Clark County prosecutors will seek the death penalty against Javier Righetti in the slaying and rape of 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba over the Labor Day weekend.

The district attorney's death penalty committee decided to seek capital punishment for Righetti after convening Thursday.

Righetti, 19, was indicted by a grand jury last week on murder charges in connection with Otremba's death and the March kidnapping and sexual assault of another 15-year-old girl, who survived being strangled in the attack.

Righetti confessed to Las Vegas police that he tortured Otremba while stabbing her in the face and other parts of her body with a knife more than 80 times, authorities say. He carved the initials "LV" on the Arbor View High School freshman's body, authorities say.

The committee, which meets privately, looks at three factors when considering capital punishment: whether there are aggravating factors in the case; whether a jury would impose the death penalty as punishment; and whether a conviction would stand up under appeal.

District Attorney David Roger said there were at least five aggravating circumstances in the case, including rape, kidnapping, robbery, torture and mutilation.

Otremba's burned body was discovered Sept. 3 in a vacant lot along the route she took between home and school in the northwest valley.

The sexual assault of the other teenager occurred on March 8 in tunnels that run under U.S. Highway 95 in the same area of town, authorities said.

Righetti was charged with a total of 10 felony counts in the two attacks, including murder, sexual assault, kidnapping and armed robbery.

His arraignment is set for Oct. 20 before District Judge Michelle Leavitt.

Righetti was arrested at his home on the 7900 block of Willow Pines Drive, minutes from Alyssa's home and less than a mile from the vacant lot where her body was found.

Police tracked down Righetti through his friend Daniel Ortiz.

Ortiz told detectives Righetti called him about 12:30 a.m. Sept. 3 and said he had killed a girl during a robbery.

Yo Jerry, of course we wont think of our time here....we wont think of anything....we will be DEAD! Not in heaven, not in hell. These are ficticious places as is your "god". We wont think of this place because we will be in the process of returning back to where we came from, the EARTH.

And BTW I am perfect, just ask me!

J.Lee... Wow, and you are such a model of perfection aren't you. I find it amazing that you feel your belief system is correct to the point of having to ridicule anothers. If you are as confident in your belief as you appear why the bother to ridicule a person of faith? I think maybe you are the sheep, sucker.
Believe what you want, that is your perogitive. I will believe what I know to be the truth. I can assure you when we are all gone from this place we will think not of our time here.

I have a better idea. Lets carry out the sentence post haste. The man himself freely admoitted to the killing. Freely admitted the torturous details to Detectives. He doesn't deserve an instant appeal, He doesn't deserve a free and speedy trial. He deserves a free and speedy projectile. Travels about 3000feet per second and hits with approx 2,700 foot pounds of energy. Not as horrendous a death as he perpetrated, but it will do.

    To my fellow bloggers;
If and when they find this POS guilty, I sure hope somebody somewhere in the court system remembers to order the preservation of all of the evidence and not let some pencil neck geek that is trying to save the county a buck, dispose of the evidence because the storage fees, costs, and available space is limited. I figure about 10 years worth of appeals before this guy is burned, that is of course if he is found guilty. Be looking for possibly the insanity plea and a big sloppy wet kiss and off to lakes crossing with him. Just an old cop reflecting,

God does not exist, you have been suckered, and have been turned into a human sheep. You spend your life devoted to a man made diety, man made to control you. Its working well.

This debate will never end. Let's be real here. This guy will be tried, convicted, and sentanced to death. He will be then sent to Ely State Prison to serve out his sentence. He will probably out live most of us. No we can't take him out and shoot him, nor can we turn him over to his victims family. Even if he gets life without, he will be placed in protective custody for as long as he lives. These aren't hateful anti Christian comments either.the truth is, death or life without, this guy will live a long life behind bars. But, if one believes in Karma, or in God, he will pay in the long run. I don't know about you, but I fear that more than any earthly penalty. So,Javier Righetti, you will pay. Burn baby, burn.

bghs1986 Also, who says it's a vengance system? This MURDERER raped, beat, killed and burned an innocent young teenager and he deserves to die. Would you like it if someone murdered YOUR family member, would you like that? Would you let him get away with that? NO!!!!!! You would let the police find him, arrest him, charge him, put him on trial, convict him, and put him to death. This MURDERER should have acid poured on him, and have a firing squad put him to death. Do you get it now? When you said that wasn't justice, you sounded like you worked for Harrito Reid. Now I'm done. Now hush, the adults are talking.
