Midler to conclude her run at Caesars Palace on Jan. 31

Bette Midler will wrap her Las Vegas showcase “The Showgirl Must Go On” on Jan. 31, fulfilling a two-year contract.

“These legs have had such a great run in the desert — it may be time to haul them to places with more humidity and fewer slot machines,” Midler said in a statement released today.

  • The entertainer returns to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace Saturday through Nov. 15, then for a final batch of shows Dec. 30 to Jan. 31.

No decisions have been made for a replacement, says Kris Lingle, spokeswoman for AEG Live, which operates the Colosseum. Cher will continue as the anchor act for the 4,200-seat venue, with dates throughout 2010. Comic ventriloquist Jeff Dunham also will have recurring engagements.

As for speculation that Celine Dion might be ready to reclaim the stage next year, Lingle cites AEG Live president John Meglen’s past statement that “the door is always open when she’s ready,” but there is nothing to announce.

Midler opened Feb. 20, 2008, with top ticket prices at $250 in keeping with Dion’s “A New Day.” In early shows, Midler joked about the growing financial crisis, saying she got the Colosseum “for an adjustable rate mortgage with no money down.”

She posted strong numbers in early shows, with trade publication Pollstar reporting a $3.1 million gross for a March 2008 run of five shows with four sellouts.

But as the economy continued to erode, producer AEG Live began to offer various promotions and seating upgrades while attempting to preserve the face-value ticket prices. Most of Midler’s dates this year have been discounted in some fashion.

Midler celebrated 100 shows in June and will be closer to the 180 mark by the time she wraps her engagement, Lingle said.

    You actually said:
I paid $276 for my ticket, but at the end, Bette came down and sat on the steps and played the Ukulele in front of me, just steps away, I could have touched her! You can't put a price on that ticket

OH MY!!!!! You paid $275 and had a 60 year old woman sit on your lap and play a ukelele!?!?!? Wow!!

I know other places in town where for $40 you can get someone a bit younger to sit on your lap and play with a different kind of ukelele....if you catch my drift! wink wink

    Liza, where are you?

Bette had been a major draw to this city - several conventions have come to Vegas and made seeing her show a main event in their program. She is, like her or not, a talented woman who puts on one heck of a show.

And as someone who saw her because visiting family really wanted to - while I really had no interest - I can say I am thrilled to have seen her show, and now, consider myself a fan.

You only have until the end of January! Go see her!

For a week LAT headlined the Kardasian chick and her soon-to-be "husband" house-shopping; yesterday they headline Reggie and Kim house-selling/hunting.

When Matthew Broderick left "The Producers", and when Nathan Lane left the same show, front page coverage appeared on nytimes.com.

Maybe you just wanna move onto some other site that might appreciate your lack of knowledge before commenting?

Try to go see her if you can, anywhere in the front orchestra would be a good seat. I paid $276 for my ticket, but at the end, Bette came down and sat on the steps and played the Ukulele in front of me, just steps away, I could have touched her! You can't put a price on that ticket!
She is 60 something, looks 40, runs around that stage like she's 20!
A show not to be missed!

Enjoy the show but is something like this really 'newsworthy'?

Do you think the LA Times devotes space to which celebrity brought a home? Or the NY Times to what actor is on B'way?
