Las Vegas police arrested longtime Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith Saturday night on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Sgt. John Sheahan said Smith's car was observed swerving in the area of U.S. Highway 95 and Ann Road at 11:26 p.m. Smith said he was on northbound U.S. 95 when he was stopped by a motorcycle officer. The officer also reported seeing Smith texting while driving.

The officer who stopped Smith suspected that he had been drinking, Sheahan said. The result of Smith's blood alcohol test was not available. The legal limit is 0.08.

"I got stopped," Smith said Sunday. "I fully cooperated. I'm very embarrassed by this."

Smith, who reported the arrest to Review-Journal management, has worked at the newspaper since 1985. He said he was driving home after attending the Nevada Press Association awards banquet in Pahrump.

Why would John bury the following link?:

Does he not invite open discussion?

Why is this story being buried? Cover up?

I don't know where you idiots get your info, But I looked it up and this is his FIRST SUSPICION OF DUI< not the 2nd. What is your probem Barket & So? I would be willing to bet he has exposed you both for the scum you are..Can one of us honestly say we have never had a drink at an awards dinner or office function like the anual Holiday party? Let he who is without sin cast the 1st stone. By the way he was stopped at 95/Ann Rd. NOT Pahrump you morons, read the story. Sure, he could have called at least 20 judges or Metro Mgt. and gotten out of it, but chose to man up and call his bosses and take his licks. I'm sure he feels he has let down his handicapped daughter more than anyone and you jerks continue to kick him when he is down. Yes he has made a mistake and we are all human, so et's give him a break

Has there been a follow-up to this stating if in fact Mr. Smith was DUI? I just find it biased where if this was police officer, firefighter, or school teacher the stories would be relentless. Is it because it was "one of their own" that the story has died? Just curious.

John L Smith, I disagree with you often. I do not wish you ill. This is tough but you'll get through it. I respect anyone trying to do their job. Be well.

Although John's job has been to report other peoples mishaps, he's often reported them in favor of the underdog. Unfortunately, this time it's his mishap and he is far from the underdog. Family, coworkers and anyone who pulled him over prior to this have done nothing but enable him and put the community at risk. Just like a drink driver, they don't have that right!!

Okay John, time to step up, suck it up, get some help and get off the road. Time to lead by example and be part of the problem or part of the solution. We have enough psycho rude drivers on the road without yet another drunk adding to the mix. After 26 years here, I for one have had enough of both.

... I did not anticipate all the venom loosed on this man. The issue is not his writing/opinions ... the issue is that he has a known problem. And since I am one who has lost a family member to DUI on Mt. Charleston _ it is simply due time that he and his problem were arrested _ before another life is lost on that road ... or enroute to the same.

@GaryStagliano- you hit the nail on the head. John has always reported anyone elses "mishaps" with glee...as if he was a saint pointing fingers at the sinners. I really hope he enjoys his trip through "the system" because he's always been a big supporter of higher taxes and government programs... HEY JOHN--did you know the government has a program for problem drinkers? Well, you are about to find out all about it..and you are also about to find out how the system chews people up and spits them out... Enjoy the ride John.
