Obama nominates Bogden for Nevada U.S. Attorney

President Barack Obama has nominated former Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden, who was ousted in a controversial move during the Bush administration, to retain his old post.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had recommended to the White House that Bogden get his old job back.

  • Reid said earlier this year that Greg Brower, who currently holds the post, has done a fine job. But Reid said Bogden deserves to be reappointed to the post, which was taken from him more than two years ago in a firing that was never fully explained.

Bogden was one of four nominees named today by Obama.

“These fine men and women have demonstrated the extensive knowledge of the law and deep commitment to public service Americans deserve from their United States Attorneys,” Obama said.

Were you paying attention this week when he said that no health care bill would pass out of the Senate if it had a "public option in it".

And this jerk Max Baucus, Democrat Senate Finance Committee Chairman totally bought and paid for by the insurance industry, would not be in the position to block health care reform if Harry the DINO chose to take Baucus' chairmanship away.

Fair and Balanced Fred wrote on July 31, 2009 06:25 PM: The cons can't lead, so they consistently mislead. If you see a post under my handle that appears particularly inarticulate, with horrible syntax, while inventing new rules for written English, you know it's just another misleading con posting under my handle again as we see below.

Some neo-cons, Republicons or other breed of con find me sufficiently threatening to impersonate me:

Anyway, Karl Rove somehow ended up in the (what should I call them?) "statements" below posted under my handle.

Here's what Rove's been up to lately: "E-mails and new interviews with key participants reflect contacts among Rove, aides in the Bush political affairs office and White House lawyers about the dismissal of three of the nine U.S. attorneys fired in 2006: New Mexico's David C. Iglesias, the focus of ire from GOP lawmakers; Missouri's Todd Graves, who had clashed with one of Rove's former clients; and Arkansas's Bud Cummins, who was pushed out to make way for a Rove protégé."

"The e-mails emerged as Rove finished his second day of closed-door-testimony Thursday about the firings to the House Judiciary Committee. For years, Rove and former White House counsel Harriet E. Miers had rejected efforts by lawmakers to obtain their testimony and their correspondence about the issue, citing executive privilege. The House sued, igniting a court fight that was resolved this year."

"Rove and Miers, as well as other Bush administration figures, still could be called to testify at a public hearing on Capitol Hill. Transcripts of their behind-closed-doors accounts could be released by the House Judiciary panel as early as August under the terms of the court settlement."

"At the same time, Assistant U.S. Attorney Nora R. Dannehy continues to investigate whether the firings of the prosecutors and the political firestorm that followed could form the basis of possible criminal charges."

SpeakTruthtoPower wrote on July 31, 2009 03:47 PM: Investigative news reports about Bush Justice Department's firing of Dan Bogden have shown that the reason was petty, not political.

There was a Utah lawyer higher up the food chain at Justice whose "pet peeve" was obscenity cases. Captain Utah told Bogden to prosecute some particular cases that Captain Utah was obsessing about. Bogden told him "No", that Bogden's office had more important hardcore criminal cases to pursue.

Miffed at Bogden's insolence, Captain Utah went higher up the Justice food chain, whining that Bogden was insubordinate.

Despite his very convincing "playing dumb" Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez and some of his hideously unqualified deputies had a "political list" of U.S. Attorneys to fire, but they wanted the reasons for those firings to be less transparent. Thus, they stuck Bodgen on the firing list as camouflage for the political firings.

As a matter of fairness, it is good that Bogden will get his old job back.

There have been loud rumblings from his former staff, that they didn't like his leadership style, and didn't want him back. Those rumblings are simply hard to judge. Were they stirred up by Bogden's successor, in an attempt to retain his ill gotten job? We'll never know.

My own belief is that through this painful experience Dan Bogden will have learned a lot about injustice, and that the new perspective will make him a more thoughtful and just prosecutor.

Will unhappy local U.S. Attorney staffers try to sabotage Bogden, to get him to quit after a few months in the job? Hard to tell at this point.

At the national level, Justice's biggest problem is that it's larded with Bush/Gonzalez appointees who are grossly stupid/unqualified but who have civil service status and can't be fired or transferred.

Allen wrote on July 31, 2009 03:03 PM: @Hey Allen,

Apparently, you missed the point of my post.

I'm well aware that Bogden was both nominated and later fired by Pres. Bush 43. The flap over his firing could equally apply to Brower's firing (the topic of the article): both did a fine job; both were fired for purely political reasons. Thus, for consistency, there should be a media flap over Brower's replacement, hearings should be threatened, political supporters should pout, administration officials should be forced to resign, etc.

Except that neither firing deserves the attention that Bogden's sacking got, because (as I said initially) US Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President.

Bogden got hired by President Bush. Then he got fired and Pres. Bush hired Brower. Then Pres. Obama fires Brower and re-hired Bogden. Pure politics, and not worthy of anything by the barest of media attention.

Bush Lied and U.S. attorneys were FIED, meaning FIRED, but it did not rime. So, that settles it.

heckle jeckle wrote on July 31, 2009 02:49 PM: Allen, Bogden got fired two years ago and Obama has been president since January. Think about that for a second. Personally, I don't think Bush had much to do with it. I think the country was being run by Darth Vadar.
