Boy in critical condition after crash; woman arrested on DUI charges

A 10-month-old boy was critically injured and a 41-year-old Las Vegas woman was arrested on drunken driving charges after a collision shortly after midnight on Nellis Boulevard near Sahara Avenue.

Claudia Zepeda, 38, of Las Vegas, was driving a 1999 Honda Accord south on Nellis when she was rear-ended by a 2003 Toyota Sequoia, police said.

  • Police said Vickie Duran, 41, was driving the Sequoia. After the Accord was rear-ended, it was sent in a southeast direction across the northbound lanes, police said.

Duran fled the scene but was detained by a witness, police said. She was arrested on felony DUI and hit and run charges.

The boy was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. His identity was not released and his condition was unknown tonight.

The woman of the accord is my friend and I know she was working so to everyone who said that she shouldn't have had the baby out you must have alot of money. For a single mom who works nights it's hard to get daycare. All I can do now is pray for my friend and her family. This little precious baby is gone and there is nothing anyone can do or say to make it ok.I don't understand how people do this even if they've done it a 100 times before and nothing has happened all it takes is one time.My poor friend now has to deal with the loss of her child and this lady is going to get to walk around and be happy with hers. I hope she gets the strongest punishment ever. Please pray for my friend and her family.

Her son kept telling his mom they could not leave, she insisted they had not even been involved in an accident although her green suv had the front end compltetly smashed in, all she was worried about was leaving to use a pay phone to call AAA for a tow even though she just got off her cell phone with her ex. Awesome job done by FD who after checking the boys neck, took him to their fire engine and allowed him inside for a tour while his mother was being dealt with. The injured child and his family along with the drunk woman's son will deal with this for the rest of their lives, she showed no remorse.

Everyone should be/feel responsible (maybe not legally responsible...) for keeping a clearly dangerous woman from hurting other people. If you and others that were aware of her actions did, thank you for trying. If not, then please consider that maybe, just maybe, this wouldn't have happened had the drunk driver been dealt with enough times by the police and courts before tragedy struck. I get it that sometimes it's easier to not get involved, but is it easy to live with the consequences if you don't? Reckless behaviour can have devastating consequences and is at least partially the fault of everyone who knew about it and didn't do as much as possible (even if it's not pleasant and takes time and effort) to stop it.

SISTER wrote on October 19, 2009 05:50 PM: You really do not know her so do not judge and jury with useless words. She has a drinking problem that is evident. What leads up to drinking you will never know unless you walk in that persons shoes. Some of you are really morbid and pathetic and really know nothing about VEGAS at all. I hope the little baby boy makes it for his mothers love and other mothers out there that really understand.

joe wrote on October 17, 2009 11:33 PM: Laura, when people don't want to take responsibility for doing drugs, or overeating, or drinking, they call it a 'disease'. This way it somehow absolves them of guilt because I guess it's supposed to be out of their control. As you can guess I consider that a bunch of bull. If this lady was indeed driving under the influence then I agree with Vegasatty, throw the reckless, selfish, pathetic sob to prison to do some serious time. No weaseling out on probation or community service.

The cops slapped her with DUI charges for a reason. She also ran after the accident. I feel perfectly fine judging this inconsiderate loser with the information given.
