Death row inmate hangs himself in Ely prison

CARSON CITY — White Pine county authorities say an inmate on death row for a Las Vegas murder has hanged himself in his Ely prison cell.

The sheriff's office says Timothy L. Redmen was found dead from an apparent suicide on Nov. 18. They say the cell door was wedged shut and had to be removed so prison officials could gain entry.

Redmen had been on death row since Nov. 1990 after being convicted of fatally shooting Max Biederman. Biederman's face was mutilated with an iron railing, his hands cut off and his body left in a trash bin. Biederman's hands were found in a bag in the desert.

In July, the Nevada Supreme Court rejected an appeal of Redman's conviction.

So, if we wish the death row prisoners would follow "Tim's lead," then we might as well hand over noose's to all of our institutionalized mentally ill. But first, remember, we have to spray them like bugs in tiny, enclosed rooms until they can't stand it anymore.

If it's true, what a mess!

    Does anybody know more?

Excellent description of what is happening.
Do you think that the gassing of prisoner Redman was intentional as revenge, or ignorance about the lethal effects that gas can have for those trapped in small spaces?

Comments that suggest a "rush to judgement" speak only of cost effectiveness and revenge. Let's think about the innocent people that have been put to death. This is one of the most compelling reasons for abolishing the death penalty...There is no recourse if the execution was in error.

About using cs gas inside cells...

Although described as a non-lethal weapon for crowd control, many studies have raised doubts about this classification. As well as creating severe pulmonary damage, CS can also significantly damage the heart and liver.[

On September 28, 2000, Prof. Dr. Uwe Heinrich released a study commissioned by John C. Danforth, of the United States Office of Special Counsel, to investigate the use of CS by the FBI at the Branch Davidians' Mount Carmel compound.

He concluded that the lethality of CS used would have been determined mainly by two factors: whether gas masks were used and whether the occupants were trapped in a room.

He suggests that if no gas masks were used and the occupants were trapped, then, "...there is a distinct possibility that this kind of CS exposure can significantly contribute to or even cause lethal effects."[

Maybe Mr. Redman’s family ought to get this professor to testify in a use of excessive force case against Ely guards and prison administrators?

Why would Nevada prison administrators allow this gas to be used inside prison cells?

Violence against prisoners, especially mentally ill prisoners, is barbaric.

Before I moved here, I was warned that there is much ignorance here. I certainly see signs of that everyday in the stupid, mean comments lodged here daily. Thanks for speaking up!

Did the gas pepper fumes produce adrenaline... produce cortisol (a potent stress hormone)... produce oxygen deprivation, produce cognitive confusion, dysfunction... that led to Mr. Redman's ultimate escape attempt from unconstitutional Nevada prison conditions... suicide (asphyxia due to hanging)?

Hmmm wrote on November 26, 2009 05:18 PM: Why do we convict these guys to death and then let them hang out (no pun itended) for 20 years on the taxpayer's teet? Our death penalty system needs a swift upgrade. The deterent to not kill has been greatly diminished by the fact that we don't actually impose the death penalty. Hundreds or even thousands in this country on "deaht row" yet we get one or two executions a year? Time to jump-start this process. The next governor should promise to begin executing death row inmates twice monthly until further notice. In 12 months time, the word will have spread FAR and wide that Nevada WILL impose its stiffest penalty, and with 24 down in a single calendar year, your time WILL come up sooner than anywhere else on the planet. Further, with states releasing tons of lower-level criminals early due to "budget cuts" I'd propose we flip that, start executing the real thugs at the TOP of the criminal chain, thus making room for more of the lower-level idiots we'd have otherwise released, and setting free only the tax evaders or traffic ticket guys. Lets do something for ourselves, for a change, and make some adjustments.
