New UNLV football coach agrees to three-year contract

Bobby Hauck, who went a remarkable 80-17 in seven seasons at Montana and led the Grizzles to three Football Championship Subdivision national title appearances, was hired Tuesday to be UNLV’s next coach.

Hauck, 45, will be introduced at a news conference at noon today at the Thomas & Mack Center’s Board Room.

  • He agreed to a three-year, $350,000 salary -- plus an annual $150,000 completion bonus Ñ heavy on incentives. The Board of Regents has called a special meeting to approve the contracts for Hauck and Jim Livengood, who last week was hired at athletic director.

“I’m all for it,” regent Mark Alden said. “I think (Hauck’s) the right hire. We really got lucky. A great, great hire.”

Hauck was chosen over former longtime coach Dennis Franchione, who now works for ESPN Radio. One source close to the hiring process said Hauck won the job because of his “energy” and that he was seen as “a masterful recruiter.”

“He had to work hard to recruit to Montana, where Dennis recruited at Alabama and (Texas) A&M,” the source said, referring to football hotbeds that draw natural recruiting interest.

An attempt to reach Hauck was unsuccessful. Franchione declined comment.

Hauck replaces Mike Sanford, who was fired last month and on Tuesday was named Louisville’s offensive coordinator. He will try to resurrect a program that hasn’t had a winning season or appeared in a bowl since 2000.

Of Hauck’s $350,000 salary, $150,000 will be in base pay, $150,000 for media obligations and $50,000 for public appearances. That is less than the $425,000 Sanford earned, but Livengood said, “There will be another piece to it. That’s all I can say about it right now.”

A source with knowledge of the deal said the other piece is a $150,000 completion bonus for each season Hauck finishes. So his salary, in reality, is $500,000, plus what can be earned in incentives.

Hauck can make between $10,000 to $100,000 for a bowl appearance and between $5,000 to $15,000 for a winning season, depending on the number of victories. He also can make $10,000 for finishing in the Top 25 of the coaches’ poll, $10,000 for being named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, and $5,000 for an Academic Progress Report score greater than 925.

If Hauck gets anywhere close to the same results he achieved at Montana, he should earn plenty in incentives.

“He’ll make believers out of the kids (at UNLV), or they’ll go somewhere else,” said Montana donor Walt Brett, who played for the Grizzlies and in the NFL. “He tells it the way it is. He has high expectations for himself, his staff and his players. What he has produced on the field is substantial.”

The Grizzlies won the Big Sky Conference championship in all seven seasons under Hauck. They also made three FCS title games, most recently Friday, a 23-21 loss to Villanova.

Montana went 0-3 in the national title game under Hauck, but UNLV fans no doubt will overlook that one blemish should he win in Las Vegas.

“I’m real excited to have Bobby Hauck and carry on the tradition at UNLV he had at Montana,” said UNLV donor Rich Abajian, general manager/co-owner at Findlay Toyota and a member of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame. “We will give him all our support to make the Rebels a winner.”

Brigham Young coach Bronco Mendenhall, in town for Tuesday night’s MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, said he and Hauck are longtime friends.

“He’s done an excellent job at Montana,” Mendenhall said Monday.

This Kid was ranked 4th in the state and missed most of his senior year in High School. This kid could have started at UNLV be opted for San Diego St., Colorado and ended up at UNR. Tells us that Bobby Hauck will have his work cut out for him recruiting the best LV High School players.

Your stupid. You can't let all of the players just decide what they want to do! Haha yeah, lets let 22 different people with different ideas and personalities call all of the shots haha Thats why there coaches in the first place. And managers, and supervisors, etc. That is one of the dumbest things I've heard in a long time. Everybody thinks they know best-thats why you hire ONE person to make those decisions.

Do any of you rocket scientists know where Jim Tressel came from? How about Brian Kelly? How about Jim Harbaugh?
Guess what guys its a pretty common thing.
Besides what did you expect? Should they have gone after Pete Carrol or Urban Meyer? Oh yeah I'll bet you Mack Brown would leave UT for UNLV that realistic. This is a FANTASTIC hire.

If you want to complain about something that is truly holding this program back you should start with the facilities. This University has the WORST football facilities in major college football and THAT my friends, NOT the coaches, is what hold this program back.

We now face another 4 or 5 years of a nearly empty stadium and a door-mat football team that is the joke of the NCAA. In 2013 they may have to resort to hiring a high school P.E. Teacher to coach the Stumbling Rebels!

They are the ones who are focusing on the herd of the guys rushing at them. They learn really quick who are the players on the other side of that line who are dangerous and what they can do to avoid the fatal confrontation. They, as a team know! They don't need some overpaid idiot on the sidelines telling them what play is next!I would like to see one game with NO COACHES AT ALL ! Let the TEAM OF PLAYERS DECIDE WHAT TO DO !I would think they would do a wonderful job jusat playing the GAME ,and I know their ultimate goal is to win the GAME !If you guys who are couch quarterbacks ever played the game ? You would understand !

You don't know me !I played football in high school and college. Most of our off the field conversations focused on how the coaches had their heads up the area of where this posting will not allow me to say!The players just want to play the GAME ! Remember ? This Is A GAME! The Players want to have fun and win the GAME !They have no interest in trying to supply cash to the school or anyone else.Did you forget how it was to be, JUST A KID? Their satisfaction is making it to the goal post and hearing the crowds yell and chear!

Be Real wrote on December 22, 2009 11:15 PM: When UNLV was king of College Hoops look at how much money it brought to the school? Sorry, but the Science department does not bring in the money or convince students to register at UNLV as did the Rebel Basketball team did. Football should be a revenue producing sport which helps pay for other sports programs and brings revenue to the school.

Hauck better be ready to convince people that UNLV football will be worth caring about. Money and support is waiting for a Coach who can engage the community and provide results. We can only hope that he is given the budget to hire top flight assistant coaches instead of the joke of a staff that Sanford put together.

If Findlay Toyota is excited about him, maybe they can finance the remodel of the locker rooms at Sam Boyd so we do not have to hear this excuse anymore.

Good luck to Coach Hauck. Please recruit Nevada kids like your life depended on it and you will find there is talent that will stay home. Beat Reno once and for all without the smack talk of the past regime. I am just wondering who is actually paying money to hear a UNLV Football Coach speak? He better be begging to speak at any community event whether he gets paid for it or not!
