CARSON CITY -- Leaders of Gov. Jim Gibbons' Education Reform Blue Ribbon Task Force decided Thursday to hold all of their meetings in public.
Task force co-chair Dan Klaich said he and co-chair Elaine Wynn decided all meetings will be in public and conducted in places where the media and citizens can easily attend.
Their decision comes after a furor occurred when the task force held a private meeting March 19 at Wynn Las Vegas.
The American Civil Liberties Union quickly requested that Gibbons require the task force to meet in public and cited state laws that seemed to indicate the task force was a public body that must conduct meetings in public.
However, Deputy Attorney General George Taylor said his research showed the task force was not a public body and therefore exempt from open-meeting law requirements.
"It is unfortunate that this became the focus of the stories," said Klaich, chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education. "This task force has the opportunity to do a lot of good. Mrs. Wynn and I agree it should be a public process."
Maggie McLetchie, an ACLU lawyer and interim director in Southern Nevada, hailed the decision by Klaich and Wynn.
"The task force did the right thing," she said. "It is important that the meetings be open to the public. Now we don't have to decide whether to file a lawsuit."
Klaich said the panel's next meeting will be April 9 in Northern Nevada, followed by an April 23 meeting in Las Vegas.

Well IS it a public body or a private party? Why is the education system of the state handed over to a lunch club? Why aren't Gibbons and other paid state employees working to improve education in Nevada? Why does Elaine Wynn have to do their jobs? Is the lady an education specialist? How silly. I suppose Gibbons has the excuse that he's busy trying to make sure that Obama's health care plan doesn't help keep a single god-abandoned soul in this state alive one minute more than necessary.
You missed the point of telling them to start teaching real and accurate history.
By the way, the only presidencies that should probably be taught are about the first five. They got it since they still had an idea of why and how America was founded. It's been downhill every since.
Partly why America is on path to oblivion is because of teachers, and I know this isn't all of you, but you preach a broken union mentality whether explicitly or implicitly. This is half the reason why we are watching America sink.
By the way, why can't you stand on your own teachers? Why do you join together to extort from some of us who work hard and have prepared ourselves?
I know thousand of people and I do not know of one that has tried hard and prepared themselves and who is being abused by the "man" or big bad evil businesses. Not one. They sell you a lie in the union ranks.
That whole entitlement and, we gotta stick together because we'll get scrwd otherwise, is ridiculous. Your union leaders easily sell you like politicians sell the naive on a daily basis.
By the way, I blame bad parenting for most of the problems in schools.
Teachers! Teach children history. Teach them about American history. Teach them how our system has lead to more prosperity and good for people more than all other systems on earth combined. Teach them about limited government. Teach them about our constitution. Teach them about the abuse of governments in history. Teach them about the evils and misery socialism has brought. Teach them about what incentive does for a nation.
If not, then you need to teach and prepare them for what it will be like to work six months per year, or 9:00 to noon each day, to pay taxes to people who are irresponsible and don't make a real effort in life.
Teach them how we have unraveled the greatest gift every given to man.

Prepare students to be IRS agents. There will be many jobs in that agency under Obamacare.
