee, hip, shoulder and spine padding.

I'm not saying or implying that this poor soul was not wearing proper gear but if you have motorcycle endorsement on your license, you know what ATGATT means; All The Gear, All The Time.

So many riders take off in a half head helmet, t-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. Even if you simply slide down in some gravel on a turn it's like jumping out of your car going 35 mph and skidding on the pavement... not too pretty. Add the impact of a car and it's hard to come out a winner; at least good safety gear gives you a chance and some protection of vital parts.

Again, I'm not implying the deceased ride was not wearing ATGATT but if you ride or know someone who rides, do what you can to protect yourself.

By the same token and this may sound contradictory, I don't think it's the government's place to dictate helmets, gear or common sense; if you want to ride without protection... good luck and god bless!
